MK9 Tier List discussion thread

Honestly, I don’t see this is any reason not to give him a decent overhead, but that’s just me.

Besides, imo, Noob and Liu Kang are much better at zoning, at least from what I’ve seen.

Seems about right. Kratos may be a bit higher up though.

Funny how everyone thinks Kitana is high tier and all other females are mid tier.

Tom Brady said:

S: Sonya (but after her MS block trap is fixed, she will be A+)
A+: Kitana, Mileena
A: Jade

So we will have at least 3 female high tier characters.

Sindel will stay mid I think. Zoners don’t do well in mk with so many teleporters and her scream is nowhere near as good as it used to be which makes me a sad panda. I quite literally picked up this game just for her and planned to main her but it wasn’t meant to be. I’d be curious to hear her analysis by someone who put more time in on her though.

To me, A if the opponent can’t teleport, B if they can.

Jade’s gonna be pretty damn good when people figure her ex shadow flash out. Shit is bananas.

EX flash is soooo good. HI I’M A FUCKING NIMBLE MECHA GIEF FOR A FEW SECONDS! Pretty much what it screams lol.

Actually Im starting to see Shang being somewhere A+ tier rather then A like I originally thought.

lmao

Yeah I’ve seen that Ex flash in action. Scary stuff.

if you ask me kung lao has an answer for everything, best all around if u ask me

I think Kung Lao is pretty much tops. If not close to it. I think he is better than Sub-Zero either way. Johnny, Raiden, Reptile, Lui Kang, and Sonya are all high. I think Kitana is high up there too. Ridiculous the damaging combos she can land from a full screen fan toss. I have no clue about Shang Tsung though… I haven’t actually seen anyone play him at a high level yet. Same thing with Jade. Any videos floating around?

I just switched to Mileena and am loving it. Not sure how high I would place her though. Her damage seems really toned down from the demo. Comboing into her X-Ray scales like crazy. She is good at punishing stupid people though  And dem sais!

But if we’re talking online with shitty netcode… Raiden and Johnny are god tier lol

Noob - Best zone character. He really does have noob moves… That teleport grab has gotten me out of sure losses so many times. All the shadow moves except the air one are way too fast. Black hole resets are beast… great mix ups and mind games.

Kabal - Easiest combos (that connect consistently) with high damage, Best command grab in the game IMO. He’s a great rushdown Char IMO.

That’s my team. Noob keeps you out, Kabal rushes with those ridiculous combos, and command grabs… So fun.

Shang Tsung looks amazing in these exhibitions videos, but he’s way too slow for high level play IMO… He’d get rushed down before he gets a chance to pull off those strict timing fireball shenanigans.

Reptile is kinda garbage… Not sure why people are saying he’s high tier.

Kano has potential

Smoke can be good just needs more mix ups as he’s kinda predictable.

Baraka… I don’t play with him but I can’t see how he’s low tier.

I could be wrong since I’m not a “high level” player, but I play to win so take it for what it is.

My question then, to you, is have you seen any Reptile tourney vids? If you haven’t, then there’s your answer. If you have…what don’t you understand about it?

^TBH I only seen one legit tourney and it was a Cage/Kang/Lao fest. I don’t recall anyone else being played. lol

I have see a LOT of casual play with Reptile. I should take back that he’s garbage, but I really don’t agree that he’s high tier.

I base my opinion off factors such as:

Ease of combos and damage - Can a BNB be pulled off consistently without strict timing and or meter?

Zone ability/defense - Can you keep your opponent out/get out of trouble fast?

Cheese factor - If all else fails is there something you can lame your opponent out with in a close match?

In Reptiles case I say no to all. His best stuff is setups off the liquid ball. If you can keep away from that he has a pretty weak ground game. His slide has a much shorter distance that Sub. Acid spit is slow/low damage/easy to dodge. To his credit, he is VERY fun to play because of his setups, but in high level play, who’s falling for that? I would like to see if you got some videos.

