My 1st Tournament

My first tournament was in 2002. CvS2 tournament at Chinatown Fair.

I played Justin first round. I accidentally picked the wrong groove. I was nervous, so I didn’t even say anything about it. I lost (the match wasn’t too bad though), but then I ran through losers’ and wound up getting 7th out of like 60 people.

So yeah… the moral is that you have to keep at it, no matter how you might start. Stay confident.

If you ever want to round robin, send me a pm.

I have never participated in a real tournament … :frowning:

It happens to almost all people… you think you are great, getting a lot of wins vs your friends, random people online, etc… so yeah let’s kick ass at the tournament ! Then you enter and you get smacked around without knowing what to do about it, you get even more nervous and get smacked around some more.

I want to my 3rd tournament last week, the competition wasn’t good at all in the side of the bracket I was in. All went great until the finals, where I had to play a really good Sagat player (he’s one of the best, maybe the best player from my country). I got owned pretty badly. I played some casuals against him afterwards and lost every single match HARD.

Then he beated me using my own main character (Dictator). He also gave me some good tips with Dictator. Some of the stuff he told me I had to answer: yeah, I know this. So basically I need to actually USE that knowledge more, train more so I can do this and that consistantly without even thinking about it. My execution is definately not as good as it should be, and when you’re under pressure (and peer pressure !), you will mess up even more if your execution isn’t too good to begin with.

I have a very long way to go, but who knows maybe some day … and that’s what keeps me going !

I can’t believe no-one posted this one yet:

Who cares about winning or losing when you just start out? Going to a tournament is a real experience, and even though I’ve never done all that hot (best finish over the past few months in SF4 is 30th or so out of 75) it’s still fun as hell to show up and watch really good players.

Just show up a lot, and get to know people. I’ve only been on the scene for a little while, but I recognize a lot of people on SRK as people that I’ve met at meetups and tournaments around the area (HAV, a few posts up, knocked me out of the last tournament I was in!). You’ll never get good playing scrubs online, or friends who just play to have fun. If you want to get good (and not everyone does), get to know the people who are winning tournaments in your area.

Don’t let it get you down, just aim for a little improvement every time. Next time try to not go two and out, then start making your way through winners and eventually you’ll be on top

Where was the tourny held by the way? If you don’t mind me asking.

My first tourney was against a lot of scrubs so I lucked out and place 2nd. My second tourney was against a bunch of the same scrubs, a pretty good Abel player, and a good Gen and Chun player and I placed first. Then I went to my7 first CFN tourney and managed to win my first match and was royally destroyed after that. But my nerves never really got to me until recently when I went up against LI Joe and Lavaheart at CFN. MY hands were shaking and I made some boneheaded moves ( Reg PC instead of EX and C.HK slide instead of RH with Bison) but all in all I left there feeling good about taking one match from each of them. The best way to gauge how good you are is to face the best players and see how well you hold up then make the appropriate changes. It takes time but you’ll definitely get it. Just keep going to tourneys and keep playing to win.

make sure you get early and play casuals, i’ve noticed that my execution is horrible when not playing at home because of the tv’s used in tourney’s have different lag than mine at home. So you’d wanna go early and practice your execution during casuals and adapt quickly.

my first tournament was final round 11 in atlanta,GA.i went to play marvel, and rode down with Eric V,Skisonic, and Havoc, three REALLY good players from my area.i felt kinda eclipsed riding with people who actually HAD a shot at doing well with their games.i remember talking to Hav’,and he said that he had his heart set on top five.

and i remember thinking.i JUST wanna win my first match.i DONT wanna get deuced in my first tourney.of course its my luck that my first tourney was a major…

but anyway,i remember trying to (like alot of tourney goers do) play a couple casuals to get my blood pumping and my brain working, and i got RAPED. then i got to play just at a round of mvc2.THAT went well. but then winners started, and i played this guy named andrew.i remember he picked msp,and i thought…:thats it.im finished.what did i even come for?"…but when the match started,i realized that the guy was about the same skill level,if not only a liiiiittle bit better.luckily i realized this, because i DID not want preppy posting a vid of me getting raped by some average tri-jump setup.we had an EPIC battle,we went 1-1,and then i scraped out a victory by way of playing keepaway with random sentinel fast-fly shorts. not the most prestigious victory, but i was able to call my friends and tell them i hadnt lost my first match.which was my goal.
:china:

You’re story’s a little mixed up.

I rode with you to FR this year… not last year. I don’t know who you think you were talking to, but it wasn’t me

im prreeeeetty sure you rode with us BOTH years.but i COULD be wrong about that part.but i know it was YOU i talked to about placing in CVS2.cuz that was right outside the actual tourney room.i remember cuz you said something along the lines of ‘i’ve been playing this game long enough,i should have my sights set on at least placing,if not winning’…or something.i remember thinking “well shit,im not anywhere NEAR that point yet”… but as far as the ride down,i thought it was both years, but whatev’ youre probably right.

I think you just need a car Goose

I didn’t read any of the posts other than your own Silly Goose, so someone probably said this already. It was a first tournament, those are tournament jitters, most people have them. I know I would especially if I was alone and didn’t know anybody.

Keep going to tournaments, keep losing. You’ll see that in no time you’ll become less nervous, make a lot of great friends, meet a lot of good people and if you’re really dedicated you’ll place better with each tournament.

Good luck.

Also, wkwong is right, a car is clutch.

Is this directed at me? If so then it was KingsGames

And I’m working on the car situation. I’m scared more of insurance prices than the car itself.

That sounds very familiar. Don’t feel so bad. I’m surprised I could hear the game over the sound of my own heart beating at my first tournament.

The only thing that keeps me from going to a tournament is me not getting my execution down to 100% and getting made fun of or something and ending up in a fight over a video game.

perfect taste :lovin:

Yeah. I was just curious since I’m in the NY area.

Nobody is 100% so just go. I’d love to go and I suck, there aren’t that many tournaments around my area.

I doubt a fist fight has ever started at a SF tournament. You should go. Your performance in a tournament is the only thing that actually means something.
