Yeah, I know he has mix ups, but the opponent is going to let me use them out of the goodness of his heart. How are you getting in? Lui Kang has his f1,2 and f+3, as well as his f+2,4. Raiden and Smoke have their teleports etc. What’s Sub Zero got that supposedly makes him top tier rushdown as opposed to top tier zoning? If 2,2 is all Subby has to work in with to start mix ups I think I’m just gonna keep zoning until I land that freeze.
Raiden is beyond ridiculous. Seriously needs toning down.
IMO the more and more I play, I think Johnny Cage is going to be the one thats ends up being just stupidly ridiculous. The dude has ridiculous safe and effective High/Low pressure with a get out a jail free card against most characters with his shadow flip kick. He can get your ass to the corner in mach 3 where you are royally screwed. Plus his counter X Ray makes you scared to even touch him when he has full meter. Johnny Cage is nuts.
my top 5 for now
Kung Lao - anti air into massive damage or easy hit konfirm into x-ray
Raiden - Teleport, useful ex moves
Smoke - fast, fast, fast, mix ups, teleport
Ermac - crazy zoning, easily bait people with his moves
Johnny Cage - pressure, mix ups, easy anti air, easy juggles
Soooooo many Ermacs, Scorp, Smoke online
after seeing tb’s sub zero
its kung
raiden
ermac
smoke
sub
waiting to see an abusive shang
Kung Lao is not #1. He is too high risk high reward for the insane damage people talk about. 60% (with XRay) is about the most practical you can do in the corner with Kung… a lot of other characters can get close to that with XRay in the corner as well. His teleport is garbage. Spin is punishable by full combo, same as his dive kick. People just haven’t learned how to fight him yet.
i didnt order it at all but

kung may be very punishable but he can also punish insanely well
You do realize that most of those insane damage combos are SHEEVA ONLY combos because of her hitbox properties right? Most of that shit works on 0% of the rest of the cast. So Kung Lao has a great matchup against Sheeva, so does most of the cast because she is a pretty shitty character.
Also, you have to realize what combos of those are practical. People like to judge everything in a combo video by the damage itself without looking at what is actually happening. Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you should do it when you can do another combo where you are 95% more likely not to drop it while only taking off 10% damage.
I think Kabal is really good. He almolst always able to land a 30 precent dmg on punish and he is somehow a sleeping giant to me just because of the fact he can pressure with his run-stop just like Guy in SSF4, but considering that breaking throws is really hard in this game, and that Kabal has like a ton of good mid-low mixups (if to consider his command throw and saw blade), he seems like a really dangerous dude.
All he needs is some good player to learn all his tricks and show it on some tournament and people will start to fear him xD
I’m learning him now, hoping to test him againts real people online once PSN is back to live.
Loving Kano too. Too bad he doesnt have even a SINGLE low mixup (except for the sweep lol). But I’m loving the character (his x-ray is soo bad ass) so who cares
no i understand that 90% of the game isnt combo damage, but that shows that kung has great damage potential along witha complete repertoire
It shows he has insane impractical damage on SHEEVA ONLY. Remember that most of those combos are sheeva specific combos only (which a lot of other characters have as well). There just happens to be a Kung Lao video on youtube.
Hmm, is Cyber Subby really that bad? I found myself pretty confortable fighting with him. Dive kick, bombs, freezing projectile: I dunno, maybe I have yet to see his weaknesses.
Reo just got done with a match just now using Cyber Sub-Zero in PowerUp’s top 8 finals with success. Could be that no one knows how to face a Cyber SZ shrug
Haha. That was just a helpful suggestion, and not a douche response.
Doesn’t matter if his vid is Sheeva only.
How many characters can get 40-50% meterless of a simple anti-air? Not many. Breakers take 2 bars so yeah you’ll proably be able to save your butt 1 time per round. But in the same round Kung Lao will have 4-5 opportunities to land one of his massive combos.
I’m not saying Kung Lao is the best of the godtiers. I’m just saying he’s right to say Lao is high tier.
But yeah to me Raiden is way more scary only because of his faster teleport and his flying superman move. I played a bit with Raiden today and it all felt way too easy. I could easily teleport on reaction to get free punishes. I was also surprised at the amount of safe on block strings he has. It was easy to trap people and surprise them with a random flying superman. Raiden is wack. I don’t like him. I also don’t like how he throws his lighting, looks so silly lol.
Sub-Zero and Johnny Cage are legit at least.
He’s S tier. Ignore the shitty prima guide list in the main post.
How does his vid not matter if it is Sheeva only? What relevance can you gain for an overall perspective of a character if you are evaluating what he can do to only one member of the cast?
If you go back and look at my top 5 I have Kung Lao at #5. So I realize he is very good im not arguing that. However, the arguments I see about Kung being #1 or top 5 in general are only because of this one video of crazy damage combos that aren’t practical whatsoever and can only be done to 1 character.
Also I don’t know what combo he can do to a character not named Sheeva that does anything anywhere near 50% of an Anti Air spin while spending 0 meter. If you know of any please post a video of one being showed or the inputs used.
Sheeva and Baraka doesn’t belong in low tier this list was made embarrassingly too early. Sheeva had GREAT 50/50 and great mind games with her teleport stomp and her EX Double fireball which gives you an auto 19-23% combo. And Baraka EX fury move… dare i need to say probably one of the best EX move in the game. Sheeva has some great keepaway moves and plus some nice arieal balance and anti air.
Call me crazy but I think Mileena might make it into the top eight once it’s all said and done. Good zoning, speed and mixups. Roll can AA almost the whole screen. Fast overhead that causes bounce and a low you can combo after. Solid
i think we can say that balance in this game (besides glitches) is far better than SF4 on release.
sagat, ryu… and where the hell are the other characters?
shang, kitana, mileena, reptile, kabal and sonya are all more than capable… and they’re barely getting a mention.
i also think that noob has potential - but i can’t quite figure it out at the moment.
