Mortal Kombat tournaments in the 90's?

I’ve been playing fighting games since I was 9 and Ive followed the tournament scene ever since I saw the living legend Tomo Ohira in the Street Fighter II HF strategy guide. But for as long as I remember, I never heard of any Mortal Kombat tournaments. At least any major ones. My question did Mortal Kombat have a big tournament scene in the 90’s?

Mortal Kombat was big with 3 Ultimate but 4 killed it. That’s when I quit it.