There far from strict, there super easy, and Shang main game is based around his soul steal more then his fire balls.

wow.

You’re basing your knowledge of the game, tier lists and matchups on casual matches you had vs terrible Reptile players. How can you even disagree if you’ve never actually seen a good Reptile?

Here, watch this match. THTB schooling Ermac with Reptile:

And that’s not even the best I’ve seen from Reptile. You should see the shenanigans some players manage to pull with EX force ball and elbow dash on opponent wake up.

So why is Reptile top?

 1. He has incredible zoning tools (spit, force balls, ex acid spit and ex force balls for shens)
 2. Great mixups + safe on block strings (with acid hand)
 3. He’s the only character in the game that can avoid cross-ups for free (with elbow dash)
 4. He has one of the best x-rays in the game (flys full screen through projectiles)
 5. He has great damage output. Reptile can easily land 35% (even 48%) meterless damage midscreen. 45%+ in the corner.
 6. He can close distance in a milisecond with elbow dash and change sides whenever he wants (position advantage + space control).

And apparently he’s getting buffed a bit. Right now Reptile is A tier at worst. Post-patch some people like REO say Reptile and Kano are going to be S tier easy.

Just go to youtube sometime and look up THTB tourney videos. THTB’s reptile is beast

chris g’s reptile is up there lot of shenanigans, i think lao is gonna be top even after a nerf,u ask me top is

lao(even with damage nerfed his rushdown/punishment and space control is obscene, really quick strings with decent high/low mixups though no overheads worth noting, pokes, ex-tele, u name it hes got it)
raiden(controls the pace of the game, 40% damage output, really fast, teleport is difficult or impossible to punish for most chars, overheads and strong recovery, possibly #1 but i have to give it to lao)
reptile(absolutely crazy quick, like lao capable of both zoning and rush down, real high damage, doesnt have the pressure ability of some others, but still strong in that department with forceball and elbow dash usage, feel like hes still being discovered)
nightwolf (so underused, hes got insane anti-projectile, he can just CHYARGE, punishment, overhead strings that lead into really high damage combos, plus that fucking unblockable shit, perhaps he’s not quick enough in the rush down department?)
sub(controls the pace, struggles versus good raidens and lao’s who understand the power of ex-tele, his rushdown isnt bad either and some of his corner shit is crazy and that unblockable move can really rough some1 up who isnt looking for it)
borderline----
cage (perhaps i’ve misplaced, tom brady makes him look amazing but i dont think he’s on the level of the above chars except for maybe nightwolf who i mgiht be overemphasizing)
ermac( i dont play him anymore as a main (LAO and SMOKE LOL), very difficult to pressure with but after seeing floe’s i have to say if playing really well and spaced really well he’s still an excellent char with real high damage output, floe held his own against PL)
kitana(yeah best projectiles in game, outside of that i dont see her being top)
smoke(loss of otg will ruin, massive damage and neutralizes projects, people underate him imo because of his strings, but his damage is so massive and his projectile punishment is excellent, also decent poke game and he can control space well)
cyrax(perhaps he’s s, but the loss of trapwill make him one of the worst chars in the game)
kabal(piss poor damage in comparison to others, however his tigerkneeish(not the same motion) fireballs, dash cancelling, abilities to apply pressure, make him very versatile)

um… no. he’s got enough other stuff that makes him at least decent or still really good. btw, they should rather remove his net/buzzsaw 81% reset combo. 1/3 meter for this much damage is insane.

Reptile is good because he has good zoning tools. (acid spit is one of the best projectiles, and his acid ball if it hits leads into a 30-50% combo depending how much meter you burn.) When he is on offense he has his elbow dash that is pretty much safe on block (meaning you can open a offense with that move without any real risk but the potential to get a easy combo.) So he is good because no matter where he is on the screen against any character he has options to do damage.

TLDR: Reptile is a very balanced character, from any range he has options against any opponent and play style.

Reptile’s elbow dash is full combo when blocked. It’s the EX elbow dash that is safe on block.
