Mortal Kombat X where to start

So I just got Mortal Kombat X and I wanted to make a serious effort to improve at it. I tried Mortal Kombat 9 and became frustrated and gave up, same thing happened with street fighter. So im wondering where do I start? Do I just pick a character and watch videos and learn one move at a time? Are there bread and butter combos I need to focus on? I started off picking a Cyromancer SubZero. Im not expecting to become a pro nor do I care to I just want to be able to get online win some matches and have more close matches as time goes on.

I started clicking around on things like frame data and then my head instantly wanted to explode…do I even need to worry about technical stuff like that yet? Also should I be using my standard xbox one controller or is there something I should invest in that will make inputting commands slightly easier?

Sorry if my post seems a bit all over im just looking for a place to start. I tried searching on here and couldnt find much pertaining to the game im choosing to learn and character.

Gonna preface this by saying I’m generally pretty bad at fighting games myself.

The first thing you should do in a new game is play a few different characters, get a feel for them, and then pick the one you like the most to main. Once you have made that choice then you should start practicing their specials and combos until they become second nature, there is no real bread and butter combos in MKX at the moment, it’s brand new so people are forging their own tech. That said you can find some combos videos on youtube, and you should try to copy and practice some of them.

Don’t worry about frame data at this stage, it’s advanced and is not really relevant to the fundamentals. Your controller should be fine, pad seems pretty strong for MKX, at the end of the day it’s personal preference, you could pay an arcade stick or one of these http://www.amazon.com/Mortal-Kombat-Fight-Pad-Xbox-One/dp/B00RYW3FF4, at the end of the day it takes practice to get good with any of these devices, and there’s no definitive answer as to what is the ‘best’ device.

In terms of getting frustrated, that’s a whole other thing. You have to accept that you are bad, and that winning is not something you should play for, instead play for improvement. Try to find someone who is around your skill level or preferably a little higher and practice against them, a lot, and you’ll get better.

BTW, shoryuken doesn’t have a very large Mortal Kombat userbase, try http://www.trmk.org/forums/forum.php

Yeah I can take my losses with stride but im determined to learn some of those badass combos and these fighting games are getting more brutal and beautiful looking I feel that I just have to learn at least one of them haha. I will check that site out. I found this site through a google search and thought it was just a fighting forum in general I didnt realize it favored any particular game. But Ill slide over there and check that out.

Maybe fighting games are just not your thing.

I’m not very inclined to write up a huge text on how you become somewhat competent at MKX when I already read that you quit 2 games before.
If you’re still playing and if you’re halfway serious, I might though.

The question is if you want to get good enough to play with friends, or good enough to play online.

If you’re wanting to get good enough to play with your roommates, congratulations! You’re about five hours playing against the computer, away.

Playing online on something like MKX is basically a suicide mission. Some games are fairly newbie friendly, but MK has never been one of them. I think Tekken and to a lesser extent DOA are about the only ones with steeper learning curves. You have long established franchises, with userbases who have hundreds, if not thousands of hours of experience playing them.
You just can’t expect to close that gap in even a few dozen hours. And getting your ass kicked with little to no hope of winning, hour after hour for 100+ hours is something that won’t appeal to too many people.

So: Good enough to beat cousin Jim and your girlfriend? Yes, simple. Good enough to be ranking up online? It’s not for you, unless you like treating video games like a job.

The competition in MKX online right now is about 80% bad players. I almost never lose and this is the first MK game ive taken seriously since UMK3. It is nowhere near as difficult as tekken or DOA. I also quit several fighting games because i didn’t know what i was doing and i had zero help along the way. It doesn’t take long to start winning against average players on MKX online, because most of the players are average. MKX is one of if not THE most popular fighting game for casual players, and there’s thousands playing online.

This is great practice for someone that’s new. Im teaching 2 of my friends who don’t touch fighters how to play, and they’re winning.

Playing any fighting game online is like a suicide mission, in that you go in knowing you very well may lose. When it comes to fighters, losing and learning are synonymous.

Providing you’re in the right mindset to learn from your losses, if you’re not then you’ll just get frustrated and stop…

  1. pick kung jin
  2. learn his 3 starter bnbs
  3. learn 1 combo
  4. go online
