MVC1: Grade for each assist

I decided to do a thread to grade the assists in MVC1. Also, I don’t have huge knowledge on the assists, so I’m only grading on my personal experience so far.

Unknown Soldier
Grade: B
Pros: Good ground coverage, can throw projectile in conjunction with this.
Cons: You can only use 4 times.

Pure and Fur
Grade: C
Pros: Pretty good for people that try to super jump above you .
Cons: Really tough to use, it isn’t all that great. A little difficult to use effectively.

Anita
Grade: B
Pros: Pretty good for Strider, can create a mini trap sort of like strider/doom.
Cons: Kind of slow when it comes out, must use patiently.

Lou
Grade: A+
Pros: Amazing ground control, helps rushdown characters. If it hits up close then you get like 10-12 hits instantly. Counters colossus like nobody’s business.
Cons: None that I know of.

Michelle Heart
Grade: A+
Pros: Amazing ground control, also sometimes comes out in the air which is perfect for anti-air.
Cons: None that I know of.

Arthur
Grade: B
Pros: Good ground control, also can help rushdown characters. You can also use him 8 times.
Cons: A little on the difficult side to use extremely effective.

Saki
Grade: A
Pros: Good quick ground control, her laser is just as effective as Storm’s ground fireball in MVC2.
Cons: None that I know of.

Ton Pooch
Grade: D
Pros: Has good arc on the kick that she does. Can also be used 9 times, which is the most out of everybody.
Cons: One of the worst assists in the game, your better off with other assists.

Devilot
Grade: C
Pros: The only unblockable assist in the game.
Cons: Really only effective for one character, and that’s Strider.

Psylocke
Grade: A
Pros: Really good ground coverage, can stop rushdown. Can setup easy combos if she connects.
Cons: None that I know of.

Iceman
Grade: B+
Pros: Really good against people that super jump above you. Also has decent ground coverage.
Cons: Most effectiveness is off of it being an anti air. Can also only be used like 4 times I believe.

Cyclops
Grade: C
Pros: Pretty good ground coverage, although your better off with saki.
Cons: Most people will see it way ahead of time.

Thor
Grade: C
Pros: Decent ground coverage, does pretty good damage and hits several times.
Cons: It’s really more effective against big characters like Zangief or Hulk due to their size.

Storm
Grade: C
Pros: Can setup aircombos real easily, can catch opponent off guard.
Cons: Really only effective for a couple of characters.

Jubilee
Grade: C
Pros: It’s just a confusing assist really, it does more damage up close.
Cons: It’s really easily to see coming, you can basically super jump every time you see her come out.

Juggernaut
Grade: A
Pros: Great ground control, helps against rushdown. Does very good damage.
Cons: You can only use him 3 times.

Rogue
Grade: B+
Pros: She comes out at an unsuspecting angle, make her a little on the unpredictable side. Also hits several times for decent damage, and you can use her 7 times I believe.
Cons: It’s really tricky to use effectively.

Colossus
Grade: A+
Pros: Amazing assist against rush down, stops wolverine from headstomping you because of the angle that he comes out at. Also does great damage if he connects and can get you plenty of free supers.
Cons: None that I know of.

Magneto
Grade: F
Pros: None that I know of.
Cons: Way too slow to be effective, comes out to predictably.

US Agent
Grade: B
Pros: Pretty good ground control, sets up combos nicely.
Cons: A little slow, and he could be faster.

Sentinel
Grade: A
Pros: Excellent ground coverage, very big and hard to jump away from.
Does good damage.
Cons: None that I know of.

Shadow
Grade: B
Pros: Good ground coverage, hits multiple times. Allows Strider to get a free far reaching bomb drop in.
Cons: Can only use 3 times.

So, there you go. If there’s any other good uses for the assists I mentioned then post some strats for them. Also like I said, this is from my personal experience only. So I don’t know as much as some of you out there.

No respones yet, huh? Looks like I’ll be the first one then.
Lou is just so damn good, everytime I call Lou out right when someone’s Colossus comes out then his arrows just eat him up. Also the only way I’ve ever been countered when I called him out was when the comp’s megaman did a tornado hold as he first came out. Also when you throw lou out and they block then strider can throw out a couple of lions, or could drop a roundhouse bomb or even teleport to their backside. With war machine I just jump up and throw smart bombs out.

Lou, Psylocke and Colossus are the top tier assists. I think Lou is the best assist in the game, and for most characters is the bar none best choice. Psylocke is the only assist that helps on Red Venom, though, and Colossus is a good defensive assist (and helps some characters like Morrigan actually have a shot at doing damage).

Other good assists:
Michelle Heart is good against people who like to superjump a lot, but she’s not as good as she is made out to be. GWM can take her out rather easily with a Shoulder Cannon.
TON POOH IS GOOD. She covers good ground quickly, does good damage in one hit, and you get to use her NINE TIMES. Nothing to sneeze on. Also, Magneto is good for the same reason.
Sentinel sucks. He’s incredibly weak. A jab punch is all it takes to take him out. Shadow also sucks, his startup is painfully slow and you only get three uses.
Rogue is fun for kicks. You can combo rather easily after a connected Rogue hit, and she covers a lot of space.
Devilot isn’t Strider only. After Venom lands an aircombo into Venom Fang in the corner, he can drop Devilot and put the opponent into an option situation.
Unknown Soldier is a nice assist, however you only get to use him four times.
Iceman and Pure & Fur are useful for keeping people out above you. You can combo after P&F if you’re quick.
Jubilee would be much better if she were faster. As it stands, she gets hit out a lot. :frowning:
In general, all the assists are good (except for Anita and the hidden assists), but if you’re playing a match that matters, you have to use the top three.

You can roll after Colossus’ first hit =/

Rogue can guard break people easily after you have killed someone.

US Agent is a pretty good assist too.

this is really good info

I have never seen this thread before! :amazed:

Holy shit, Dasrik posted in this thread… :amazed:

RIP.

Good stuff. I’ve never seen this before either. Some additional thoughts:

Juggernaut is OK, nothing more. The only really nice use I can think of for this assist is that it OTGs. Otherwise you can do much better.

Agreed that Sentinel sucks. Only thing nice about it is vertical coverage. Otherwise, much better off with Collossus.

Shadow is underrated IMO. Very good assist vs War Machine. You only get 3 but you shouldn’t spam it in the first place. It also knocks down, so make the hit count. Possible guard break opportunity after killing the 1st character? That would be nice to test out.

Devilot is also useful with Chun Li. Come to think of it, it can be useful for any character that has a long block string or super that they can make the opponent block. Can accomplish many stupid free damage setups with this assist that the opponent can’t really do much against.

Psylocke is great all around except for how she comes out along the ground and too low for a lot of situations. Otherwise, it’s great. Comes out incredibly fast, juggles well, does good block damage, and long hitstun/blockstun. Useful vs Gold WM.

Lou is my favorite assist in this game. Aside from no vertical coverage and no juggle properties, Lou does more than any other assist and works universally with just about every character in the game. It is the mvc2 Sentinel drone assist of this game. Another overlooked benefit of this assist is that it makes a sweep knockdown safe from jab roll -> punish, making many characters much better than they are without the Lou assist.

im glad no one was po’d bout my necro bump lol.

I actually like going unconventional and picking Devilot, especially cause my team is Strider/whoever. Devilot in the corner is scary.

Lou assist for me is top pick, and i used it long before when everybody was using colossus or psy. I think i started using it by accident, and after killing the first character i would try to call him out and teleport behind with strider or move behind with wolvie, if it hit that was half life off in one combo.

Lately i haven’t been playing much this game, but i might think about playing it on ggpo.
