A JPG saved at high quality is miniscule compared to a png.
They also look the same.

All I see are squares. Png’s own because you can have alpha.
PNGs have their rightful place in the family of web image formats. Mike touched on the alpha channel. That allows for some nice tranparency effects among other things. Just like choosing the correct format for the picture between GIF and JPG, you still need to be wise when figuring out which images will have a good file size using PNG. PNG seems to be closer to GIF in the encoding scheme (solid blocks of color do better, and it uses an indexed color pallette). It allows for lossless (iirc) encoding (unlike JPGs) and a larger (24-bit) pallette than GIFs. It has its benefits and is a solid 3rd option for web images.
