Mugen 2D fighting game engine

MUGEN is fucking crap for one major reason to me:

Priority value. What the fuck.

The whole thing feels chunky too, like some crappier attempts at SNES fighters.

You’re reffering to it as a full game, when it’s not. Mugen by itself is one thing, and Mugen full games are another.

You’ve gotta remember there are a lot of people creating characters, and each going their own separate route in creation, and accuracy usually doesn’t seem to matter to a lot of people. (Even though the program Artmoney makes it a sinch to gather) :frowning:

Full games are pretty much a good exception to this, as they’re designed for accuracy usually. :karate:

And trust me, damage values are much worse off that priority values, by a longshot.

Im trying to play the dos version of mugen using Windows XP. Ive changed the video values to 640x480 in the mugen.cfg in data folder and have also modified the autoexec. something in system32 folder for sound. It finally starts up but now I get another error when it starts up saying “error message” then it says something about the data/system.def file having an error or something. Now what?

Thx much KFM for all help.

Take a screenshot of the error message with printscreen and give me a link to it (typing out the exact error would suffice also).

I will probably have to see how you’ve got your system.def file. That’s the file that handles things like screenpacks and such, so something probably got mistyped in there. Shouldn’t be a difficult thing to fix at all

The system.def file was real big which would have required a whole mess of snaps. This alone maybe too much. Let me know if you need any other snap specifically.

ChibiPotPie: At the very bottom of your system.def, I see a “|”. Try deleting that and trying it. Other than that, I can’t see any other potential problem. Could you post up your system.def?

The “l” you saw was just the text marker.

Mugen Seems like fun,

I really want to make my own characters.

Is it hard to learn how to use Mugen and make characters??

Hahaha… oops. Didn’t think of that.

The problem was that the .def file was missing a parameter in the [Files] section. Just add “fight = fight.def ;or the name of the current lifebars you are using” below [Files] somewhere and it should work… or you could use the attached file.

CptMunta: Awesome pirate ryu sprite.

The learning curve for MUGEN isn’t very steep. As long as you can manipulate palettes and sprite rip already, it should be very easy.

Now all I need is a good program for converting windows media files to MP3’s for some funky ass stage music!!!

And I can’t get backgrounds to load.

Having a blast though cheers for all the help!

Is it possible to do this? i mean with like 4 human players at once?

I appreciate everyones help but I think its not gonna work for me. Seems like dos and XP dont like each other. I did everything you guys said but when I finally got it to run without errors, the screen went crazy and turned everything to 4 colors. My colors went all 8 bit on me. I tried but I cant figure it out.

Well, XP has horrid DOS support. You can try a DOS emulator instead, like DOS-Box, but I’d imagine you’d need a pretty hefty CPU to be able to run MUGEN there.

hey all, i tried adding music to the engine but when it runs it only plays for about 3 seconds then sounds horribly distorted. anybody know why? what setting do i need to change to actually hear the music on the stages. also on some stages I dl’d it says file not supported for the music, do I have to dl a plug-in or so?

thanks

anyone know what game shinobi and strider hien are from?

Shinobi is from Segas Shinobi,

Strider Hien was a Custom made character. But was Strider 2 for Playstation

for shinobi he was from a fighting game not the side scoller from sega. if you go to mugen nation and go to various characters you will see a shinobi download with a box shot of the PS2 game but the way he plays like a capcom character.

True, He’s a Sprite edit from Samarui Showdown methinks

Mugen Favorites

What are your Mugen Favorites. And I don’t mean a tier list (For obvious reasons). Here are my favorites so far. Maybe this should have it’s own thread if so. I’ll move it.

Shadow Dio, Kicks supreme ass. And is ALOT of fun to play
CVS Chun Li, Very tight copy of Chun Li from Capcom Snk 2
Strider Hien; Very good Sprite editing
Alex, Great to see a SF3 character in the mix
Evil Ryu/Ken, Madly overpowered but alot on nice touches

Wishlist:
Yun,
Urien
(Or Maybe I should just wait for Capcom Fighting Jam)

i downloaded the file for alex but it doesnt work on mine. where did you get your file from?
