This is the very common tier list. They actually have Cyclops over Iron Man. But I think when you really look at it the God Tiers (Sent, Storm, Mag, & Cable (& maybe Iron man)) are really good and special in their own way and are the main dominant force in the game. The 1-4/5 ranks mean very little between them. Ppl usually put Sent/Storm above Mags/Cable probably because they can be played in other styles & can work out with many characters without relying on certain assists like Magneto with Psylocke/Sentinel(Rocket Punch)/Tron and Cable with Sentinel(Sentinel Force)/Doom/Commando. Idk what to say about iron man though. Would tearing assholes be God Tier or just Top Tier with Cyclops/BH/Spiral/Strider/Dhalsim.
in the xbl thread i think they went over cyke v iron man matchup.
Sent over storm? idk…
Cable having a sweep unblockable ? lol.
idk if cable has one. i know doctor doom has a sweep unblockable with crouching hk which can be followed up to rocks (The anti air assist) to proton arrays. I think a lot of 3D sweep moves are unblockable. Crossups can be considered unblockables because the character is in the turn around animation. Cable looks too slow to be able to do a crossup. The only unblockable you can get is from an assist. Zangief assist are really hard to do because Cable is slow. Rogue kiss assist is alright and Anakaris throw assist looks pretty good on certain characters if positioned right. Of course Cable has his own throws like everyone else in the game (Except Anakaris (Outside of his special throw)) but he’s too slow to make it happen. Cable just basically throws stuff and waits for the opponent to perform a move and then jumps and does a hyper viper beam to punish it’s lag.
I always thought the top 4 was like Sent, Storm, Mags, Cable/Iron man Debated alot with like Sim, BH, Spiral, and Anak barely below them a fair amount.
I wish I asked Justin when I had the chance why he places it in the order he placed it. I originally had it Sentinel, Storm, Magneto, then Cable. When he told me it was Storm, then Mags, then Ironman, then Sentinel, it shattered alot of beliefs I had. After reexamining them in my head, I can understand why, but only partially. Since then, I’d now place it as Storm, Magneto, Sentinel, and then Ironman, but when the world’s best player says that it’s Storm, then Mags, then Ironman, then Sentinel, that’s what I go with come hell or high water.
You have to look at who Cable beats, and who beats Cable. Does he beat…
-Ironman? I’d say he loses that at least 6-4. Ironman can use Smartbombs and Unibeams to bait you into giving chase, then when you come after him, he starts tri-dashing, mixing you up, puts you in an infinite and 300% combos your team via guard breaking. He can also do things that place him in a normal jump state even without flight at sj height that let him call assists like Doom-b for chip. This is all of course assuming that he doesn’t forget all this like everyone in the world does. If he does, he simply follow you around till you put yourself in a positon to get rushed down and infinited by him [so your whole team dies].
-Storm? No. 7-3. Possibly 8-2
-Sentinel? Maybe. 6-4 favoring Cable at best. Sentinel is also more dominant than Cable is on the whole.
-Magneto? 7-3 at best in Magneto’s favor. The only reason I won’t put higher numbers in Magneto’s favor is because of Magneto’s own assist in Cable’s hands being the bane of his existence in this match. Cable can shoot a Magneto on reaction to eating this every time [no exceptions]. Also, Magneto is extremely unstable, and suicide prone. It’s too easy for Cable to get lucky, vs someone trying to rush him down, and that’s pretty much the only way Magneto can kill anyone.
Even if you allow Cable to be in the top 5, there are other characters like Strider, Spiral, and if Cable doesn’t have Capcom or Cammy, Doom who all either have the advantage over him. In the case of Spiral, [and maybe Strider] Spiral holds an 8-2 at worst match in her favor aginst Cable making even placing him as high as I personally would put him [5th] extremely suspect since many view Strider, Spiral, Strider, and Doom in the top tier, and Cable most likely will lose to them too.
