MVC Infinite Lounge: DLC Characters and Costumes launch Dec 5th

Have we considered the possibility that maybe for the reveal, they just threw a bunch of shit together in a hurry and that the reality is that this game is really earlier in development and may not be released for another year (or longer)?

They already stated the game is in early development when they announced it. So early that the team haven’t decided on a control scheme yet. The thirst for info has to do with the game releasing this year.

Yeah but if it’s that early in development then how is it going to release this year?

The thing is though, that shit has been a strat for a long time. Honestly not even the first time I’ve seen that exact team.

It really feels like in the lull for the last couple of years people just slowly forgot how to handle Jean.

The fact that RyanLV is landing hits with a Chun-Li that essentially has no assists is embarrassing. He’s clearly the best player right now, but everyone else is so bad. He would have to pick a new team if people still bootcamped this game.

Because they’ve been working on it since 2015 and it’s probably coming out at the end of the year.

Maybe. With that particular team RyanLV doesn’t need to approach with Chun, which converts her weakness in offensive pressure to a non-factor. Aside from range and damage Chun isn’t really that bad, and the rest of the team more than makes up for that like a good team comp should. In a way, the meter-gain assist helps Chun more than any neutral assist would because it changes the way the enemy needs to fight her.

On the character/playstyle diversity topic, I’d like to point out that there were just as many distinct playstyles, if not more, in MVC3 as with MVC2. The only difference was that the stronger playstyles would get used 100% of the time in 3 since the high damage and X-Factor made it really unappealing to play any other way. You could play RR as a trap/reset character, but why do that when you can just set up a hard tag combo into someone else who can guarantee the kill? That’s why characters who were restricted in the playstyles they could adopt (e.g. Hsien-Ko) were trash tier.

Rocket isn’t a trapping character, not in the same sense as MorriDoom, or Spiral/Sent, Blackheart/Doom, and Strider/Doom were in MvC2.

Trapping is all about forcing your opponent to block and eat chip, because not blocking results in even more damage. The concept stems all the way back to SFII with Ryu’s corner trap, which was a specific fireball pattern (meaty light fireball, heavy fireball) on knockdown in the corner that kept his opponent blocking or eating a DP if they tried to jump out.

And of course, the point is about viable playstyles, of which there are more in 2 than there are in 3.

My point was that the playstyle diversity in 3 was low due to system mechanic flaws, not character balance. Also Rocket does have a trapping playstyle. I’ve used it myself in a RR/Ammy/Strider team I messed around with years ago. You can chip an opponent to death with his traps and oil bomb and make the enemy too scared to move with vajra and mad hopper. It just takes a long time to get the kill, and like I said before there were options that got the job done faster. Doesn’t mean the trapping style wasn’t viable, just very sub-optimal.

Anyways, this was all just to say that character diversity and playstyle diversity aren’t mutually exclusive. The core system mechanics are what truly affect playstyle diversity.

I think the biggest problem with UMVC3 variety is Doom and Vergil. Doom is an universal assist and Vergil makes people pick 2 characters and stop there. TerryBogard is way more fun to watch than ChrisG.

I agree with Doom being a universal assist even in major events,

Vergil had only a season in UMVC3…

To be fair, the main reason Doom was on every team was two-fold. His assists are ridiculous (when ROCKS is the losing assist, something is up), but it just so happened he was the best TAC Infinite character to boot. If TAC Infinites weren’t a thing, he’d be less universal. Probably only one in every 3 teams instead of every team.

He’s still no MvC2 Sent though, where you could plug it into any team and nearly make it viable. Wasn’t it shoultz who said that you could plug Sentinel into a team of low tiers and he’d get them to top 8 at Evo?

We’re not getting anything until E3, maybe something for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but I doubt it.

As for UMvC3’s character diversity, I think it has fine character diversity. There’s obviously characters that are a bit more dominant but we’ve so many ā€œweirdā€ teams do pretty solid over the years. I don’t remember an Evo where I was like ā€œOh this shit againā€, it’s no MvC2 or especially fucking Melee lmao (same characters AND players every god damn year).

If UMvC3 had the longevity of melee, it really would come down to Zero vs Morrigan. If the game kept getting played and people kept getting better, it would just come down to those two, and the teams built for them.

100 days, wrap your heads around that.

I think Magneto and Vergil point teams would still exist.

So would specialist Dorm and Phoenix teams.

The TOD aspect of the game, along with the absurdity of X-factor, made it so that the viable roster of MVC3 would never get as small as MVC2. Theoretically, Zero is the best character in the game and even Morrigan cant beat one that plays perfectly. Perfect never happens, tho. It’s Mahvel, baybee.

Seeing those green squares is a mad throwback. Good call, whoever thought of it.

back on-topic: The game’s team selection really came down to the TAC system and the Xfactor system, imo. And doom does very well in both of those, along with being a solid solo character, with 3 (ALL OF EM) very different top tier assists. So that’s one of your character slots already decided (unless you want to be a hipster and pick Dante).
Other than that, you have 2 characters who dominate neutral very strongly (Morrigan and Zero), coupled with a few other characters (like Magneto and Viper) who are very versatile and very strong.

then you stick vrgil in at the end as the insurance policy.

It’s sad really that most of the people I’ve seen pick up the game for steam/ps4 tell me their team is X/Doom/Vergil. I remember a time when this game was about discovery, but since TAC infinites became a thing, it really came down to ā€œpick whatever, then Doom because he has the easiest most damaging TAC infinites, then vergil because he’s 100% broken with XF3ā€.

Im rambling. uhhhh, final thought, even with all this considered, there’s still very varied shells to build from the higher tier’d viable characters. Phoenix teams can be constructed in several ways, zero teams in a few different ways too, magneto teams most surely, wolverine teams…

So what was this that Yipes said on a stream about a UMVC3 patch? Someone mentioned it and I never heard of it again.
