But why would you have a system mechanic in place that is not shown by their character? You have to keep in mind that these characters are all established with their unique abilities. Thor or Storm having an air dash makes sense as fly, often at high speeds. Hulk having an air dash however, does not. Captain America’s double jump is based on the fact that he is agile/highly athletic. It’s not a perfect answer but it works aesthetically.
Your argument here is closer to “Why shouldn’t everyone have an air dash?” rather than “Why should everyone have one?”. If the only answer to the second question is “It would be cool/Because they should” then there’s no real need for it.
I like air dashes, but if I want to play a character with an air dash I’ll either pick one of those characters or go and play Blazblue.
If every one is given an air dash, then what is given to traditional air movement characters to make up for the niche/archetype being jacked by everyone in the game? There are many mechanics that are fine to be universal, air mobility in a game where many of the characters are considered “Earthbound” is not one of them imo.
Let’s not go down this rabbithole of character abilities. Chun-Li has an airdash in Marvel 3 when the character never had one in Street Fighter and past Marvel games. My argument is that airdash being a movement option should be universal mechanic and seeing how aerial movement and offense is essential to the way MvC2, MvC3 and TvC played. The arguments I really see against it is people believing Marvel will play like the typical anime game like Guilty Gear and Blazblue if it does.
There was top teir characters in mvc without them , it’s essential to the way some characters play, no all, cable anybody? Sentinel? Where was those air dashes? Where was wolverines? Wesker’s? Virgil’s never used the air dash , fuck KBR been winning shit without air dash in sight?
Characters who fly and are mobile should fly and be mobile characters who are not shouldn’t, that don’t mean they won’t have tools to catch flyers or tools to change air trajectory either
Cyclops and bb hood did have multiple jumps that a weird stuff for them in MVC2. If were talking about their plots and skills when other have moves and combat tecniques beyond the rules of gravity.
UMvC3 actually didn’t have a lot of top tiers with full 8 way airdashing. Doom and Magneto were about it, and Doom wasn’t even able to be that mobile. Other characters like Nova and Dormammu and Phoenix had it as well, but I’d say weren’t the end all be all that MvC2 mobility was. Magneto is pretty much the only one to effectively use his mobility and be top, as many of the others were either limited in their execution, had too many bells and whistles, or were just inferior picks in more matchups/circumstances.
Instead, alternative mobility was better. Teleports from Vergil and Wesker. Dive Kicks and crossups like Zero and Wolverine. Bizarre mobility like Spencer and Morrigan. I expect the trend to continue in MvCI in my opinion
Cyclops does not have an airdash. High tier. Iron Man does. Iron Man is below cyclops. How??
People want to balance the game out of everyone having a similar playstyle. In GG and Vsav what is it? rushdown rushdown rushdown. Keep running forward and run your characters unorthadox rushdown style.
I like the variety that MvC brings. You will never see a more beautiful neutral game anywhere else when you see a Sentinel vs Sentinel, or Sentinel vs Magneto, or Magneto vs Cable.
I don’t think it was better but it definitely gave characters more flavour rather than being just grounded iron fists or she hulk. We see characters like strider or ammy using their specials as a form of movement. Strider had an ADUF or ADF with his Air QCF+ATK, same with ammy. It also doubles up as a for of air dash cancelling your normal which is pretty sick on paper. I just hope they don’t make it too booty like RR rocket skates which is negative on block or hit
You misunderstand. I wasn’t saying the mobility itself was better or superior to traditional 8 way dashing. I’m saying that the ‘special’ mobility was on more prominent characters in the UMvC3 meta.
Nay on universal airdashes. Non-airdashers have dominated Marvel before, and they can do it again.
Something that’s been on my mind. Undoubtedly, this game will have grapplers, yet I can’t think of a single one that was successful within the series. She-Hulk, perhaps, though I don’t know if everyone counts her as a grappler. Who would you consider Marvel’s Archetypal Grappler? What qualities do they need to have a relevant presence? Is that even possible in the Marvel Series?
The problem with universal airdash is how it tends to make the game centered around it. They’re a very power ful tool and most games with them tend to rely on air dashes and instant air dashes as an offensive tool for a good number of the cast.
Generally, the true grappler role was filled by Zangief from XvsSF all the way up to MvC2. In MvC3, Capcom decided to bench the Red Cyclone for Haggar. If you’re talking about a hardcore grappler from the Marvel side, Thor/She-Hulk are the closest we ever got, but Hulk borders between that and a heavy brawler in most games.
Thinking ahead, it might help to look at the reveal cycle for MvC3:

Interestingly, they chose to go with an initial set of Ryu, Mega Man X, Morrigan, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, and Captain America for the reveal weekend this time. The next set will be 2-4 characters, possibly at a major/convention with a playable demo build. Probably won’t be Ultron and Sigma, as villains aren’t often revealed this early. Considering his iconic status within the series and place in the MCU, I think Hulk will be the next Marvel reveal. If Capcom is revealing characters with their rival, I’d expect some kind of big body/grappler to come with Hulk.
My hope is that they still have the same marketing department as they did for MvC3 as MvC3’s prerelease advertisement campaign was as close to absolute perfection as you could get for a FG. A trailer for each character and two gameplay videos during each reveal, a bunch of events to go and play MvC3 in the interim, information flow every month. The Silhouettes, as much as some people like to complain about them, were also great as you had people constantly discussing them.
They need to do everything they did for MvC3 when it comes to advertisement and promotion.
I think Asura will be revealed with Hulk. He’d be a big body character who also has anger issues just like Hulk.
If we get a Capcom grappler this time, I think they’d be revealed with Luke Cage. If Luke gets in, I think he’ll be Marvel’s grappler. Maybe with bits of Colossus thrown in; I always thought Luke could have Colossus’s MvC1 assist if he got in, but obviously there’s no assists this time around.
^I know grapplers are coming, I’m just unsure if there’s ever been a competitive one. My question is what would it take to make grapplers usable in the Marvel series? Haggar doesn’t count. He’s an assist monkey first and a grappler at a distant second.
