Well here’s a treat for you guys: Me vs EpicFayle grand finals at a recent local. You may have heard of him as the Thor/Dorm/Doom player who made noise at this past Winter Brawl on stream. Well, we haven’t played in about over a year, so we both weren’t used to each other’s tendencies from the start. I won’t spoil the ending, but afterwards we talked and both agree Thor fights Morrigan really well, Dorm/Doom is a known counter for Morrigan, so really his team is a counterpick to mine. I do think Thor beats Morrigan and I know no one will agree with me without seeing how the matchup works with their own eyes, so consider this a small sample.
We played a ft50 afterwards at a friend’s place, and he ended up winning 50-46, which is where I noticed the problems my team has against his. For one, I can’t do much about him calling missiles. Strider gets bopped and I’d have to be really close for Jam Session to work, so he’s able to freely call it and start his gameplan. With Dante point, I don’t have a fast moving projectile like Wesker’s gun shot or a beam assist that can snipe Missiles. During our set I switched to my old outdated team of Wesker/Deadpool/Hawkeye and although the gameplan isn’t as oppressive as with my other team, I had a lot less trouble with Missiles being somewhat out of the way. Either way, criticize what you see and tell me I should play MorriDoom/Vergil.
Edit: Also, if you want to watch Winner’s finals, its mostly me getting mauled by Wolverine then winning because of an impossible comeback on the last game with Strider. 1st game got chopped off, so it starts 1-0 me.
i actually think that’s why morrigan jam and/or morrigan vajra aren’t as good as morrigan missiles lol. has a harder time vs stuff like dormammu, missiles, vergil, etc.
vs a team like thor missiles though you just gotta run 100% of the time. no real point in attacking. vs missiles + a char that can’t really catch morrigan, you can be cute and threaten soul drains vs the missiles call but not much else. just get your meter, pop av safely, do some chip.
vs dormammu you have to outplay the other guy really.

But thats the thing, I can’t really stay away the whole match. One of Thor’s might spark (his beam) eats up 2 soulfists, and while he’s doing this, he can freely call missiles. The hitbox for mighty is like a medium sphere around his hammer, then a forward beam (kinda like a kamehameha) which also protects his missiles when he’s next to doom. I was thinking of running missiles of my own, but mighty spark can snipe mine, I can’t his. Also when you saw, when I did activate Astral Vision, he flew up at the top of the screen and stalled there with mighty spark (which smacked vajra out of the air clearn ughhh). Even if I jump up and smack him with 3 or 4, not enough to warrant the meter spent especially considering the health he has.
Watching those matches really exposes why Morrigan does badly against teams that use missiles against her. You need to have some sort of way to punish assist calls, like Plasma Beam or Disruptor.
When Thor stalled, he wasn’t dashing or anything he was just staying put (IIRC). Perfecting Jam Session calls to force him block and fall into the corner will give you a chance to get a mixup in. Then at least having some sort of TAC infinite to go into will let you kill off of one touch, no more having to do 3 combos to kill. I think the issue is the fact that if you are not using Vergil on anchor you need to have multiple teams to deal with counter-picks. Perhaps trying Morrigan/Doom/Dante or Morrigan/Magneto/Dante would help you out, gives you a beam and a TAC infinite.
Also, I’m no Dante expert since I just started playing him seriously a month ago, but couldn’t your XF combos be better? I didn’t see you use Air Raid at all in them, and you had to still reset them. Also, I think you should look into using Crystal more, I don’t think you used it and it’s a really nice tool to use if you predict they’ll tridash in attacking. Fun matches to watch, I’m glad you post up all your gameplay.
yeah thor and ironman can stall out AV pretty efficiently, but not infinitely - it may not feel worth it, but your best bet is to wait till he comes down, then make him take fireballs+jam+hopefully a high low mixup. definitely not a fun matchup for morrigan.
the thing is that thor shouldn’t be able to force anything on morrigan in return; even if he gets out missiles, thor isn’t fast enough to abuse it. morrigan can outspeed missiles and thor, while still putting a fireball on the screen before she goes into flight.
dormammu on the other hand actually has chances to harass morrigan when he gets set up.
Thor can easily establish his own missiles in this match while counter calling yours with his beam. If you try vajra instead, he anti airs that with his beam and mighty tornado. If you get AV started, he has a ton of health and a very strong way to avoid chip. When you struggle to chip him out, you’ll find that approaching him is very difficult as well. Thor’s backdash is insane and he can move back faster than you can move forward. When you try to use a soul fist as cover for your approach, thor can just mighty strike right through it. Very few thors know how to play the matchup properly though.
Hello fellow Morrigan players! I recently picked her up - went from Viper/Dante/Strider to Viper/Morrigan/Dante. I’m on about week 1 of practice with her, and just got a little stream set up. I’d like some critique of my play - I really need to work on my execution, but I’d like some feedback on the decision making and thought process. I’ll tend to stream around 12:00 am pacific, and am about to get a session with a friend started.

Now why is it taking me forever to find something like this for Jam Session

jam session comes out too fast and its hitstun doesn’t last as long as rapid slash for it to be as useful for these combos. you’ll still be able to fit in drains, just less of them.
on the other hand, rapid slash assist combos are pretty corner specific.

Hey guys I’ve been watching Darchon’s bids trying to learn Morrigan, very useful and informative but I can’t get the timing or spacing for her bnb. The part I’m having trouble with is the down air dash H after the the heavy soul fist. Any other tutorial vids anyone know of? Thanks a lot!
