Modding a Mayflash stick (finished! 1/18/2009)

Love the stick art potato, was going to do one of those for my Redoctane case but cant find a template for it, did you make it yourself from scratch?

Actually, I’ve done a test print of your template. I could be wrong but my experience with your copy of the layout was slightly off. All the buttons are aligned properly but the joystick is slightly off.

Isn’t a big problem if you plan on the dust washer to cover the artwork.

I got the Mayflash template from this thread on OzHadou (http://www.ozhadou.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3614), not sure from whom, but seems to be similar to the one circulated around. But out of the one’s I’ve tried, seems that all of them turns out larger and holes misaligned. Bakashi had to resize my template art, with the cutting of the outlines/holes for the buttons, stick done free hand which he did a spectacular job on.

Thanks! Got the MVS layout from http://www.neogeomvs.com/. Just a matter of Photoshop magic to fit the Mayflash template. Let me know if you want the Mayflash template (though big size).

The link in that OzHadou Thread is the same exact one on SRK.

Even X-fade on OzHadou is here.
Laugh.

mR_CaESaR said the Template came out perfect though:

So how come not yours potato.xbe?
I read from others that it came out perfect fit too.

Can someone please turn this Hellboy picture into a template?

loving that mvs-flash. that looks super clean!

bakashi, did you make that replacement top plate yourself? looks good, and i like the button layout. only thing i would suggest is to put those two extra top plate buttons on the side of the case. way too easy to hit them when mashing.

Yeah when i printed it on A4 paper it was perfect, but when i printed on an 8x10 at 300dpi… for whatever reason, it seemed a bit off… we’ll see in the next week or so, i’ve gotten some acrylic made out using the template from this thread…

fingers crossed…

My maylash mod is almost done, it’ll be a 6 button layout (last 6 buttons), all OBSF-30’s (maybe Ns depending on how thick the plexi will be), Sanwa JLF stick and OBSF-24’s for the start and select at the back (like the way the TE stick is).

bakashi: how did you manage to fix the stick to the metal plate ? I can’t see any bolts

They’re probably countersunk into the plastic underneath the metal, or he’s using the JLF which doesn’t require you to screw through the top.

The Template when converted to Inches from 300 DPI be:
Width - 3071 300 = 10.24 inches.
Length - 2362 300 = 7.87 inches.

So it looks like an 8 x 10in paper is slightly smaller, causing the Template to be off when print.
A4 is 210 297mm, that is 8.27 11.69in, so it would have room for Template when print.

Makes sense you see now mR_caESaR?

Yap. 1 piece aluminum plate, hole saw, dremel & my pair of hands.
I dun mash during games, kick that habit, so the 2 buttons on top are ok with me.

<— He is right!!!

Ah but I didn’t know there was someting below the metal plate !

Here it is, ready for download.

Just print out the PDF; it’s perfectly sized. It’s not the best image for a Mayflash since you have to be sort of picky due to the four small buttons across the top of the stick.

Well, what i get from reading through this is that i would want to mod my Mayflash when it arrives no? I am pure scrub when it comes to modding so i’ll be reading up on all this sites got to offer =P. Im going to make this my first venture haha!

But before that…

Joysticks, buttons, and the issue of remapping them for PS3 as stated by AJtheMishma.

From what i read the mappings on the Mayflash is strange, i wouldnt know the first thing about it yet. As to remapping it, i would appreciate it if you could walk me in the right directions when the time comes AJ ^_^.

** L1 BL BU R1 aparrently thats how its setup. so im guessing 3x punch/kick are L1/L2??
L2 BD BR R2**

On another note, im currently browsing LizardLick and im stumped on what i should be purchasing for the mods…

For Joystick im sitting on a
"Sanwa JLF-TP-8T Ball Handle Joystick, 4 & 8-Way Adjustable"
which is their base model, and form what i read requires soldering and the likes.
Which particular stick did you modders drop into this board?

As for buttons, im reading that the mayflash is 28mm, while LL is supplying 30mm, 24mm, 20mm, and 18mm… Snap-in or threaded? which would be easier to work with with 0 modding experience?

