My Online Journal

Hi guys:

Being new to this game (but no new to fighting games) I’ve created this thread to post my online progress in SF x Tekken. I really like this game and I’m looking forward for the 2013 patch.

A little background first:

I’m from Peru (you´ll have to excuse my english, I’ll try to do my best). I’ve been playing fighting games since Street Fighter II. My favorites right now are SFIV: AE and SF x Tekken of course. Also I have played King of Fighters (97,98,99,2000 and 2002) some MVC and Tekken.

I’ll keep posting my progress and I’ll try to upload videos. Hope you like them.

PD: Thanks to Intuitive2011 for the warming welcome to this forum.

UPDATE: I decided to put little off topic info here: I also play guitar and currently I’m on a Papa Roach cover band. It’s really fun to play their songs (Infest album). I listen to many bands but my favorite one is RUSH. I’m currently listening to bands like Animals as Leaders, Protest The Hero, The Human Abstract, Intervals, etc. I recomend them if anyone likes metalcore/hardcore/progressive rock.

I work in an IT company here (mostly Housing, Hosting OnDemand and SaaS development and implementation). I have a girlfriend (living together for about 7 years) and a lovely 4 year old daughter called Fernanda.

Now my first post:

Yesterday my resolution was not to jump and crossup that much. The results? won 18 matches from 30 matches played online. Thanks to all the guys for their advice. Tonight I’ll try some BnBs and hope to make it better than last night. I play with Ryu/Ken btw. Any advice on changing someone from my team?

Remember guys, this is different from the ranting thread/match critique thread. So don’t come with your hate for certain characters here, instead break it down. IE, I feel Ryu’s Cr.Mp is really good, why can I just launch it? :stuck_out_tongue: (I kid I kid).

It’s going to be fun to see what you have to write.

For me personally Ryu / Ken seems kinda boring to play but if you think otherwise stick with it ~~

Ryu/Zangief is a really strong team, so to is Ryu/Kazuya. It depends on who you like really.

they are not that boring… yesterday i won a fight against a Kazuya/Jack team… made really good decisions there… i was in the position of losing the match and then I ABC Jack with Ken, then St.Lp, HP SRK with Ryu and then again SRK with Ken… won the two rounds this way… i know they are not the best combos but they made the job… lost to a turtling Juri though… I didn’t figure out how to aproach her…

a grappler maybe a good teammate… I’ll try them on the weekend maybe… Kazuya it´s not my style… his specials moves require great execution and I’m still working on it…

No offense but

is the definition of boring gameplay (again, for me personally), doesn’t it feel like playing the same character with slightly different normals?

non taken… just remeber I just started playing this game so I think: first learn the principles and move on from there… no one can run without walking first…

While I personally wouldn’t like to fight it, Ryu/Ken is a good team to start with. Great to get fundamentals and basics down

Once you feel you got a feel for the fundamentals, try experimenting with cross cancels (MP+MK on hit/block) to see what’s a safe tag and what combos for big damage. For instance, I like my Vega/Cammy team cause if I get a HK Scarlet Terror off Vega, I can tag into Cammy for a j.HK before landing with st.MP, st.HP xx HK Cannon Spike for a big chunk of damage.

You should definitely try out Ryu/Law. Both are very beginner friendly, they have strong team synergy, damage output can be massive, and you’ll have a zoner/frame trapping offensive rush down mix.

You may want consider to Law as the point character instead of Ryu because Law has a huge damage output without meter. Also Law can build a lot of meter, and Ryu really needs meter to get the best damage out of him.

Im excited to hear about your progress as a player. Good luck!!!

that’s a good one… tonight I´ll get into training mode with them… I will be sticking to Ryu as point though cause yesterday I played him SFIV style with good results… unless I got to the point of really knowing how to play with others…thanks for the advice!..

EDIT: I’m getting a video capturer to upload videos and make this thread interesting…

Yesterday´s resolution: fight more skilled players online… results: won 8 of 25 matches… the funny thing was that the more the skilled players is, the more is the turtling… still having troubles with turtling Juris (seems like a favorite to these kind of players)… less trouble on blocking Kazuya and Jin strings… I hate Heihachi BTW… fought a really weird Kuma (i had trouble because he had the “teddy bear” costume)…any advice on how to beat these guys?..

PS: video capturer arrives next week so i’ll post maybe 2 to 3 videos per day to show you guys…

You played Ryu/Ken yesterday? Don’t be afraid to overhead if your opposition is just going to turtle. Or throw fireballs, as that will get them moving. Just be careful with Ken’s, his fireballs have really bad recovery.
Hmm…fighting Heihachi is very tricky, I believe you need to be very aware of your spacing. As his F+MP hits low, and at the right distance it can combo into his ground bounce target combo. What I would recommend is for you to spend some time in training mode, specifically with the characters you’re having problems with, in order to understand how they work.

I did play Ryu/Ken, haven´t trained Law yet… Heihachi had this overhead move that came from a St HP punch i guess… aaaaalways fell fot that… and then the bounce combos that deal great damage… i was thinking on switching to Guile instead of Ken… the recovery of the sonic boom is way faster and you can AA them… tried that on training mode and work everytime, some trades though but i can live with that…

Trust me, head to the training mode to figure out Heihachi’s mixups. Guile would be a solid replacement for Ken, although he doesn’t possess Ken’s great combos, mixups, damage or tag in capabilities.

yep… that´s the downside of Guile but it´s a more defensive character so therse can be some balance between him and Ryu… question: Hehe target achi’s mixups are his target combos?.. any video showing his mixups so i can reproduce them?..

I’d just like to point out that against a good Juri (which is one of the characters he’s having issues with)… fireballs will ***not ***nessacerily get her moving (Kasatushi defensively all day long for free) and infact will just get him smacked… especially ken’s, which she can punish at any distance. Approach her cautiously and from the ground if she’s turtling, only jump if it’s a deep crossup.

Yes, use his target combos, and also use his unique normals. Also, set the computer to ‘All Guard’, so you can see what way to block.

In that case, what would you recommend to get a Juri to stop turtling?

It’s pretty interesting to read about your progress, so keep it up I’d say.
