I main Zangief and have learned the timing of reversals pretty well. That plus piano’ing the keystrokes gives me 6x the chance to get 'em in a reverse SPD. Works 95% of the time if I’m within the correct distance.
Now the question I have here is… how come vs SOME PEOPLE on XBL … I cannot reverse them, like… EVER. (Also, cannot tick throw them at all, either. Even if they’re not getting a “Reversal”)
Example: I play vs a Dictator - which I like to reverse their Roundhouse Scissor Kick (That starts pretty close, so its well within distance to reverse) but when I attempt the reverse it NEVER WORKS… not at all. This person can just jump away (or straight up + into a kick to my head) instantly after missing (and me blocking) the special move. This is rather annoying as reversals are a strong part of my game :).
Is this because of some latency? I do get the “REVERSAL” pop-up … so I am timing it correctly! The game itself shows no sign of lagging, no stuttering in gameplay or anything.
Again this is like only against 3-4 different people on XBL. Different characters but the same outcome. They jump out of my reversals or can always do a quick attack right after they miss a move on me.
Its probably lag. Weird things happen to me too. For example: I can easily get Honda’s buttsmash and Guile’s flash kick to come out, but when I try to do the headstomp with Bison he always jumps up or just does nothing. Sometimes the retardation of this game drives me nuts.
Dictator can’t always be punished off of Scissors. Watch how they hit you - the scissors have 2 hits to them. If he hits you too deep, then he is punishable by anything. If he hits you with the tip of his boot on the second hit, then he has time to jump away, usually with :mp:. It’s just a matter of him using the right Scissors at the right distance.
Same principle as Cammy’s drill. If she does it from too close, her body ends up kind of “inside” the opponent. That’s too deep, and if blocked, welcome to combo city. If Cammy hits you with the tip of her foot, then she returns to neutral far enough and fast enough for it to be safe.
Raakam: Yeah, I was talking about the 2 blocked hits that end up with him deep inside. I can get the “reversal” message and still not get the grab.
Same thing can happen with certain Ken’s jumping in with a MK or FK (blocked) and then them going straight into a Shoryuken. Reversal message pop up but the SRK ends up contacting.
Annoying!. I’ll have to look into the Frame Advantages, never have before…
That’s called playing a good dic player. As Raakam said, they have the knee press distances/timing all down and will hit you just at the tip for safety (enough frame advantage on their end to jump before you recover, even with a reversal) and bait your spd attempt. Now, if they were great dic players, they’d overhead you as they jumped away while you were whiffing your spd.
If you get the reversal message then that means you executed your move the exact frame after your recovery ends. If your opponent was able to hit you even though you got the reversal message then that means that their move had frame advantage and they recovered first.
Same thing can happen with certain Ken’s jumping in with a MK or FK (blocked) and then them going straight into a Shoryuken. Reversal message pop up but the SRK ends up contacting.

This is the timeline of events:
You block the attack
Ken starts his SRK
Your block stun ends
You do a reversal SPD which whiffs because Ken is doing his SRK
The SRK hits you
The SRK doesn’t hit on the first frame, which means there is a period of time where he can be doing an SRK without you being hit by it. During that time any reversal you get is going to be stuffed.
Well im not sure why everyone wrote what they did, its not really right if the (DIC) player used light kick Knee Press to where just bison toes are hitting you, then as long as there holding up you can not throw them or SPD them the only time you can is if they use MK or HK or use LK and then try to hit you on the ground of course your SPD will always win out, So aslong as there using LK and there hitting you with there toes you cant reverse at all…
Well one of his facts are wrong, either the guy is NOT doing reversals, or the dic was NOT doing deep rh scissor kicks. If the dictator is really doing deep scissor kicks (it’s not hard to tell) and reversal spd is coming out but not connecting, there’s something fucked up going on. I wouldn’t put it past HDR at this point to have reversal messages come out for things that aren’t reversal. >_>
Whoa whoa…that depends on which Shoryuken is being done. Remember…the :hp: Shoryuken has zero startup and hits on the first frame. Otherwise, you’re right…a Shoryuken done before Zangief’s reversal SPD so that the invincible hitting frames are making contact during Zangief’s reversal SPD window will always win.
Of course…blocking a Shoryuken should just about guarantee you a SPD opportunity.

Same principle as one of the many forms of option select found in ST… in the corner for some characters. The difference is that in this version the attacking character can option select the DP and a throw. In your scenario the player is committing to the DP meaning the correct choice would most likely always be to block (unless you have a move with more invincible frames).
