just curious, how come alvin lee doesnt do the interior art for sf comics any more? i spose its cuz hes busy with dark stalkers?
speaking of SF art.
no offense but i find the art in street fighter has been lacking as of late.
i seriously think SF needs an art boost. regardless if alvin is doing the work or not, the work published in the recent issues arnt top notch and i know i cant expect every issue to be perfect every time but it doesnt seem like any imporvent has been made.
seems to me ds has surpass the sf comic in quality over story and art, even though SF has much greater potential and much larger fan base.
i guess theres been enuff comments about the whole delta red thing, so i wont go there. but i always thought the focus of the sf story was revolved around ryu and his interactions with other world warriors.
anyways imho i feel that this second arc hasnt advanced the story at all. it feels like one big backup story for cammy. seems kind of sidetracked to me.
well, heres looking forward to the new year and what udon has to offer iin 2005.
My opinion is that you need to read other threads and see for yourself who’s going to be doing the art and why Alvin is no longer on Street Fighter.
It’s been mentioned at least 3 times now.
Erik Ko has already made statements concerning the art quality and what characters will be front and center for the next couple issues.
Well I’ve always been most at home with Alvin Lee’s artwork. He for me, has come the closest to the Capcom feel, with Arnold Tsang coming in a close second.
However, I have no complaints with the Street Fighter series as it is now. It’s nice to see the series going in directions other than the established Capcom style. Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to have Tsang, Lee, and co. still draw it completely from time to time to bring it back to its roots.
As for the story, it still seems good. This is the comic book, and our chance to know more about the characters we play as in ways we never got to know them throughout the course of the fighting games. That’s why I’m glad Udon is taking time to develop the characters, so that the comics can be true supplements to the games, not just the SF1 - SF3 games redone in comic book form. Just my opinion.
I agree. It’s amazing how much people ask at times. I’m interested in some of the new artists’ work and I do love when Alvin and Arnold can put their work in. Some of the artists seem to almost be assigned to designated characters and their stories…I like that.
Unfortunately I have to agree with Enzan.
I’m sure Udon makes a 100% effort in any new issue but, as a matter of fact, I really miss Alvin Lee’s art.
Unfortunately i missed the thread where it was explained why he was switched to darkstalkers (can anybody tell me?), but i cannot help thinking why this change occurred if the street fighter comic was succesful the way it was…
Actually I’m enthusiastic with the new darkstalkers comic and I started collecting this series too, but I’m a little disappointed that this meant such a change for the street fighter one.
Now, the art of #11 and 12 is not bad at all, is only that I preferred far more the old one…Some characters end up with very weird faces now, like they weren’t looking anywhere, expecially some chun li and cammys…
before ppl get on the offensive, i said that it doesnt matter if alvin is working on it or not. there is no excuse for the art the way it has been in the last few issues. regardless of whose in charge i dont care, but its obvious that the quality seems a bit rushed and inconsistent.
the guys at udon can obviously draw, thats why they made a career out of it. besides if my perspective about things being rushed wrong… then that page swap wouldnt have happen.
yea mistakes occur, and its no big deal, i dont care that it happen, but arnt there editors and ppl who are put in charge that the final product turns out right?
isnt it kind of like buying a new car and driving it but then finding out the brakes dont work? yea its not that extreme but the analogy makes sense.
rite… and im not questioning the direction they are taking with the chracters, all i said was the 2nd arc feels like one giant backup story.
what good is an explanation for the artwork if there hasnt been any changes made? its just like the dealer saying umm yea, the brakes dont work…so? fix it. if its a recognized problem on their part then why hasnt there been any changes?
It’s a catch 22. If they take the time to “fix” the artwork, it’ll be late and everyone will complain that it’s late. If they keep it on time, then the art has to suffer somewhat, and everyone complains about that.
It’s real easy for people who either are not in the industry, or have no idea how it works, to simply say “fix it”.
If you actually read the other threads, you’d know that Arnold is doing 95% of the art in the next couple issues because it’ll be Ryu, Ken, Guile against Balrog and Vega. Udon divided up the art chores based on character storys. Arnold got Ryu/Ken, Omar/Alvin got Chun Li/Cammy.
Its already late. Constantly. They took a month here, a month there… I can only assume theyre late and also have quality drops because theyre biting more than they can chew. Side-projetcs, one artist working at two things at a time, maybe?
Thats my assumption, because theres no reason a single artist wouldnt be able to do 24 pages a month (which is interesting, because SFs stories have 18 to 20 pages - less than the industry average).
There are pencillers that can do 48 pages a month without the quality dropping or missing the schedule… Others do 24 but also ink their own pages…
You make it sound so easy. Artists are people, not machines, it takes a lot of effort to do what we do. People get tired, they have personal problems, they get sick, they wake up in the morning some days and DON’T WANT to draw, or hit a block. Some people are just slow and certain processes take them longer than others.
