Namco's "ball" joystick

I just thought about that after posting, but I figured there wasn’t an easy way to keep the shaft from rotating, so I gave up.

Come on people. I don’t know what “loctite” or “torque” are. This is the most basic. thing. ever. I want to stop the HEAD of the joystick(yellow ball, which you hold) from moving at all.

So far, I’ve unscrewed the back of the entire thing, tried to turn the flathead screw, but it doesn’t move whatsoever even if I stop the stick from rotating. I don’t see how this is going to prevent the yellow ball head from rotating.

Since I can’t seem to find a solution, I was thinking of buying this instead. It doesn’t appear as if it’s head rotates, and it looks pretty solid. What do you think?

Alas, I’m out of ideas. All I know is that it’s incredibly annoying while holding up, since it moves slightly and is really annoying.

Seriously, all this time you’ve been talking about how you want the balltop to stay in place. This leads people to believe the balltop has gotten loose, hence suggesting that you tighten and permanently lock it down with glue.

It always seemed to me you wanted to hinder rotational movement of the shaft, but when I asked whether such was the case you just kept blabbering on about the balltop. If indeed the real issue lies with the shaft then I’d say your wish is impossible. Considering most Japanese-style sticks use a cylindrical shaft and actuator, it’d be pretty darn hard to stop it from being rotatable and still keep all functionality intact.

AFAIK it’s not possible to stop the “ball” from spinning without ALOT of work, because its turning with the shaft when tightened properly.

Never used a Happ styled stick, so I don’t have a clue about comparasions with the SFAC. As for comparing it with the sticks in NZ, I don’t quite remember the name of the sticks that CoinCascade supplies the arcades here, but they’re european(?) styled. Longish shaft with a very small balltop. The exposed base of the stick (the base you see from the outside of the cab) is dome shaped. Maybe someone with more experience could point you in the right direction. Oh, and if anyone could name the stick with the description given, I’d appreciate it :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually, the head on that one rotates too just like a happ, but it isn’t loose or free spinning.

Wow. You’re dumber than I thought. Disassemble the joystick again. You’ll notice that the shaft has a circular actuator at the bottom. Rotations stop when you hit an edge. Circles don’t have edges. Therefore, it is impossible to keep a circle from rotating. Your only option is to get a square actuator, like on the Happ sticks.

You might as well order a whole new stick. But I doubt it’ll fit in the namco box.

What are you trying to say now? That you want to freeze everything in place?

Several things you might be trying to explain

  1. Joystick shaft turns and you want to keep it from rotating when you play on it
  2. Balltop spins around on the joystick shaft and you want to keep it from rotating around the shaft when you play on it
  3. You want the balltop to not move at all (no idea why you’d want this, your stick would be useless)

Pick one.

LOL, I used to have the same problem, the balltop keeps getting loose, to fix that, just remove the bottom of the case, and at the bottom of the stick there is a slot, place a coin in the slot and hold it there while you tighten the balltop on the shaft.

That is all.

Thanks, that seems to of worked. Unfortunately I don’t believe there’s a direct solution, as the balltop still slightly moves, but this is fine for now.

Oh, and number 2.

Yeah, you have to BEAR down on it, really tighten the hell out of it. Mine hasen’t moved since, but I can still get it off.

I didn’t tighten the hell out of it, but at least it isn’t as loose. It was just rotating in an endless circle before. Is it worth looking at buying the Street Fighter Anniversary stick? I need an alternative, and can’t import.

My options are either SFA stick, or x-arcade. But shoryuken members loathe x-arcade for some reason.

x-arcade is horrible, thats why, and the SF:AE stick is almost not better. The stock Namco is perfect as is, it’s a real amazing stick. Just order a different balltop, any balltop from a sanwa will fit the top of that thing, but you really shouldn’t have to.

I can’t order online so I highly doubt I’ll be doing any ordering anytime soon.

The only reason why I’m looking for an alternative is because the magic box doesn’t detect this current stick, as it’s PS1. I need a PS2, xbox or DC-connection stick where I can successfully use it via a magic box for SFAC, Metal Slug, and MAME games.

There is no reason a PS1 stick shouldn’t work with a Magic Box.

Well, trust me, it doesn’t. I’ve tried more than once, and using my namco arcade stick through a magic box is basically not possible. It automatically shoots; Metal Slug and 3rd Strike have proven to me this.

It’s really annoying, too. My guess is because it isn’t a “PS2” stick, seeing as how the magic box is compatible with PS2, DC, and Saturn, but nothing says anything about PS1 sticks.

There really is no such thing as a “PS2” stick. The HRAP, etc are technically Playstation sticks since they don’t have any analog buttons or controls; they’re all digital, and they work just fine on a PSX or PSOne console. Something must be up with your Namco stick because I don’t recall having any problems with my Namco stick using a Magic Box.

Great. Just great. I have ONE namco arcade stick - and it’s faulty? Oh this is just perfect.

I’ll try it again in a minute, and let you know. Although I would of imagined that if it were faulty, it would be causing errors and/or random button presses when played on a PS2, too. Which it doesn’t.

…well, I’ve tried it again, and it’s still doing it. It’s pressing a few buttons every few secons, buttons which I don’t know, but it’s pressing them. I don’t know how to fix this either.

Double post.

Ok buddy, the Namco has a HORI pcb, not a PS1 dual shock. the PS1 pads work BETTER with converters and custom sticks than PS2 hacked ones do. The Hori PCB is DIFFERENT. All you have to do to make it work with the converters is mod the inside to a PS1 Dual Shock PCB. Problem solved.
