MLG Stream Sets a Dangerous Precedent

Christ you just infest threads every time it needs a devil’s advocate point of view, don’t you?

Let me qoute myself.

Ignore his post, this thread is looking hella good right now, great discussions. Good post in here. He"ll spark up some bullshit an fuck it up.

Since you feel the need to make it about me, you’d have to notice that up to yesterday I hadn’t posted at all for the last several weeks, so not particularly… although given the immediate over-the-top hostility from the usual suspects, I don’t think people even notice.

The 2 subjects of this thread just happen to be things that get me going and that I like to talk about.

Specifically, the esports thing is in the end a stupid power-struggle over control of something that’s already fait accompli, and the mythologizing of the oldschool isn’t only stupid as fuck, it’s actively toxic to the community.

Those are my actual positions… well to be honest, they’re substantially toned down so I don’t get myself into trouble with the mods.

Thank you for this post. I for one will be bringing it back to basics. Starting with EVO.

MLG plans their stuff out way the fuck in advance.

How about you go fucking play video games instead, or go to a tournament or something.

I think you’d contribute alot more that way. You know, by enjoying playing against other people. Maybe.

I just wanted to post saying that HAV is the realest nigga in this conversation.

That is all.

The place to start is really at the local level though.

Like it or not, Evo is what it is, and is only going to go further along the same path.

To me always the great times will be when the local arcade was the place to go, and it wasn’t even about repping anything except for yourself. Get to the top of your pile, maybe occasionally go out of your space (easier in the old days when you could just go to the arcade across town).

This is something that can be recaptured with locals. No major will be what they were when the scene was tiny, not unless a good part of the community quits again. The flip side is that now we have weekly events that have the turnout equivalent to what tourneys used to be. It has all the spark and competitiveness that people love without the corporate bullshit that people hate.

The old arcade culture isn’t at Evo, if it’s anywhere, it’s wherever the people in your city get together to compete with each other.

Why in God’s name would you think I don’t?

per my post just above, that’s what it’ll always be about to me. The only truly important thing in the fighting game community is getting out and playing games. The rest of this stuff can be interesting and fun to discuss, but it’s really inconsequential bullshit.

They have FPS, RTS, MOBA communities , and large venue’s availability to take in consideration. Sundance did mention some Cities are in a bidding war to having MLG’s hosted in there cities. Providence, Rhode island, The Mayor declared one day MLG day.

One of the most interesting threads I’ve seen in awhile. I’ve been around more or less as long as HAV and don’t agree with certain parts of his position, but those are the ones only tangentially related to this thread so I don’t want to start a huge derail.

Just want to add a couple points here:

  • re: the complaints about lack of hunger, isn’t the dumbed-down nature of modern Capcom games a big factor here? I’ve noticed a lot of this on the east coast, where the scene is a lot less Hollywood (so probably less incentive for new blood to stick around and get good). Think of Arturo’s SSF4 speech after losing to KDZ at the Break, Yipes’s sarcastic jabs at MvC3, Sanford’s various rants, etc. Bum called out a number of people like Yipes for not coming to his place to practice UMvC3…but why would anyone’s heart be in that game if they know what a real fighting game is like? West coast tends to bring in a lot more people who don’t know better, it seems…Filipino Champ was trying ST at one tourney and complaining about how the game sucked because “I can’t even do a DP!”

  • I would actually argue that this lack of desire to be the best started with MvC2 and its money match craze. The whole thing began back when Justin and Sanford were guaranteed top 2 in any tournament, as some other players saw them as unbeatable and wanted a different way to make themselves famous. Hell, one of the Cannons even made a FGD thread calling them out on this, and I recall Valle frequently doing the same. It’s not exactly the same thing as Juicebox’s dancing, but it’s not hard to see how this would be a first step toward that.

lack of hunger I always attribute to the fact that you’re not out anything real to play anymore.

If you have a buck fifty and can only play until you run out of cash, losing is a LOT less acceptable.

Oh dear god that’s hilarious. I like FChamp but still

He must derive some sick, disgusting pleasure from doing this. Other than being an annoying old geezer, what other reasons does he have?

We’re all here because we get pleasure from it :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d hope that nobody is posting on a forum, loathing every single moment of the experience.

he is one of these persons who faps at the sound of his own voice

Looks like everyone has said what they’ve wanted to say in this thread and we’re down to taking pot shots at one another. Closed.