As for Sentinel, Storm and Magneto have 4-6 matches favoring Sentinel. Although I think Sentinel beats Ironman, having a 6-4 match with a character that can death touch you while carrying 1 or less bars, and your death leads to the death of every other team mate is too extreme. In a case like that, an exception can logically be made possibly switching the position of the two. Remember, once someone gets in past Sentinel’s assist calls and limbs with Magneto or Storm, and possibly even Ironman, it’s quite easy for Sentinel to get overwhelmed and die. I wish I had a better answer for why when I asked him he put Sentinel 4th. As a side note, Sentinel, Storm, and Spiral make more characters unplayable than anyone else in the game,
As for Ironman, I found Justin placing him this high confusing too. I guess it’s the endangerment factor, and the fact he has a eally good mix-up game. Furthermore, they’ve leveled up Ironman enough that he only loses to Sentinel by about 4-6. Ironman is like a slightly faster Doom with a more devastating infinite [one that’s almost as good as arcade version Anakaris Curse infinte], and worse assists. He’s slow, but not horribly slow. He’s just barely fast enough to be a problem without the infinite, and to make matters worse, he has one. It’s not one that will kill a character instantly, but tacking a proton cannon onto the end is relatively easy, and will usually fix that. All touches if he’s in unfly lead down into the infinite, and his infinite is a death sentence. If Ironman hits Sentinel out of the air while they both are in unfly, Sentinel could die.
There are also other effects of having IM in the team as well. He’s often coming in off either a frame-cancel, or a killing DHC, and in the perfect situation for a guard break. Tip: People forget that Ironman can standing hp to destroy some projectiles, and cancel that into a unibeam to punish the recovery.
Let’s examine Storm, and why I think she’s the best. In her best teams [Santhrax, Matrix, etc…] she’s paired with Sentinel, the character that ruins the most characters in the game, and supplies one of the 3-4 best assists in the game. That DHC combo for 90% or higher damage to the average character follow-ups included is all. Of course, Storm can also do well in other teams. MSP, and MSS come to mind, OOOPS, Sentinel’s in MSS there too. This is where I’m confused and resenting not asking Justin why, and I’ll probably never get the chance again. Much of what makes Storm truely the best is caused by Sentinel riding her coat-tails. When she has the lead, and it’s big, she can stop fighting, and wait for an opening to kill you, or run out the clock.
Is it true that everytime people argue about tiers any more, kittens die? Seems like pretty solid banding has been established over the years: the only really interesting developments I’ve seen were the low tier tournaments where Juggy, Colossus, and Ruby Heart got a chance to shine.
Don’t forget Cyclops and Strider. Anakaris looks like he has a lot of potential with his curse infinite. His coffin blow move does like 96 hits max. BH is ok despite being very slow, his camping game is ridiculous. Dhalsim is very great with long ranged moves, combos, infinites, flying, teleporting, etc. Spiral has a great chipping game like strider. Cyclops is good at anti air, and punishing moves (Like Cable but more mobile and less dangerous). Would War Machine be considered good? He’s like iron man but with a crappy proton cannon and an extra anti air move. Would Doom be considered just an assist good character like Commando?
Cable is in top 4. smart bombs dont stop SHIT >:( cable/cap or cable/sent pwns iron man, especially rocket punch assist
I went to eventhubs. Here’s their order.
Sentinel [too high, should be 4th]
Storm [too low, should be first]
Magneto [too low, should be second]
Cable [too high, 5th off charaity points]
Cyclops [too high, loses to Spiral. 7th is fine.]
Iron Man [too low, should be 3rd, 4th at worst]
War Machine [Too high, should be in the 3rd group somewhere,
Doctor Doom
Strider
Spiral [too low, should be 6th]
Blackheart [in the right place, but not the right tier]
Psylocke [see Blackheart]
Captain Commando [right place, wrong tier]
Tron Bonne [right place. Bottom of this tier.]
Dhalsim [War Machine belongs here or just below him, right place. Top of next tier]
Anakaris [Right place]
Cammy
Colossus
Gambit
Iceman
Juggernaut
Marrow
Guile
Mega Man (Rockman)
Omega Red

I basically am not going to work any more on this. I’ve already shown enough inaccuracies to prove it near useless, and am too lazy to work on it further.
They don’t have to. They’re to bait you forwards so that IM can sneak in an infinite on you. He’s not using the smart bombs on Cable, he’s using it on someone else. Rocket punch doesn’t delay Ironman enough to matter. All he needs to do is dash forwards, block at the last second, guard push, and creep closer. The guard-pushes are used to drive you back into the corner.
Also note, that although I gave Cable that match narrowly [6-4], that doesn’t guarantee that Cable’s a better character on the whole. If IM touches anyone, the whole team can die. Cable can’t do that unless someone engages a triple [and you shoot that triple with AHVBs]. Furthermore, Ironman’s method of killing is almost meter non-dependent, while Cable’s is meter dependent.
