My idea for a fighting game. (In progress, help is appreciated. :D)

Well, I guess this the introduction part. This is my first thread on SRK, so please be nice.

The thing is I want to go to college for video game design and I haven’t the money yet and yadah, yadah, my life drama.

But enough of my drama, lol. I’m making this thread to request some help on a fighting game I’ll (hopefully) make when I (hopefully) get into making video games. And what better way to ask for help on somethings for a fighting game than a fighting game forum.

The theme for the fighters is that they are all a personification of a Universal concepts, such as love and hate. The list of concepts in the roster below:

[details=Spoiler]
Death, Life, Love, Hate, Chaos, Order, “Good”, “Evil”, War, Peace, Mind, Soul, Time, Space, Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Thunder, Ice.[/details]
I am asking for help on how they will look. I have the looks finalized (for now) for Death and Life. See the spoiler right below this. I’m not artistic, so it’s just a description.

Spoiler

Death
He is a skeleton in a raggedy-looking black/purple hooded robe. Also bearing a stone cross chained to his back. Wields a scythe to attack.

Life
She is a plant/flower-like being. Her dress is made of flowers and leaves. Her hair is made of grasses and vines for bangs and a flower blooming on the top of her head. She attacks using vines, seeds, spores, etc.

I have a little bit done for “Good” and “Evil” but they aren’t finished yet. The progress so far:

Spoiler

‘Good’
He uses a chakram to attack. By default it’s on his back, resting. It levitates and spins while he uses it.

‘Evil’
He has red skin, horns on his head, like the devil. Spikes protruding along his spine. A pointed tail and using chains to attack.

Any and all input is appreciated greatly. In the event that this game gets made, I’ll give credit to all the people who gave input and helped me on this. Credit will be listed in the next post and to what said poster has added.

UPDATES!

[details=Spoiler]
It’ll be a 2.5D game with a Weapon system.[/details]

The first thing I want to know before I give any advice or suggestions is how serious are you about getting this done? Have you started anything besides character/system concepts? Do you have anyone helping you with this?

I am very serious. If I get into making games I am doing this (along with my other ideas).

Not yet, I first want to get the visuals done for the characters.

No, I don’t have anyone helping me with this yet. This is my fighting game idea that I need help on.

well fellow programmer, this will take alot of work and I would say that before you start your character design you might want to think about what type of game mechanics are you designing? Do you have any ideas on how to make your title stand apart from other games like say sf or the mvc series?
also have you given any thought on what you will be using to make your game possible, Im sure your local library must have alot of game design and programming books you can start reading so you can get familiar with. Also xbox has a type of programming language for aspiring game designers call XNA, also apple has the same thing. Here are some of the things you may want to think about before you do any type of character design.

I’m not quite a programmer yet and I’m still in the planning stages and taking notes, so I don’t really have any ideas for mechanics and making it stand apart. And while I am usually good at coming up with good/semi-good ideas on the spot, I am tired (because it’s almost 2:30 a.m. where I am.) and when I’m tired I’m a zombie.

But In all seriousness, I knew Apple had a different programming language than Xbox/Microsoft, but I just don’t know how radically different it could be from others. I guess more I’ll have to study in College/Uni, eh? I will definitely keep those things in mind.

I’ll be heading off to bed now. Goodnight people.

GO PLANET!!!..I’m sorry I had to do it

I’m in the same boat dude. I have ideas for a fighting game, and I need to learn more programming language. However, the tutorials I found for the program I used called Game Maker were very helpful, and with a little experimenting with the program’s functions, I’m confident I can make a stable fighting game. It may not be the best game, and will sure won’t have netplay, but I can establish a game where two or more characters fight each other with combos and throws and such.

I suggest you download it and give it a try. It’s drag-and-drop so it’s easy to pick up and use.

Just remember, if you want your game to be successful overseas, you must have a loli in your roster.

“A” loli?

Not even BB gets away with merely one.

@OP: The other solution, for over-seas approval, is gay wrestling.

HNK has the heter-bro angle on lockdown.

What skills do you currently have? What is your current highest level of education? What knowledge have you attained in the past month?

Which state (if in the US) do you live in?

If you don’t mind me asking.

