well to be fair, art is subjective to the viewer. What one calls artistic the other might call just utter shit.
Rendering and how the artist uses the options and ways to render a 3d environment or model is just another tool of the artist just as a brush or pen or paint or even wacom tablet is.
It’s different in the sense that it’s not just one ‘artist’ that makes a game but they do decide the general direction the art takes.
While all 3d games, its the use of rendering and lighting and how the artists want the world viewed that can make a game feel ‘artistic’ or even a work of art.
its all just rendering of the 3d environment, but how is that any different then rendering a drawing or a painting, refining it to its final state of how you want the viewer to see it.
Do you know how many hours it takes someone to put together a good 3D model? All the geometry, weight mapping, normal mapping (which is essentially done by creating a super-detailed 3D model with millions of polygons), making sure the texture fits nicely (Which also has to be drawn). Then there’s the animating. All of this is done by hand. The good thing is, this can be done by a team of people in tandem.
And they decided on making the game devoid of most of the artistic sensibilities found in Capcom games, sans CFJ. I don’t see how people can play these games for so long and yet not see any of the artistic merit in these games at all then be perfectly fine with 3-D models that look clunky, and don’t animate as well. The idle animation of Dudley in 3s compared to SSF4 is a perfect example of this. I’m not saying that gameplay isn’t important–I’m just saying I don’t see how people can just shrug their shoulders about the art direction in the game as if its not visually jarring to see how less impressive it looks than 3s.
I just don’t get the attitude of art not being important at all. You have to look at the game in order to play it. In the dev blogs the developers even admit to it being difficult to actually embody the liveliness of hand-drawn sprites in the 3d models–Guy being one of the most problematic characters in the 2-D to 3-D transition. Certain things just do not look right in the transition, and you all act like if someone wants a game that looks and plays well that something is wrong with them and that everyone should just settle and be happy that more games are being made. We should still have standards–its as if people just see blobs of color and as long as the colors match up iconically and they recognize the characters thats all that matters and that’s tragic.
Honestly, the models for the new characters in Super do look alot better but at the same time–my problem is how tolerant people are of something that is blatantly a lower quality than previous titles, simply for the sake of getting the game faster and because its “with the times”. 2-D animation is still good and in alot of cases still looks better than most 3-D.
The few exceptions that I think are really strong are Bayonetta, MGS4, RE5, FFXIII, and maybe a few more. I still think 2-D has its place and I just hate that since the American dollar is so important to the industry, companies feel like Americans only want 3-D and are so opposed to 2-D animation and its not the case.
I think 3-D has its place and can be done well–I think it complements 2-D animation in some instances, but I also think that experimentation with 3-D can lead to things that still carry on the things that make 2-D animation work well (animating on 3’s being a prime example). Sanzigen does this pretty well.

I don’t see why these things couldn’t be implemented into SF4 or MVC3. I don’t hate 3-D I just think that it should be done while retaining similar foundational principles to 2-D animation.
I think its important that the BGs retain a hand-painted look as to not disrupt suspension of belief and it still looking “convincingly 2-D” in fruition.
I’m all in favor of 2D and all, but unless they do a weird style like Muramasa or something…I think it’s alright if we get it in 3D. Just not Street Fighter 4 3D.I mean, for the most part the game looks alright but Ryu looks like he descended from a monkey (Not in a Darwin manner, mind you) and you can tell the seams where the models were put together and shit.
Plus it would look kinda goofy seeing Magneto’s eyes bug out whenever you DHC into Storm’s super. =P
I’m pretty sure that the game will not look like Sanzigen and probably will be on one of Capcom’s more powerful engines. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something that was similar to SF4.
How? Unless they are using something like the RE5 engine I don’t see how this is going to happen at all. And even then, how will the game be fast enough to work properly? I only have faith in the visual efforts they put into RE5, Lost Planet, and Monster Hunter.
Because we know America does everything so fucking perfect, right? Yeah–I want Ryu to look like fucking Nathan Drake…-_-
God knows we need another game to look like some generic bald headed space marine expedition, a lameass Uncharted chapter.
Christ.
unnecessary hate on japanese art is unnecessary…because clearly Kinu Nishimura, CRMK, Ikeno, Hideki, and the rest of Capcom are allll just generic fucking animu…
