MoFro: That is very fascinating, because I have been developing a Tron-B/???/Amaterasu-B team over the last two weeks and going through several characters in a process of elimination to figure out who that remaining slot would consist of. I was considering X-23 for it, visualizing a similar strategy to what you proposed… but minus the assist call and with a less efficient approach.
What you propose sounds much more useful and I plan to try it. Thanks for your idea!
I’m reposting this from that Balance/Potential Tiers discussion thread to see if anyone wants to discuss. I’m feeling more and more comfortable with X-23 every day, but does anyone have anything to add to this?
As an X-23 player, I’d say her biggest drawbacks are:
Extremely execution heavy - performing her combos online is not very fun right now, although I’m getting better at it
Her level 3 is her only safe DHC option on block, and only barely (this is a major problem - the only safe tag-out DHC I have for her on my team is a Tron Servbot Surprise into Weapon X Prime, because the giant Lego-man covers her)
Terrible overheads - her air normals have very short range and poor priority. Her easiest aerial approach moves all hit mid (+, Talon Dive L, etc.)
Low health
But she has some very nice advantages:
Insane left/right mix-up potential. Many of her aerial moves can cross up and she has Mirage Feint M that jumps behind the opponent. Combined with a proper lockdown assist this can be very nice. Also, this wrecks people with their backs against the corner
Ability to cancel any ground normal almost instantly for huge frame advantage using Mirage Feint + cancel (either by holding the S button or holding the Mirage Feint input and quickly pressing S). This is some advanced stuff that I’m still having trouble applying in a match, but when used properly it creates extremely safe rush down and you can use it in mix-ups too. I’ll bet you can even use it to create combos that wouldn’t otherwise be possible
Unblockable Level 3 that tears up tag-ins and can be combo’d after hit-confirm with assist help. If you catch an opponent in a lock-down assist like Cold Star you can even activate on reaction and land the strike before they’re out of block stun
High ground mobility using her lightning-quick wavedashes
Some air mobility options using Talon Dives (Talon Dive H is great for crossing the screen)
Very invincible super in Weapon X Prime - Can pass through most beam supers from far away to punish/counter
So I think the jury should still be out on X-23. If I could execute half the things I think about during a match then my X-23 would be pretty good.
Though IMO, her normals are whack, I’m finding Mirage Feinting her sweep to be pretty decent from a good range. You can combo from it afterwards too(a simple magic series or a small loop.)
I’m finding that my X-23 is too predictable, and I rely too much on L Talon Attack to get in, which gets me killed against TaskMaster, Wesker, ect. If I try to wavedash in, I just get tagged by long range normals. And my assists are lacking. Just finding it hard to create opportunities with this character right now, hopefully it’ll come along with time. Online isn’t helping either lol.
Hsien Ko is dead weight, I tried to find things positive about her, but she’s not cutting it. Shoulda listened to that guy with the Dante/Sentinel/X-23 team on here lol. So now I need a third for Chun and X-23. Maybe Dr.Doom or Wesker.
And hsien-ko sucks aside from having a gdlk assist (DR pendulum), she’s just too slow and has no mixups whatsoever, all u can do with her is jump in H+ drones all day till it hits lol
That’s what my friend said haha, use Ammy. I feel Hsien Ko isn’t completely terrible, but online, you can’t afford to use her, along with most characters.
Bro, online is where Hsien-ko SHINES, jump Gong x3 DF mode tag in x-23, with this game’s garbage netcode its IMPOSSIBLE to block x-23 mixups after calling in Hsien, its insaaaaanely cheap.
thats also how i got all my wins in Final Round LOL, only times I lost while using that was random HSFs killing Hsein ;(
Real talk though, without an assist thats visually confusing and crutch like DF pendulum or drones x-23 is really predictable and gets shat on. So much for the “mixup queen” nonsense… but seriously without an assist I cant do shit man its pissing me off.
if anyone has suggestions for opening people up or if you have neat setups/mixups I’d love to know them. the command throw after the OTG ankle slice for example is pretty neat, 10star’s 50/50 in the corner with c.H is hella tight too, so yeah i just neat more stuff in my gameplan.
Yeah, I’m having the same issue, without an assist, I can’t open people up, or I have to take big risks. So I rely on landing combos to kill them off quickly, which doesn’t work online because the netcode is awful lol.
So I’m going for a new plan. Just use resets and make deal with mix-ups after a blocked Talon Dive. And move around lots lol.
Honestly she doesn’t really have any tools that make her unique. Everythign she has other characters have in addition to good normals as well as MORE tools. The only thing she has going for her is raw ground speed.
I find myself using the DHC trick on average about once every 30 games or so. Most of the time I have to pull her out early, or I don’t get that touch I need when I have the bar for it.
I think to really get her mixup game going you have to pair her with an OTG assist. Even though she can self OTG there’s so much lag off that ankle slicer that it’s pretty tough to setup any kind of reasonable vortex. Maybe no one’s putting in the work to explore her options but I can’t think of anything to make her anything other than a meh version of wolverine.
Wut up dudes. I had a friend that i wanted to have use x23 cuz i figured it would fit their play style but if I had realized how little anyone knew about 23 or how weird she is to play I would have definitely just had them pick someone derpeazy like Tron (who also has a ridiculous auto pilot assist).
