Current thoughts on Soul Stone

**Soul Surge: ** Seems interesting. Definitely the longest ranged attack surge in the game. I assume the frame data may be a bit slow or negative on block for this thing because the reach otherwise is pretty immense. Said that it can be used in combos, but the health regen gets smaller if you use it in combo. Stray hit I believe gives you 5 percent of real/yellow health back. Sounds like a pretty solid surge as it generally can benefit everyone in a way that seems pretty easy to apply. Probably some other issues to this that I’m not initially seeing, but otherwise seems up there with Power and Reality surges for strength in neutral.

A surge that refills life from a long range and builds meter on whiff sounds potentially strong.

Soul Storm: ** Definitely the most involved Storm in the game and technically has 2 types of activations. You can activate while both characters are alive and it doesn’t regain any life for either player. It just activates the MVC1 style duo for your characters and you basically get to fight with 2 characters at the same time. This brings the whole game full circle with how often we’ve already been seeing 4 characters on the screen regularly. If the game allowed both player storms to be active at the same time you’d truly have MVC1 double duos all over again. Which probably isn’t a bad thing since I think it was nearly impossible to play coherent neutral with double duos.

The duo mode seems to work similar to MVC1 where if you move the other charcter moves in the same direction and whatever button you hit the other character will also hit simultaneously. Almost as if your partner becomes a puppet for your character. This will take a long time to optimize as your neutral, pressure and combos will drastically change compared on which character you’re duoing with. Likely not a storm where you can just auto pilot and get exactly what you want. The potential for suffocating pressure is very promising and it’l be very interesting to see how pushblocks work against the duos.

The other big feature of the Storm is that if you use it when a character is dead, it revives that character to 20 percent health. If you activate on half full gauge you only get red health. Meaning they have no real health and any touch will kill them. 75 percent they get 10 percent real health and full stone gauge means they get 20 percent yellow/real health. This is why the characters stay on the floor after death because your character revives at the area of the screen that they died. Not sure how this works if the character is off screen. Another issue said for this revive is that the reviving character has a lot of wind up before they can actually attack. Meaning the opponent is likely free to snipe the character if you activate in a bad spot and set up HBD’s. It’s said that the stone isn’t as easy to raw activate with to break up pressure and start offense as the other ones.

Overall a lot of potential for this stone, but it’s also the most theoretical and volatile depending on how it overall works. If it works out the way it could it could be very tough to kill someone with this stone as they’re just tagging you with health regen surges and then bringing both characters back to life just when you’re finally done with them. Players could also just theoretically tag you with life regens and then not even bother to wait for their character to die. Just pop the stone storm at half full since you don’t get health back unless a character is dead and then just go HAM with pressure. Then go back to tagging them with surges to build more surge meter to use it again.

It’s just there’s also issues with making sure your double characters don’t get HBD’d and the activation doesn’t seem as easy to use and more vulnerable to pressure and the character dying again. Hardest one for me to place, but it has potential. Find out soon enough.

Ghost Rider during time storm will be crazy.

I’m super hyped for Ghost Rider, at first I thought he was lame but now I want people to “endure the suffering of everyone!” because that sounds hellish. The good thing is if the base character is as poor like he was in U3 then at least he’s got a Stone modifier to enhance some of his weaknesses. I actually think GhostRider/Soul could be a lethal combination, he’s already got a chain so the addition of the whip adds one more long range attack to his arsenal where his game is at. Also because he has such great reaching attacks it means he doesn’t have to be maintained as much during duo combos as he can just chill in the back seat and let the chain extend combos for the point character. Also it might make him a really good Infinity battery.

And yeah this will be sick also, I wonder just how fast he can swing that chain!

The new Morrigan perhaps? Time will tell.

Space will be his best stone imo. Some characters won’t be able to hit him at all from the box lmao

Ghost “no mixups” rider

You would want to pester them with some long range stuff then switch to a rushdown character. They’re just going to pushblock negate chip in the box any way

So apparently Thanos’ command grab whiffs on Rocket. Looks like the small size is gonna give him some advantages in the game.

Exactly, this is why I think Soul will be good for him, because if he has a pattern that can keep them out he can always mix in the whip and put them in a frame trap. Obviously there’s so many variables to think about you’ll never know till you play but I think on paper it sounds really good.

They have to fix that

Does the switched character enter from alongside the point character, or from a fixed position on the screen? Because if it’s the latter you might not get any mixups anyway as they might simply switch alongside Ghost Rider and not cover enough distance to get anything going.

I still think GhostRider/Soul will be decent, because during the Storm you could have them in the corner with Ghost Rider at the back, and if at some point you get put into block stun you can still attack by using Ghost Riders inputs instead. Also it will be interesting to see how snipe hypers work, whether they track the point or support character, because if the point character is still in your face a snipe hyper might miss Ghost Rider entirely.

Fingers crossed he’s good in this game because I was never a fan until previously and he looks even more sick and demonic in this game I really want him to be good.

It looked like Rocket was still in hitstun when Thanos did the grab. I think it was just mis-timed.

If they’re in the space box it won’t really matter since the opponent will be trapped and you can just run up to them with pressure. In typical neutral you’ll likely want someone who has really fast dash movement or a teleport. Like Chun Li looks so fast on the ground in the air that she’ll likely be able to follow in after a lot of poking and projectile options from zoners.

I think with tags the character coming in dashes in a bit in front of the tagged out character. Which already gives you some momentum to move in and then just wave/air dash or teleport in.

Ghost Rider is definitely in a better game in this game. The game won’t be dictated as much around TOD’s so he can actually be a zoner that takes hits and doesn’t immediately die. Traditional zoners suck in TOD type games so you had to be a hybrid that can rush like Viper, Morrigan or Magneto to get things done.

Plus all of the zoners will be amazing assists for rushdown characters. Rushdown character paired with zoning character to give the rushdown character a ton of busted assists sounds like a likely early meta.

Distance doesn’t matter. Only the tagged in character is moving during tag freeze.

Oh yeah that’s right the game freezes for 20 frames or so, I forgot about that.

Tags do have about 6 or so frames of recovery on whiff.

On the contrary it does also mean it’s telegraphed.