After bouncing around it just might be simpler to widen the drops to 30mm… hmm

Onto the next note, i also noticed that some are advocating Quick disconnects over solders, and its description is 18-22 AWG, with insulated crimp sleeve. Available in .110", .187", and .250". What should i be looking for in the event that i will want to be using these?

Looks like soldering is a must in this board, after looking over the tutorial on the board specs, seems like a tight space there. anyone? Not to mention the poster reduced it from 8 to 6 buttons… im confused

Fowarding on…
If i want a *Toodles Cthulhu PC/PS3 Board *, that requires no soldering, and is $40… Lol.

Mark up so far would be…

$40 Mayflash Stick (S+H included), $40Cthulhu PC/PS3 Board, $30 Sanwa JLF-TP-8T Ball Handle Joystick, $18 Sanwa 30mm Buttons, $5 Sanwa 18mm or 20mm for Start Select, Handfull of quick disconnects, id have to guess around $2 worth… and a hell lot of time and patience.

So… 40+40+30+18+5+2 = $135 would be what the expected shell out is right? Almost as much as buying a TE stick… heh…
That or…
Solder option would go 40+30+18+2 = $90 total.

Pretty much that 40 dollars is for the Case and PCB. right?

Now i just need to find the tools for free. time to ask around heh.

lastly, if i happen to find what i want to know ill just edit this post to save the reading =P thanks in advance.

You don’t necessarily need a Mounting Plate with the Sanwa JLF.
So one without is okay; JLF-TP-8, JLF-TP-8Y, JLF-TP-8-SK, JLF-TP-8Y-SK.

But sure, if you want Flat Mounting Plate; JLF-TP-8T, JLF-TP-8YT, JLF-TP-8T-SK, JLF-TP-8YT-SK.
S Mounting Plate work too? JLF-TP-8S, JLF-TP-8S-SK.
All JLF are the same anyways.

Oh yes, I forgot; get Wire Harness too; Sanwa JLF-H.

Happ Buttons use 1.125" holes.
Crown Buttons (Korean) use 28mm (1.102") holes.

If you are cool with making the holes on Mayflash Case bigger, then 30mm Sanwa or Seimitsu Buttons are go.
For those four small holes on top, you can use the 18mm Buttons.

Japanese (Sanwa and Seimitsu) Buttons, you will use .110" Quick Disconnect.
Happ Buttons will use .187" Quick Disconnect.

Nice, so if i dont want to hole punch anything, just get korean buttons right?

Lizard Licks doesnt seem to have them or im just not paying attention, ill look through it again.
BTW do the Crowns use Quick disconnects as well? Im really thinking about tossing the stock PCB and shelling out the extra $50 for the Cthulu board but thats only because i still havent found anyone with a solder kit. My neighbor does woodworking for a living but hes too busy with his own works =P

The wire Harness doesnt come default with the JLF-TP-8T ?

heh… i just got crapped on. literally

http://www.coinopexpress.com/products/parts/push_button/Sanwa_Push_Button_28mm_(OBSF-24)_2196.html

Sanwa 28mm Pushbuttons. sold in bulk only $200 up. sigh.

If you buy Sanwa JLF-TP-8T from Lizard Lick, then Wire Harness include.
Some Sellers sell separately from Joystick.

You are right to not see any Crown Buttons on Lizard Lick.

Crowns are pretty different:

Crown CWB 203 A (Snap-in)

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/1179/dsc0328gz1.jpg

Crown CWB 203 C (Screw-in)

As you can see, the CWB 203 A has different prongs from Sanwa and Seimitsu.
Check out closer:

CWB 203 C different from Sanwa and Seimitsu also.
The Buttons have PCB.

You can purchase Crown Buttons from SRK Member; laugh.

No you did not.
Not worry.

Those are Sanwa OBSF-24.
Coinop Express lists them as 28mm, meaning the diameter of the Button Rim.

The Buttons need 24mm hole.
(That is what the Number 24 in “OBSF-24” mean.)
So you won’t be able to use those.

When we talk about Buttons, and say 30mm or 24mm and what not, we are talking about mounting holes.
So going along with that, Sanwa does not make 28mm Buttons, neither does Seimitsu.
