The reason that console ports of arcade fighters have 3x or 2x buttons set to one button is because the casual consumer. They pick up the game off the shelf because it says “Street Fighter” on the cover. They only have a standard issue pad at home, and the developer wants to make it as easy as possible for them to get into the game. Because if this casual gamer is frustrated that they cannot do a lot of the moves in said game, they won’t tell their friends to also pick up the game, or worse yet, to avoid said game because it’s to difficult to control. So since the advent of the 8-button control pad (e.g. SAT/PSX pad), developers have made it easier on pad players.

But you also should keep in mind that these games are developed in japan. (Midway not withstanding.) Where console fighters are more of an afterthought in a competitive sense. They throw in all the bonuses so it will sell, because without them people wouldn’t buy them. If you want to compete and improve your game you play at the arcade, where the controls are mostly standardized.

So back to why macros are a bad thing. You have to make a competition as fair as possible. So like in a game of basketball, you can choose what ever shoe that fits you best (i.e. your controller of choice). But you can’t put springs in them (i.e. Macros/Turbo).

This post is why we’re not allowing any kind of macro.
