My fightstick... first one ever... will be done monday 21st

Yeah, in some other countries, there are cabinets that have one player with buttons on the right, and one player with buttons on the left.

It’s not all that uncommon for people to be used to buttons on the right. There are lots of people who build Mame cabinets that have the option to play that way also.

No. Don’t get me wrong, play however you want, but your terminology is wrong.

We are actually right-handed players. The layout you are making is left-handed (sometimes called Mexican style).

It’s just like how on a right-handed guitar, you finger the fretboard with your left hand. By your definition, that would be a left-handed guitar, which it isn’t.

Like I said earlier, default is:
[ ] /\ R1 L1
X O R2 L2

In standard mapping this makes it so the buttons are:
LP MP HP
LK MK HK

If you are trying to reverse this for some reason so your punches/kicks go from strong to weak instead of weak to strong, you want this mapping:

R1 /\ [ ]
R2 O X

This would result in:

HP MP LP
HK MK LK

L1 and L2 are default mapped as Px3 and Kx3.

Ideally, you want to use the default button mapping for consoles, as it saves time configing your stick when you play at other people’s places. Given that your stick uses a non-standard layout, it’s not like you will be using your friend’s sticks ever or vice versa, IE, you’ll be changing sticks and having to reset buttons a lot if you use a non-default layout, which is annoying to say the least.

ur are correct…
i dont know the difference between R1,R2 and L1,L2 on Street Fighter 4 since they both do the same thing… same kick and same punch… so if i put the R1,R2 instead of L1,L2 it will make no difference
the [ ] /\ O and X are goin to be like
R/L1 [ ] /
R/L2 X O
something like that like i said… its not done yet but i want all my punches on bottom and kicks on top… i also want them in a seq like… lower punch/kick, mid punch/kick, strong punch/kick and since the R and Ls seem to be the strong punch i might put them closest to the stick

actually they are different in sf4.

R1 = HP
R2 = HK
L1 = PPP
L2 = KKK

It’s really hard to give you advice sometimes as your reading comprehension isn’t very good. I’m never sure whether you’re going to actually read what a wrote, or just read the first two words and think you already know what I’m going to say, heh.

Anyway, like I originally said and the above poster said again, L1/L2 and R1/R2 are not mapped to the same thing in SF4 (nor in most other Capcom games) R1/R1 is HP/HK respectively, and L1/L2 is Px3 and Lx3 respectively. So if you want to use default mapping, use R1/R2, not L1/L2.

Also, why would you want punches on the bottom? I guess it doesn’t really matter, but if you ever play arcade, you’re going to be all mixed up.

Punches on the bottom?

BARCA, you’re not even making a mirror correctly. You’re making your joystick Jimi Hendrix style. You have some Dyslexic tendencies.

By the way, I do like how the picture fits the stick/button layout. Buttons/stick not cutting off Kyu/Ryu’s heads.

Ah you beat me to it. I was going to say the exact same thing

anywho…Why not just put the default layout and just change the mapping ingame?

i do read the post… i aint stupid… what u guys dont understand is that i made that layout way before i even started the project… by that i mean the box and cutting everything…
the layout of the buttons… shouldnt really be a concern since i play how i want.
i want the kicks on the top just becuz i feel more comfortable that way period.
i was playin street fighter i couldnt really tell the difference between the Ls and the Rs they did the same thing to me… either kicked once or punched once…

i didnt know posting a layout that is so old and was intended mainly to place the buttons and stick on the right position will cause so much attention… i couldve put U,T,Y,P for the buttons… it didnt matter to me at that point… like i said on my first threat “IM GOING TO PLACE THE BUTTONS DIFFERENTLY ACCORDING TO HOW ST4 IS” and thats it…
dont worry much about the layout… what u should take from the layout is the buttons are on the left, stick is on the right, buttons dont cover much of artwork. street fighter and SNK logo at the bottom corners… period thats what it was intended for… just for placement refrerence…

i do see you guys hate on anything thats different…
stick on the right… WHAT, R U MENTAL ?? come on its just a fuckin stick
kicks on the top ?? punches on bottom ??? OHHH HELL NO… theyre just buttons u press… whats the difference between top or bottom… get fuckin real…

u know i might as well just put
W,E,R
S,D,F
as my buttons since thats what i use when im playin emulators lol
it looks like u guys dont even READ the posted comments before posting ur own… i mention before the layout was first phased… period

i’m speechless

how is that lol

I’m facepalming pretty hard over here. So much relevant advice being given by the tech-heads here, and 831 just throws it in your faces. Amazing.

first of all i appreciate all the help and advice…
when i put SF4 on my ps3 i went to practice… i pressed all the buttons and wrote what they did so i can put them how i want on my layout… Ls and Rs seem to do the same thing… try this urself…
and i dont throw it in ur faces its just that if i want to make a stick… i dont have to follow all the rules… like button mapping and stick placement… or whats on top and whats on bottom…
some guy mention something about me not making a mirror correcly
i never said i was makin a mirror of anything …

im done going back and forth with the ppl on this forum… just because my stick might not be like others here doesnt mean im doing it WRONG…
JDM714 is the only guy in this forum that has given me REAL help everybody else is like…
this is wrong… this should be here… ur stick is filpped… not making a mirror stick right… ur kicks on top?..
the stick is being done the way U SEE for a reason.

i will not be surprise if someone actually complains about the box being rectangular…

L1 presses 3 punches at once, which if you try to dragon punch with akuma using L1 you will end up teleporting. It does make a difference if you press L1 or R1,
try pressing all three punches at the same time, a fierce punch comes out even though you pressed all 3…

if you don’t understand ask for someone to explain, as for your overall layout, it’s whatever you want to do with it. Good luck.

edit: better yet, when you run your test, use zangief and default button settings and you will see a difference in L1 and R1

ok kool… see when i did my test i wasnt movin the analog stick i was just standin pressin the buttons… thats why it did same thing… kool thanx…

So i guess 3rd time is the charm since it took you 3 replies to realize that the L1/2 and R1/2 are different.

no i knew they were different… no shit Ls and Rs
what i was tryin to say is they both seem to do same thing kick punch… but when u move the analog stick to do certain tricks thats when the difference shows…
but it wouldve been easy fix anyway just unplug quick disconnects from Rs and put them to Ls or vice versa still not and issue to get all crazy about…

thats all part of the final troubleshootin process.

update… ive been very busy gthis couple of days and havent had a chance to work on it stick
ill keep u guys posted.

I don’t recommend you doing this at all as the R1/R2 buttons are necessary for SF4 for HP and HK. L1 and L2 are not required as they are essentially just shortcut buttons for pressing all three punches or all three kicks at the same time. How else are you going to do Akuma’s heavy shoryuken without a HP button, or any heavy special move without using EX? The shortcut buttons are only needed if you play on a pad and can’t press all three buttons with your thumb.

Before you make any more claims about what you think is best for the button map layout, I think you should spend a lot more time playing SF4 and try the trial challenges with different characters.

Make sure you use those QDs(quick disconnects) then…
and that you don’t need to reconfigure while playing with default button config.

Theoretically(coz I haven’t done it), it is possible to put the buttons in different positions…but still have each button assigned to its default action.
(edit wait I have actually… )

e.g. you want your buttons like this:
HK LK MK
HP LP MP

you won’t need to reconfigure…when you still have [] assigned as LP…/\ as MP…and so on.
