Yea and I thought my post was gonna solve the problem.
Yay caches!
Let’s recap the conversation we’ve had.
“Mugen people complaining about people using their material without approval is like hip hop people complaining about musicians sampling their music… in 99% of cases you stole the frames to begin with.”
Terribly analogy of the situation. I corrected it to fit what Michiyo had done.
You disregard. You claim the developer of work based off of copyrighted art has no right to complain about being stolen.
I give examples of copyrighted art being used by others and how it pertains to your view.
My language skills are questioned. You use sprites and concept as a means of disallowing ownership rights, moving away from your original right-to-complain argument. TV announcer gives me things.
Combo videos are compared to MUGEN characters. Shared copyright issues are addressed. Your understanding of the situation is questioned.
Combo videos and characters are too different to be compared. A comparison between my writing and my mental state are reviewed (flattered). You are bored.
Combo videos made using copyrighted images and music. The developer’s nickname is kysg. The video is free. Given praise on shoryuken.com because of its notoriety. If you made a false claim in making the videos, you’d be thoroughly mocked.

A full game made using pre-existing copyrighted Mario sprites. The developer’s name is Ryan “BlazeHedgehog” Bloom. The game is freeware. He was on Attack of the Show because of its notoriety. If you made a false claim in making the game, you’d be thoroughly mocked.
MUGEN characters/stages
A portion of a game made using either pre-existing copyrighted sprites or their own. The portion is freeware. If you made a false claim in making the portion of the game, you’d be praised.
A “game made” by having already-made MUGEN characters/stages installed into the MUGEN engine. The game is freeware. If you make a false claim in making a game, you’d be praised.
I hope there isn’t a rule against posting a certain amount in a short amount of time.
The MPAA is trying to claim movie rentals were illegal for years now. Sony is rumored to have tried to put a writable section on their Blu-Ray discs that would imprint a Playstation 3 game to a specific console to stop rentals and used purchases. Imagine if that passed.
Talk of MUGEN was banned before? When?
I don’t know a single person who would not buy a fighting game because they’ve played MUGEN. The same can be said in reverse to gaining publicity through trying MUGEN in the first place. Do you think MUGEN stole sales from Capcom?
The Les Misrables fighting game used the intellectual property of the novelist that wrote it. The moveset for Police involved Genocide Cutter, Shoryuken, and Hadoken (I haven’t tried anyone else yet). The hitsounds were taken from Capcom games. The only distinguishing point of the game as far as things not being stolen is debatably the sprites seeing as they were hand-drawn. The game, however, wasn’t made for MUGEN. You don’t see them in random compilations nor do you see any failed attempts at self-promotion through releasing them with other character as a part of a game.
Despite the lack of creativity you see in those characters, a considerably amount of work was done to simulate their actions. There’s no “transfer Cable from MvC2 to MUGEN” button. There are creators that go for accuracy. The harder the effort, the more accurate the depiction. There are extra moves or even entirely new movesets given to certain characters. The AI is a simulation of key presses based on opponent reaction, similar to making a combo video with a programmable control on a wider scale. Sprites are drawn/edited to create new moves that their initial sprites wouldn’t allow.
Would you consider Super Mario by R3U stolen? The IP and sounds are used. He retains similar moves from Super Mario 64 and Smash Brothers.
Would you consider Omega Tom Hanks stolen? The creator didn’t get Tom Hanks’ permission. He uses his movie posters as special moves. “Omega” is a mockery of SNK’s Omega Rugal.
Would you consider Babel Sword stolen. The concept was done in Senko no Ronde and the sounds were ripped from Metal Slug and other mech games.
To what degree are you willing to accept certain rip-offs as originals as opposed to the others? How quick are you to toss any acknowledgement to the side because of it? “They stole, so I’m going to steal from them” isn’t the type of response I’d expect to see from shoryuken.com, let alone be defended.
Possible stances as I see them:
I don’t care. Shut up.
MUGEN was abandoned. No threads. They will be locked.
MUGEN creations proven to have no traces of previously-made material without consent are allowed. Bans for any links involving copyrighted material.
MUGEN stuff is allowed, but try to respect the people converting stuff over. Bans for warehouse/compliations/non-direct links.
Stop calling MUGEN compilations yours for recognition. Share characters as you wish. Bans for compilations or whining about warehousing.
Share whatever you want. They stole; We’ll steal from them. They shouldn’t have made anything. Bans for debating this further.
You know those threads that link a video with the topic similar to: “ROTL NEW VIDEO GUY GETS PCUNHED IN TEH FACE.” This is the MUGEN equivalent to that, except with their name added to the credits of the video. Attention-seeking.
This is all I had. If there was another response, I hope someone else saw it
They did that when VHS rental first came out, they are all for DVD rental. The game companies will come around.
Yes, because every copy of Mugen is basically warez since it’s impossible to buy a legal copy.
just because you don?t know them doesn?t mean they don’t exist.
It was written in the 19th century and is therefore public domain and free usable by anyone who wants to use it.
Make your own game, use your own stuff and I?ll have a much higher opinion of it. I?ve never been a fan of Mugen but that Les Mis game somewhat changed my mind because it showed an original, playable game that could be created. But everything I?ve seen since is literally, cutting and pasting work from other games in?
Awesome it was still in the buffer here at work.
Okay, I’ve had my fill.

All further MUGEN crap goes in the No Bullshit thread(char links, “games”, and any and all miscellaneous info).
-
This thread, and all others like this will be closed on sight. If anyone cares to see new releases, they can monitor the main MUGEN thread like everyone else.
-
Any further discussion of the ethics of fanworks of any kind will net you a short term ban(we have a fan-whatever board already, discuss there). Any further posts about what went down in this thread(basically anything between Michiyo and whoever followed him from other boards) will get you banned too. This especailly means you Michiyo, no attempts to celebrate, you didn’t win shit.
-
Michiyo, I suggest you take the advice given to you. Give credit where credit is due, because you’re just as guilty of escalating the situation. There is no “victory” here.
So, thread closed, from now on bring your works to the main MUGEN thread, and it would probably be better for technical questions to be taken to PMs, if it becomes a big enough problem then the creator can post the issue and a fix. Let’s keep this shit organized.