Like I said, the player can simply start Magneto, Storm, Sentinel, kill whovever you’ve got on point using a combo that DHCs in IM, and kills you at the same time. They then guard break you, and you lose the match. Anyways, I have something else I like to do to Cables. It’s called Spiral. Cable doesn’t deserve 4th. There are just too many guys that beat Cable. Giving Cable 5th out of charity isn’t too far away from where you think he belongs. Anyone who loses to Spiral as bad as Cable doesn’t belong in 4th with the possible exception of Magneto.
It’d be amusing to see a Cable try to fight with rocketpunch vs a Hulk with Jin-b and either Doom-b or Storm-y. The match won’t go the way you think it will. I like Cable too, he’s actually my best guy. I just have to accept that he’s just slightly overrated since I know so many ways to dispose of him. Even my Blackheart isn’t afraid of Cable, now that’s sad.
youre not playing good enough cables then. lets set this man up with codigo or smooth assasin
seriously though. rocket punch + tk nade will prevent iron man from doing alot of dumb stuff. also, as long as you dont be a dummy and try to SJ up at him where he WILL ALWAYS WIN THAT TRADE ( >:( ) you dont have much to fear.
IM isn’t using the grenades on Cable, and you’re missing part of the point. IM’s using someone else to Kill your first character via DHCing him in. Then. IM guardbreaks you so Cable doesn’t even get to play or set anything up. Also, I did agree that Cable wins that match [BARELY, might I add] on the whole, but I think that having Cable higher than Ironman is a bit much. That said, Cable’s really good. I think he BARELY deserves 5th. The top 4 IMO stay with the characters Justin Wong told me deserve those positions. A touch from IM kills the whole team, while a touch from Cable MIGHT kill the whole team.
why would cable be anything other than on point, unless youre playing row, and we already saw what happened there, with the best iron man player in the world

I still say Dhalsim should be placed like right below the top 4, that character, even with the bit that’s humanly possible is way to good and slept on. Totally not biased being a BH player.
One thing to keep in mind is that Yipes is literally the 2nd or 3rd best MvC2 player to ever play the game. Justin is first, Yipes is second, Sanford is 3rd, and Duc IMO is 4th. Being the best IM vs any of these isn’t enough. You’d have to literally be as good as these 4, AND be as good with Ironman. There was a clear marked ability in skill and tactical ability that the Josh IMO couldn’t match.
Match 1, Josh kept doing stupid things like blind tags in dangerous situations, and instead of guard breaking, he did something useless. He tried a mix-up instead of taking the guard break for the possible free character. He also blind tagged against Mags and got punished for it. He didn’t attempt a single guard break. He had 2 perfect opportunities.
Match 2 Josh kept dropping opportunities to kill characters, like when he had Sentinel, but he’d already lost the matches to Magneto and Sentinel,
Match 3 he was also self destructing. I don’t even want to go there. It was more of the same.
I do respect your opinion, and now after watching this am close to thinking that, but not close enough. Josh keeps choking too much to change my opinion. You might BARELY be right, and Justin might be wrong though. I just remembered that all the characters that kill Cable for free also kill Ironman for free. That’s why it’s so close. Another factor is that Cable is able to fight Sentinel better than Ironman is. It’s an interesting debate, but I feel like we’ve talked enough about this for now. I think the top tier is 5 characters long, you think it’s 4. To each his own.
Here are some examples of Ironman’s misbehavior using the same Josh360 you like so much.

I agree that he’s slept on hard, but 4th is way too high IMO. That said, if he gets a lead, then there’s alot of characters that cannot do anything to Dhalsim. I do agree that he needs to see more play. He’s got at least 1 answer to almost every character in the game.
I wasn’t saying he’s 4th, but right below them, at like 6th or 8th at worse.
The problem is that Dhalsim is SO slept on that there isn’t enough evidence known to support elevating him into 6th or 8th, while the characters that have been put there by the people here have found evidence to support the positions of those characters. The following characters Spiral, Doom, Cyclops, Strider, Blackheart, Psylocke, and Ironman have all earned their spots. Although I have alot of respect for Dhalsim, I can’t change my mind without solid proof, neither is anyone else here.
Here’s what you need to do. Get out there, level up your game and Dhalsims, and find out if there is enough innovation for the character available that’s unexplored to prove it. Do yourself proud, and make us all eat humble pie you believe we so richly deserve.
