It would be great to see the next MK game blow everyone away with a big re-birth on the scale that MK:DA was for the series (but also become a legit good fighting game), but I doubt it very much…
Fixed for immutable truth.
So by “gold standard for network play” they mean “even more glitches and infinites than offline than ever before”? I believe them.
Itagaki may be trollish at times for his public hating of rival franchises, but I atleast gotta credit him more than Boon. The DOA games have some modicum of value as fighting games and his team is responsible of some of the best boob physics ever computed in 3D.
Also MK girls in-game are always rendered fugly. What’s up with that?
And never forget, any of the endings to MK4. Just pick one. They’re all gold.
edit:
I thought Ed Boon no longer is the project leader/game designer for MK. That’s the only way the new MK will even be as good as the older ones.
Maybe if Ed Boon would stop humping Scorpion long enough, he’d realize the outlandish disparity between how much work is put into the gameplay vs the presentation. Deception was probably the worst offender in this regard. They concentrated more on how people fell and died in those fucking deathtraps than actually fixing the gameplay. Maybe if they hadn’t wasted all of those precious resources on an ungodly long and painful Konquest mode and ripping off Puzzle Fighter and Archon they could have tweaked the engine and found everything that made it horribly broken, or maybe even doing more research to ensure the authenticity of the martial arts styles.
And, my God, are those animations stiff as hell.
Hey, at least they toned down the creation of more palette swapped ninja characters since the early MKs.
Palette swapped ninja characters were my favorite part!
2D + Smooth animation + fix the bugs would make me buy an MK game. Or at least rent it.
Um. I don’t think ED BOON said this. A rep for Warner Bros said this. Not that I like Boon very much.
But ugh. They went from one company that only cared about them making money to another. Boon and Co. MIGHT straighten up and go after good gameplay for real if they didn’t have secondary support to fall back on.
MK Vs. Smash, it’s the next logical step.
You’d think after 8 MK’s if he cared about good gameplay, it would have happened by now. UMK3 being good was a fluke. He said himself he doesn’t care about the competitive scene. He’s going strictly for casuals. Hence why MK is spent strictly on presentation. Which is silly considering Tekken has strong presentation AND great gameplay.
I think it’s just an excuse for poor design. Even my friends that don’t really “play” fighting games (the way I or a lot of posters here do) say that MK sucks balls after ten minutes of playing it and seeing a couple fatalities. It has no staying power. A true rental fighting game if ever there was one.
Smash is a fighting game…
That’s why it was at EVO!
Yes, Boon. Give us great network play so we can all be certain that it’s the actual game that is fucking unresponsive.
Do you have any idea how much money they spend on Tekken compared to MK? Midway can’t afford to have both.
Let’s face it, Japan makes way better fighting games than we do.
Better games to watch on youtube maybe, better games to play? , their first priority will always be the arcade market, which is a different dynamic than the american market.
On one hand, it’s easy to say lol mk boon ok… but considering the state of the industry, he might be just crazy enough to use common sense and give the game modern online play.
Taking that into consideration…most of Midway’s big time franchises from back in the day have either faded into obscurity or just died flat out. I think MK is the only thing that’s giving them a constant flow of money currently. Kinda sucks too…I wouldn’t mind hearing someone yell ‘OH MY GOD HE’S ON FIRE!’ every couple of years.
Ahh. That took me back about 14 years…
Exactly, QFT!
