My first tournament I choked so bad I got destroyed by Ryan Hart upwards of 4 times in a survival winner stays on setting. Only been to a handful since there - but you’re all the more capable for the humiliation. When you can rationalize the purpose of strategy, that theres nothing between the game at the tournament and the game you play at home other than the opponent, you can take flight.
I play 100% worse at tournaments. I think its the different enviroment that messes me up. Simple stuff like the tvs, chairs etc. I only play at home between tournaments so im so used to that comfort zone that it fucks me up when I play anywhere else. I play in the same conditions every day, even down to the volume of the tv.
The only tournament I won was the one I played the most casuals at, I played a tonne between matches. Next time im going to play as much casuals as possible to get used to the place. Last time I was doing stupid stuff like jumping forward instead of straight up and I think it was due to do the way the stick was placed on my lap more than nerves.
I dont think anything can prepare you for having someone shouting flowchart in your ear though, lol. Thats pretty harsh.
My first tourney was Capcom UK finals for SF4… I managed to make top 16, but I was so chuffed by the time I got to my opponent for a top 8 spot, that I lost. And I KNOW I could have beaten him.
My point is you should always keep a level head… getting distracted is the easiest way to be peaced out.
my first 2 tournaments i have won them in 1st place.
But ofcourse, im in mexico.
Personally, i play better on tournaments, i do lot of mistakes on casual play, but on tourneys i concentrate more and always think twice.
my first tournament was in Rutgers back in May. There was like 7 or 8 ppl playing, with two other guys having a lot more experience than everyone else. Going in, I was nervous when I came in, but the casuals before the tourney helped out a bit. I ended up getting knocked out second round in losers, but overall it was fun. It sucked that I had to play on pad, tho.
Just be glad that you got that first tournament out of the way. From what I heard, it only gets easier from here.
Think about me. When I went to my first tourney, there was no Street Fighter IV. This game is pretty recent. Everyone has only had so much time to learn the game. My first tourney was a 3s tourney and people easily could have been playing for years and years. I had no idea wtf was going on.
Of course, major east coast peeps have been playing for about a year now. Its okay though. My advice is, keep going to the tourneys, try to get rid of the jitters as soon as possible (Unless it’s EVO, it’s just some local tourney. There will be dozens more). If you get owned 0-2, DO NOT LEAVE. Stick around, watch people play, try to talk to people. Play casuals. Ask people what you did wrong. Learn the game.
I’ve never been to a real tournament but I played In a couple ones at an anime convention. Regardless I was still extremely nervous but managed to win the guilty gear one my first year.
The next year I came back and got beasted by Josh Queen (The doctor) pretty bad
I think the best advice is to just try your best to focus on the match and like other people mentioned headphones help block out the bs.
I am going to Quake Con next weekend and a friend of mine told me his company will be having a mini-Street Fighter 4 tournament. I plan to play so it will be my first taste of competitive SF outside of my house. I don’t have very high expectations, but I think it’ll be fun regardless.
In my first three tournaments, I went 1-2, 0-2, 0-2 respectively. Each time though, I feel like I learn a little bit more, and my confidence goes up, especially when you start playing casuals and people start giving you advice, props, whatnot.
Practice, come back, perform, keep going until you reach the top. Plan truth.
You’ll probably go 1-2 the next time you enter. As you enter more and more tournaments, eventually you’ll face the same guys that beat you. Just be sure to remember them and come back with a gameplan against them.
And it might help to try playing on a different stick once in awhile just in case. It’s just my opinion that ppl should be able to play on whatever stick lol.