Ok, Let’s see…
1)(I’m assuming this is with computers) I have CAD skills, can make and maintain a website. Plus I can learn pretty much any skill with ease.
2) High school graduate with honours in grade 10.
3) I haven’t gained any knowledge (that I didn’t already know) about computers in the past month. Been out of school for a year.
4) I live out in the middle of nowhere out in Ontario, Canada.

Lol. Nice one bro. XD

Game maker from this site? http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/windows

I plan to make other games too from different genres, (especially one I’ve been planning/making ideas for for the past 2 years) but I’m just asking about fighting games because i don’t seem to know as much about them as I could.

Hmmmm… I well definitely keep all that in mind.

Coming from a fellow game designer, here are the tips I can give you to get on the right track.

Anyone can come up with a good idea for a game. Making it is another thing. You need to learn various skills to even get this thing going.
You need animation skills, scripting skills for various languages. If it is going to be an online game you need to learn how to build and maintain a database.
Math skills, you need to be able to script the game properly and effectively. You need some artistic skills so you can design the characters and environments.
You will probably have to make some friends, not many people have all of the necessary skills to make a game on their own. Not to mention someone to do sound and music also.

You need to figure out which platform the game will play on, I suggest starting off with Adobe Flash. It is a very easy to use program and Actionscript is fairly easy to learn and use. You need to also figure out everything on paper before you even begin. And I am not talking about environments and characters, I mean how the game engine mechanics will work.

I would take classes, go to school. Community colleges often have good programs for game design. But just know the courses are aimed at getting you an entry level position at a game studio. Not to help you create a game from the ground up.

What he said.

I think you are taking on too much for one person, especially seeing as you don’t have all the skills needed and really it’s pretty unrealistic to attain all those skills. Really, the game you are thinking of I can almost guarantee you won’t be able to make yourself. And with a team comes a lot of other problems, especially resources (ie. software and budget). I’m currently only in Uni studying game design but I have and have acquired quite a bit of understanding of the process, I do suggest you try and get into a game design course, make sure that you will have contact with industry professionals; they have bee the greatest help, far and above the course content.

Once you do get to a point where you can make the game, remember that not everyone will understand your idea as you do and will not be attached to it, it will probably go through many iterations before anything solid is formed. One of the first things most courses I know of teach is the ability to iterate on a design and not get too attached to specific details/ideas.

Also, there really aren’t any good options for engines. If you can’t get someone to design the engine, MUGEN is seriously the best option. It’s not great, or even good really but noone has really made any public sourced engine I know of for fighting games.

close this thread and come back when youve learned to program and built your engine

and then close that thread because you won’t have an artist

You don’t actually need an artist to make the framework for a good game then get an artist later. Please don’t bash on the guy for asking for input and advice.

Alright. You are now on background art and HUD duty. As noted above, you must immediately acquaint yourself with a 2D engine.

There’s Fighter Maker 2k:

Game Maker:
(lol)

Scirra Construct
(this isn’t a fighting game, but this is an example of the visual quality possible with the engine. I know you could tweak this into a fighter with a combo system though)

Flash

and, uh… MUGEN.
(lol)

I’m assuming that you’re thinking of a 2D fighter and not a 3D one, although that’s also a viable option in something like Unity or UDK. I can also think of several reasons 3D models would ultimately be easier and less time consuming than 2D sprites, but that’s only if you have or know modelers and animators with a solid foundation in animation already.

Pare down your character concepts to, at most, eight characters. Fighting games are ludicrously difficult to create. Any game is difficult to finish, and fighters are that much worse. You can add more characters in future releases/updates to your game… but try not to even think about that so far. I’d probably lean toward FM2K (Vanguard Princess, a bunch of other doujin fighters) or MUGEN (Capcom Fighting Evolution). These are engines that are already designed with fighters in mind and your contribution will mainly be the HUD, sprites and move properties.

Finally, do a ton of research. Play or look up as many fighters as you can: even the ass ones. ESPECIALLY the ass ones.

@Maxwell755 @Tomo009
That is what the college will be for. If i go that is… -_-'
And I never said I’d would do all of this myself. And don’t worry, I easily make friends.

@Bowling Pin
I will definitely look over all of these asap.

Thanks guys. :D:D:D:D:D:D
