MK9 trouble

Call me a noob or w/e but my biggest problems online with MK9 is getting stuck in a combo block strings ie. smoke and raiden. How can I get away or counter them when they keep coming at you with combos besides letting them hit you and wasting meter on a combo breaker to reset them.

Actually your first problem is not posting this in the MK section.

K but where would that be? I didn’t see a general forum for specifically MK.

crouching jab or uppercut is often fast enough to punish holes in blockstrings. Almost everyone’s xray has super armor and will punish any string with a one frame hole. A lot of characters also have really fast specials to punish small holes, like reptile’s dash or cage’s flash kick.

you can scroll down the next time, or use the “Forums” Tab at the top of the page

General Strategy - MK

Just block.

Just wait for a reset. One of the easiest things to do is use crouching kick not sweep or simply jump forward and try to hit them or jumping backwards is ok I guess.

I was actually about to make a post asking the same thing about the same character (Raiden). I got spammed to death this morning by some turtle / masher. He would literally spend the majority of the match crouch blocking and when I would try to approach him, he’d just mash crouching kicks to push me away. He’d push me away, and then either teleport or do the Raiden superman thing. Most of the match he just stayed crouch blocking. Every time I’d move towards him to use my overhead or a throw, he’d just crouch kick me. Seems like the options are kinda limited.

If it’s online it’s probably a bigger issue than offline because the windows to get out of frame traps are less present. Also some strings you just can’t get out of and have to let them do them until they push you out of range, I know Johnny Cage has one as well as Cyber Sub. Mostly it’s restricted to the heavy rushdown guys. Sonya has one that simply cannot be escaped period, but that one is getting fixed. Also a lot of strings that come out fast are high so you can naked duck them and uppercut. It’s a lot like Tekken in that way, in that a big part of the game is knowing your opponent’s strings and where you can counter them.

Another thing is, if you see the enemy crouch blocking (Or throwing out crouch attacks) you can actually jump in safely form as far out as just under 2/3 screen, and because there’s actually recovery on blocking and standing up you can get a jump in followed by a mixup. (Since jump ins confer frame advantage)

Also if they’re seriously just hitting buttons as you get close, you can space them out and whiff punish. A lot of pokes and normal sweep have decent range. Again though this is harder to do online.

Thank you for the help, and not criticism. It was online, and there was a substantial amount of latency (of course). I’m finding this game is flush with people abusing the lag. It’s so hard to do anything when they’re just spamming you with mash combos.
