Modding the Hori Fighting Stick 3

So I got my parts today and got a rude shock to find I got a generic wire harness. The description didn’t really say it was Sanwa harness and it was included free with the joystick so I can’t complain.

Just want to know if I will run into any trouble using this:

where did you order your parts from?
I ordered a seimitsu 5 pin cable instead of the jlf h cable.

can someone suggest what wattage soldering iron i should use? What’s hot enough but not too hot?
I’m about to head out and buy my soldering iron, dremel, cables and solder sucker. Thanks.

Does it fit the joystick correctly? You got a JLF, correct? Cross reference these two pics and you should be able to wire it up. Remember the joystick activates the microswitch opposite of the side you push the input to.

I can tell you what I’m using.

15 watt Soldering Iron
Solder
Desolder bulb
Desoldering Braid
Rosin Flux
24 AWG Wire
Soldering Iron Stand
Helping hand with Magnifier
I’ve got a multimeter I picked up from Wal-Mart

I’d suggest ordering as many supplies online as you can. I know I probably ended up spending way too much getting a bunch of stuff at Radio Shack, but one is on the way home from work so it was convenient.

I have a JLF-TP-8T, the connector I got fits perfectly even if I flip it. So I’m guessing I can use this but I have to figure out how the colours go I guess.

huey: I got my parts from a local supplier in Australia as it was faster to get it there.

This is a quote form lizardlick where I got that pic form (emphasis mine).

Thanks must have the old harness then.

So I see you guys keep saying to use a low wattage soldering tool. The only one i have available to me is a 60w that is at work. I have a co-worker who is going to do all of the soldering for me because he uses the thing everyday for his job. Could this possibly be a risky decision even though he is very experienced with the thing?

Thanks dude. I ended up getting:

 • 20w soldering iron (with this red boost button that amps the thing up to 130w LOL). So I guess I’ll be keeping my thumb off of that red button. It also came with desoldering sucker, soldering tip cleaner and a 10cm’ish long tube of solder (hope that’s enough)
 • 26 AWG hookup wires (colour coded so I could match the colours of the buttons (for layout purposes) to the PCB - Will these wires be okay for the job?
 • 40 piece rotary tool with sanding/grinding/buffing/cutting attachments
 • cable-ties, self adhesive cable-tie hangers, insulator tape.

Will these be sufficient for the job? (Still waiting on my parts from akihabarashop).

Well I haven’t actually finished the job yet, and it’ll apparently take a while for my Lizard Lick order to come in, but it seems like that’ll be most all you need.

Yeah same here. I don’t think akihabarashop.jp are going to ship my order until Friday.
Oh well, I guess it gives me time to go over this thread a couple of times, to get my head around what I need to do exactly.

I cant really figure this out
Can someone link a video on how to mod the stick

I doubt you’re gonna be able to find a step by step video on how to mod the stick. I think the only way youre gonna learn how to do it is to ask questions, read the thread, and do it yourself. If you read the info thats already been provided in the thread I think you’ll be fine.

Yo i found this video on youtube on how to mod your stick i think its going to be a 4 part video. i saw 3 parts and from what i saw it really helped. If your lookin for a visual view you should check this out its called modding a wii hori stick with sanwa parts.

peace

Hey guys, I’ve been going over a number of the posts in this thread as well as other tutorials (Fighting stick Wii mods etc) and have noticed that the thickness of the wires used is different to those that I purchased recently for this mod.

http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/49b86e2b104a4e1e2740c0a87e01067f/Product/View/W4010 - Can someone please tell me if these wires will be fine? or are they too thin? Thanks.

Yeah I saw this too - just finished watching part 3.

Link please?

Hi, I’m sorry to hijack the thread, but I don’t know if this warrants a whole new topic.

I want to get a Hori Fight Stick 3, but I live in Venezuela and most of the time the company that ships packages from USA has little care when handling them. My question is, will the little cardboard thingy that protects the stick when it’s boxed () be enough so that it doesn’t break when it’s being shipped here?

If it breaks, can it be replaced easily by someone with no experience whatsoever in tinkering with stuff like this? I want to keep it just like it came and am not really interested in modding it unless I have to replace the stick.

So I decided to make a blog to try my best to document my process. Tell me what you guys think. =]
Anything I need to add, credit I need to give and forgot to do so, anything at all, just leave your criticisms/complements in the comments.
Thanks in advance.