The artists that can do 48 pages a month and ink their own work have been in this industry for decades. I know who you’re talking about. People like Joe Kubert, and John Romita JR. That takes YEARS and YEARS of practice and refining. No one picks up a pencil and can suddenly draw as fast and as well as Joe Kubert, he makes it look easy. They are not the industry norm. They are what the rest of us are striving to achieve.
Jim Lee can’t do a monthly book.
Mike Turner can’t do a monthly book.
Joe Mad can’t do a monthly book.
J.Scott can’t do a monthly book.
A lot of the time issues are done well in advance and it SEEMS like they’re keeping up, but then eventually it catches up to them. (Jim Lee’s Batman for example, he had 100 pages DONE months before the first issue even saw print)
Udon isn’t Marvel, they’re a much newer and smaller company. Erik Ko said they’re taking March off, and Arnold is doing most of the next couple issues.
Udon hit a snag with their Capcom work, Erik has already admitted to this.
Obviously they pulled their staff to do the best possible work they could do on it. It was their time to shine and make a mark on a video game. Which can open up doors for them elsewhere provided they do a good job, and they did.
I can only imagine the deadlines and quality demanded by the people at Capcom.
The comic kept trucking along because YOU GUYS would have had their heads if it didn’t. You’re all real understanding after you have the comic in your hands. “Oh, I would have waited longer for better quality”, yet before people are posting numerous threads “Where’s issue #? Why isn’t it done, where is it? I WANT MY COMICS COME ON GUYS STOP BEING LAZY AND DO YOUR JOBS!!” Also, it’s a business, they don’t make money if they don’t put out issues. Plain and simple.
Udon is very dedicated to the fans and tries to make everyone happy while keeping themselves in business. Something a lot of you seem to take for granted.
Why does it bother you so much when people have negative opinions on the comic? Do you get a cut of the sales or something? Is it your newborn son? No really, tell me. Do you jackoff on the Cammy and Chun-li panels every week? All I ever see you do is post in every single thread and flame whoever has an opinion. You fucking troll.
Maybe it bothers him to see people get chewed out unnecessarily. It’s simply amazing to me that you could read his post and then insult him. He isn’t the one with issues, dude. You are.
If it pisses you off so much I have an AIM icon that you can always click on. Feel free to take up with me personally, I’m usually around.
Be sure to click the attachment! :pleased:
Good points, Apathy-Inc. It exhausting trying to do a monthly comic. Especially with life, school and other projects that the UDON team has to do. I’m a little upset about the lateness, but it’s not like Udoneko hasn’t explained why. I would welcome SF and DS becoming bi-monthly for a couple of issues just to get back on track. The only problem with that is that half the audience would lose interest.
Thanks for your link Sagatryu :karate:
I feel much better now that i read udon is aware of the problem, and I’m sure art is going to be back to the usual standard soon.
On the other hand, I’m worried about what’s happening to darkstalkers… #2 is very very good, the problem might have been issue 1 was a generic introduction to the series, so that its story didn’t seem that catchy. I hope everybody gives the new comic another chance.
It would be a pity if that means we have to renounce to rival schools…
I’d welcome this too. Gives me a chance to save up for the next issue and all the variants.
But Leo Sal’s right. A good number of the audience would probably give up on it. I myself have a habit of not getting my mind off what might happen next issue. This is true especially of the DS series, since I’m not particularly familiar with the canon.
i been to scared to say that the arts been kinda crap lately , because i knew i’d offend people on this board , but im glad to hear that alvin will be doin the art again, honestly his art looks like an animation or sumtin…
this is true, it must be tiring especially when personl issues get involved but guess what. its work. they are getting paid, and we pay them.
everybody works, everybody goes to school. how is a comic book different from say daily newspapers that are published everyday? every week? yea i know its tuff but they made a career out of it, they have deadlines to meet and quality to keep up. it really is that simple.
everyone wakes up and goes to work or school, everyone gets sick. for instance video game developers spend numerous hours and years trying to meet deadlines and you know what? they push back release dates to ensure top quality. sf comics use to come out at the begining to middle of the week, now its pushed back to the end and even so it still feels rushed. hoestly i dont even remeber what happens in the previous issues, and i find it a hassle to read them again because i find it weak. i cant be the only one. this is truly sad, i know.
i know that must of the udon crew are still in school, and it must be very tuff, but hey if they dont have the time to balance everything out, then maybe they should find new people give the others a break until they are ready to handle it.
and honestly i wouldnt mind if they were released by monthly as long as they keep it interesting, that way they wont lose reaaders but rather im worried they will lose readers the way things have been progressing as of late. i spend 5 bucks on each sf comics, and truly it hasnt been worth it, not as of late. i could instead spend that 5 bucks on another comic or food, but guess what i dont becasue i want to support udon and i know they are trying to fix it, but i feel really let down.
