Hey, probably not the first time this has been asked (although i couldn’t find it under search) but:
“What exactly are the video differences between the three versions of Marvel vs. Capcom 2? (on Dreamcast, Xbox, and PS2).”
I saw it being played for the first time at the last anime convention I was at- on Xbox- and I thought it looked supRemely cool. Due to the rarity now though… I want to make sure I get the best version.
I have a PS2, but not an Xbox or Dreamcast.
I’ve heard the graphics are worse on the PS2 (but does that mean they are worse than the dreamcast version’s?- because I thought Dreamcast was better with 2d fighters, overall- while the Xbox version is supposed to be pretty much a direct port of the Dreamcast version.
I have an HD TV, so which version would look the best, or is the most worth getting? (Because-- I’d spring for a Dreamcast with arcade sticks- or an Xbox… if that game looked better than the PS2 versions.)
Almost the same hardware, with just a touch less RAM. Anything appearing on Naomi is going to have the most accurate home port on Dreamcast thanks to the hardware similarity.
A second vote for the Dreamcast version. It supports the Dreamcast VGA adaptor which will look damned sexy on your HDTV compared to the PS2 low res version. I’m not an Xbox owner but I assume the Xbox game supports 480p like almost every other XBox game out there, but all the same my vote remains with the Dreamcast version for the reasons above.
You can find VGA boxes for the dreamcast on eBay for $10-$20 new. As the Dreamcast spat out native VGA, there is no need for upscanning nor signal converting, which is why these boxes are so cheap, as they are basically just a pin-to-pin connection to a DSUB15 VGA plug.
And while you’re at it, grab an arcade-perfect copy of CvS2 on Dreamcast too.
The only reason it sucks is lag from upscaling low-res inputs. See the very detailed thread about it in the tech forums.
If your input is prescaled there’s no lag, and it’s fine. Hence why I recommended the Dreamcast + VGA box for his HDTV.
Visually, it’s a personal preference argument. I play ALL my fighting games (even the high res 3D ones) on low-res RGB CRT monitors because I like the look of them that way. I personally don’t like playing on plasma/LCD (even the good ones). I find the graphics too sharp/blocky (especially for 2D fighters with scaled up sprites like MvC2). But that doesn’t mean they “suck” for those who prefer them. Each to their own, and all that.
Most tournaments only run arcade and DC versions of the game. If you want the arcade perfect version, go DC. (or Naomi) The other versions are fine, I have the xbox one and its ok but I know the timing is different.
so yeah, basically what all these other guys said.
In his defense, search for too few phrases like “MvC2” or “Marvel” yeilds pages and pages of unrelated character-specific threads. Searching for too many like “MvC2 differences” yeilds almost nothing useful.
Search is a wonderful thing if the item you are searching for is fairly unique. Seeing as this forum breaks down to maybe a dozen diferent games that get discussed with alarming regularity, the search feature is all but useless.
Of course, a working wiki or stickied articles in the tech forum would probably reduce the rate at which these things crop up. A simple “recommended home versions of games” stickied thread (or at least one that lists the versions used at major tournaments, if no-one wants to be bold enough to make recommendations any more) would be very helpful for folks new to the forums and/or scene in general. And lets face it, this community is one that enjoys new blood. It would be nice if reference material was made easily available for them.
Ditto for the Evo forum - just a stickied list of which versions of games are going to be at the upcoming tournament (and if they change during the year, then so be it - that’s life). At least folks will know what to practice up on.
