MLB (Baseball) 2009 (including fantasy leagues)

I miss team Japan bullpen.

I still wear my authentic Kazuhiro Sasaki jersey. That guy was SICK.

Actually, I’m kind of glad I don’t live in Seattle/Washington.

You guys have some serious issues, sportswise.

Shouldn’t you be over in the NHL thread?

P.S the Blue Jays going to start sucking. Like they should be.

I’m so happy. Yankees are winning but I don’t have to hear anything about Alex Rodriguez. Can’t get better than this

Maple Leafs got relegated to the AHL, so he no longer posts there.

Pirates trade McLouth to the Braves for prospects. Why does this horrid franchise still exist?

The Clippers and Lions are worst.

Wow. It’s like…Hey, check it. We lucked into a really good player, and he’s cheap for a few years. Let’s trade him. Imagine if they were willing to spend some money, what they’d have right now.

I just don’t understand the logic. I’m not a baseball GM or anything, but really, why do they torture their fans like this? It’s almost as if they TRY not to win on purpose. They trade away ANYBODY that’s remotely good, don’t understand the logic behind it…

The Pirates farms system is apparently a barren wasteland.

The new GM has the intentions of actually building from the bottom up over a long term period of time.

As a small market team, they have to win with homegrown talent. You can’t grown talent when you don’t have any in your minor league system to develop.

I’m not defending the Pirates for trading this person who I know nothing about, but this is the plan I read about in an ESPN the magazine article.

Apparently this is the guy implementing it.

You have to give credit to the new management that they are indeed very committed to fixing the team from the farm up, and are wasting absolutely no time to do it.

Still, the timing of this move is so odd…I don’t understand why you wouldn’t wait closer to the deadline, unless they were worried that McLouth wasn’t going to break out of his slump any time soon or something…? More teams would be looking to add another outfielder closer to the trade deadline, and if teams like the Mets or the Clubs got into the mix, they’d drive the price of McLouth up.

Great deal for Braves now, obviously.

Pretty solid haul for the Pirates - Jeff Locke and Charlie Morton immediately come in as maybe their best two pitching prospects, and are supposed to be major league ready. For a team that is so absolutely devoid of pitching like the Pirates, it’s not a bad return.

You’d just think that McLouth - a solid player that’s signed so cheap for so long - is the exact type of player you’d trade FOR, to keep and build around. I mean, why not just wait closer to the deadline when teams like the Mets get more desperate?

Pirates didn’t get enough for McLouth. They got the Braves 4th, 5th, and 6th ranked prospects.

McLouth, while he?d probably be better off in LF, is signed through 2011 with a 2012 team controlled option. He?ll cost the balance of $2 million this year, $4.5 million in 2010, $6.5 million in 2011 and $10.65 million in 2012 or receive a $1.25 million buy-out. He?s 27 years old and has posted an OPS over .800 the last 3 seasons. Fairly cheap.

And what do the Pirates get in return for a pretty damn good player?

Gorkys Hernendez, a fine defensive CF but a weak bat. A contact hitter with very little power. A speedster who went from attempting 65 steals in 2007 to 24 attempts last year, and is 10/18 in attempts in 2009.

Charlie Morton is a 3rd/4th SP maybe. He’s 25, so he’s gotta start producing soon. EDIT: He is, however, having a very good season in AAA thus far. He was called up last year and got rocked.

Locke is an A-ball lefty with solid-to-good stuff but bad results thus far.

Braves also called up Hanson, guys got sick stuff. In 11 starts for AAA, he posted a 1.49 ERA with an incredible 90 strikeouts against just 17 walks in 66 1/3 innings.

Also, the White Sox called up IF Gordon Beckham, he has the potential to be a superstar. He has batted .326 with, 23 doubles, 4 homers and 25 RBIs in 45 games at AA and AAA this season, while being somewhat slowed with a rib injury.

Clippers 3 consecutive losing seasons
Lions 8 consecutive losing seasons
Pirates 16 consecutive losing seasons

Every other team in MLB has at least 1 winning season since the last time the Pirates had one. With trades like this I can see why. They gave up an all-star player for 2 mediocre pitching prospects and a mediocre hitting prospect. Even the general manager acknowledged it as such trading a star for 3 guys who have “the potential to be above average”.

Thanks for the Hanson heads up. Picked him up in the keeper league.

imo.

Damn, I regret not trying to get in the keeper league :<

Congratulations Randy Johnson. #300, he’ll be the last one to join that club for awhile.

EDIT: Welcome B.J. Upton to the baseball season. Better late than never.

imo.

It’s going to be a VERY long time until we see another 300 game winner if ever. Yay RJ, doing it in a Giants uni!

It’ll be awhile but it’s definitely possible. It just takes a pitcher staying healthy and being decent-great in their later years.

Jamie Moyer’s at 250 something wins. He has an outside chance at 300 wins.

2.1 IP 0 Hits 5 Runs 5 Earned Runs 5 Walks 3 Ks

D-Train continuing the lols.

imo.

Nah, he’s too old. It’s okay though, he got his ring with his home town team.
