MK9 Tier List discussion thread

Lol Sheeva is in this game? I thought her ass was lame back in MK3. Not surprised to here that she’s bad in this. I did find it sad that I saw no play of Jax in any tourney vids I watched. I never found him fun to really play with back in the SNES gen, why is he lacking in this game?

Hate to say it but I’m glad to hear about Kano’s upball because currently it is kind of ridiculous. I’ve been trying to learn what punishes it on block and not having much success. Can’t beat em then join em right? Took my newbie Kano with zero character knowledge except one move (upball) online and did nothing but mash that repeatedly and won 28 straight (seriously) and in the hardest arcade ladder it got me all the way to kahn without losing any rounds.

Oh god, are we really basing how good a character is by how easy is it to destroy scrubs?

I’ve been using Kano since day 1 and never had any issues with randoms online even with a highly punishable up-ball. Kane has always been a good characters and it’s disappointing that people are trying him out now due to a buff he never needed. No one asked for up-ball’s buff, all Kano players just wanted his F+3 to be a low.

And frankly, why is everyone just now ragging on Kano’s up-ball, when Johnny Cage’s flip Kick is basically the same thing?

Can someone here help me out here with throws? I’m getting tired of people who just constantly throw just because they can and don’t do it “wisely” (I guess). I manage to tech about 2 and/or manage to make them whiff about 3, but that’s not enough. Even though I mostly win against them it’s getting on my nerves. It just ends up coming down to them deciding not to complete a target combo to throw, them dealing a big damage combo when they catch me anticipating the throw, the typical teleport and throw with certain characters or me just jumping all over the place which clearly isn’t good to do against certain characters. It’s worse when it’s someone who has a 30%+ combo and all they do is aim to do it and/or intimidate me enough with it so they can get their nonstop throwing on. *Really and truly *gets down to me just guessing just to avoid.

I’m starting to believe they could/are end up being too dominant and should be opened up somewhat.

Back up and projectile them to death? If they are doing this big of a mix-up on you then you can’t really say they aren’t doing it wisely, no?

Kano, unlike Cage, has a good projectile to keep away with, and has a way around projectiles…something Cage also lacks. It kinda makes sense that Cage is really nutty up close, because he can’t zone as well or get in as well. Not saying it’s entirely right, though.

Cage’s flipkick isn’t the same as Kano’s new upball. The flipkick was punishable by antiair jabs. Kano’s upball is punishable by 3 uppercuts 5 special moves and universal d+1. And universal d+1 doesn’t combo so it’s not going to help other than stagger him.

The problem with upball is now the fact that you don’t use it as an uppercut. You use it as a pressure tool. It’s like fighting online ken player 7. dp dp dp dp dp.

If you know your spacing any character can punish it. I mean, Most characters in the game can punish it by forcing him into a blockstring for doing it. If he mashes another upball he gets combo’d in startup. It’s godlike, but it isn’t full lockdown.

inb4 lol Kano bandwagon. Been playing Choke a Bitch since launch.

I played Kano before patch

I know people are down on Scorpion, but I think he is a pretty solid character. His specials are mediocre, but his normals are great. Hellfire is a pretty good special when used sparingly. Meaty hellfire is interesting for mind games. 111 and 334 are great strings in general.

His regular teleport is awful, though. It’s funny how people use his worst moves (regular teleport and slide attack) so damn much.

Scorpion’s not bad, but he has so many issues with his gameplan, namely the safety of it. He’s the epitome of risk vs reward.

I hate fight decent scorpion’s, it’s such an inconsistant match-up all due to whoever guesses right. I never feel like I earned my win or loss. .

It’s pretty much a game of gambling vs Scorp lol.

Tiers or tears. I play Stryker and honestly you need to wait a year for tiers. Just wait. All will become clear.

That he’s decent?

Clone zone-control, Good damage, not overly difficult kombos, Slide etc

In the hands of a good player is where you will see Subs true power.

Check the Clone-usage in the Match around 5:24 for example

^ Few things you forgot:

-Ice Blast is a traveling 30% combo lol. So of course that means he wins zoning trades.
-2, 2 is one of the only strings in the game that is anti-jump. 2nd hit is non-physical I think so it can’t be break.
-Sub can go punch for punch vs Kung Lao (according to Brady).
-Has full control of space and flow of all matches because of clone alone.
-Has underestimated offense (again according to Tom).
-Very fast and effective x-ray.
-Very few or no bad matchups at all (Not sure about this, I think Tom’s opinion is somewhat biased because he knows how to handle the bad matchups so for him and his sub: everyone is 5-5 at worst)

Haha, that’s why I say Scorpion is the El Fuerte of Mortal Kombat. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d say Nightwolf is a hard matchup for sub. Played against a decent Sub with him, some noteworthy things:

-Blocked Slide leads to a F+3 combo.
-Freeze from far away gets reflected, too close gets blocked & shouldered.
-Nightwolf’s combos overall do more damage than Subs, meaning that Wolf can afford to zone more if he gets in.
-EX arrows hits sliders.

Just naming his bad match ups that he has no chance of winning against a guy who knows how to play the match up.

I know the character cuz, I main fam.

No its impossible, unless the Cyber sub is just bad.