With that I’ve decided to start using the team I had picked out for them on the side which was Trish with Peekaboo/Trap assist, Felicia with OTG assist and X23 with OTG assist. I feel like X23 and Felicia share similar problems in that their assist aren’t really super powerful without being used to set up for unblockables or 50/50 mix ups and at least Felicia seems to have a bit of trouble getting in. It’s just if Felicia gets in there’s like almost no way to lose because she can open people up very fast and in a way that is more streamlined than X23 seems to be. The same time though at least if anything it seems X23 can get in a bit more easily and has better air options than Felicia.
Basically I have a few things that I wanna ask you guys then.
What do you guys think about my team as far as how it should be used or implemented in certain matchups? If I do stick with this team am I pretty much just best off having Felicia and 23 use OTG assists? I saw a video about how Trish can set up unblockables with her round harvest super then raw tagging in another character to do an overhead while the other assist does a low hitting assist which I think could have some potential.
What do you guys do with X23 to deal with Wesker? I’ve been maining Wesker for a while after hearing how good he was and I liked the synergy he seemed to have with Chun and Doom when Buktooth was playing him. I was trying to give them some tips but I realized the fact that I know absolutely not a whole lot about X23 yet that it would be hard to explain until I learn more. Generally I think its better to just kinda play lame against him and scout his teleports which have recovery. I’ve been using Doom’s beam assist to help protect his ground cross up teleport and create an easier to use safer 50/50 but I know generally people beat my Wesker by just staying patient and knowing that his teleports always leave him in a set place and hitting me then.
I’ve been hearing a lot of people hyping X23 as this character that will eventually be able to kill people in one combo or rape most of their life in one combo like Zero or Magneto. Reading the thread and looking at vids it hasn’t been the case and its more people seem to be hyping it as something “that will” happen. Is it like some of the characters in SFIV where you guys feel something will eventually happen or is the fact that she has no real overhead other than mirage feint H (which is slow to start up) gonna keep her from ever blowing up tourneys?
Lastly at least so far what have you guys been doing with X23 that is working? Any of you guys go to tournaments and have been doing anything at least interesting or that people find really annoying? Any vids of anyone doing anything potentially serious with her in tourneys yet (prob not LOL)?
I think he means the low-hitting roll assist or w/e, either way; x-23’s setups are hella cheesy and gimmicky as fuck so far. havent found anything truly “solid” =/
For question 3), it’s possible for X-23 to TOD characters. Her Weapon X Prime hyper gives her access to the DHC glitch for reset damage so your next character can kill them off(how much you can do depends on your other character really.)
Since X-23’s best loop will carry them pretty much across the whole screen and give her 1 bar of meter lol, it’s achievable. Without the DHC glitch, I know with Chun, X-23 can reach 1,051,900 damage and the whole combo gives you 1 bar even though you’ve spent two. The starter is the loop that’ll give you 1 bar, so you can keep doing it again and again as long as you have 1 bar.
Won’t lie, right now, I’m finding it hard to break people’s guard with X-23. Definitely need to be tricky about how you go about it, since her options are quite risky. I think the key is cancelling your strings with Mirage Feint Cancel, using lots of normal throws and using assists to help cover your command throw set-ups and your mix-ups in general. Still need to work on this though. Trying to fight against characters with good normals is getting on my nerves(characters like Zero, Amaterasu ect.)
For 4) Um, haven’t seen much X-23 play tournament-wise, all of it is early play so nothing much going in them. I think she’s hard to use so it could take a while before anyone sees some success, though apparently, V-Ryu is using her, would love to see how he approaches her. Haven’t been to tournaments yet but when I go on break, I’m planning to go to local Tuesday/Wednesday sessions and tournaments because this game’s netcode is horrid.
I’ll get back to you on Wesker, I need to try something out in training against his teleports…
When i see a wesker teleport i usually fully charge a neck slicer, unless the teleport is gonna go behind you then ull usually tag him and u can cancel to weapon X or rage trigger. It depends on the distance though coz sometimes theyll recover fast enough to do the counter super…
Currently my worst MUs with 23 are magnus, wolverine and tron, those dudes have some serious BS going on.
I think my worst MUs are Magneto, Phoenix, Taskmaster(due to unfamiliarity), Wolverine, Zero and Amaterasu. I can’t tolerate Wolverine, Zero and Amaterasu, I think they’re annoying as fuck to deal with. Tron is starting to jar me as well.
^
Try and super jump over his crap mostly(sometimes try to clear his shots using qcf+M), or call a projectile assist to cover me while I try to wavedash in. Still haven’t really figured out decent methods to combat zoning with X-23, I really need to level up with this char.
^
Lol, someone mentioned that before. For some reason, I can’t get it to ever work.
Anyway, I’ve seen some mix-ups on here, but I think we need more haha. Apart from just dive in with Talon Attack, I don’t have much of a gameplan. And I would post my vids for criticism, but my TV got smashed, my camera is crap and my current TV is too small to record anything from the only angle I can record stuff(really wish this game had replay mode so I could just hold my cam in front of the TV by hand lol.) So I have to wait until I can get my pals with proper recording equipment to upload stuff.
What I can do is post some vids of minor stuff I’ve been working on for you guys to pick apart.
