MK9 Online Pass Discussion

Mind boggling how upset people are getting over that online code thing. I mean, it’s not even a new concept. Hell, older games that have these sorts of locks require you to outright buy a whole new game at full price to get the codes, no cheap 10 dollar buy ins up until recently with the wave of EA games getting a lock.

Here’s my thoughts on the matter:

Starcraft II, one of the best-selling PC games ever, has essentially the same policy (one cdkey per account, one account per person) and I have never heard literally one complaint about SCII used copies being unplayable.

This is nothing new for PC gamers, console players just need some time to adjust to the concept.

PC games in general have had this sort of practice for over a decade, no Key, no online… well, much more severe really, with online authentication in some newer games meaning no key = no play ( in theory, usually pirates destroy that idea in a few days, but that’s besides the point ) and no access to a cheap license like in this case.

Yup, that’s why I have absolutely no problem with this policy, as the majority of the games I play already have it implemented.

People are acting like it’s this huge deal and shocking new policy but it’s been around for a long time, just not with console games.

didnt i already tell everybody on this thread thats what was gonna happen like several weeks ago when one of the guys dissected the demo code and found out about the pass? i was pretty sure i did lol. i guess its just new for some people now lol.

I don’t understand why people are getting angry?

Aren’t they going to buy the game when it gets released and receive the online pass anyways?

I imagine a lot of angry people are the ones who would otherwise buy it used, and then there’s probably a few “conscientious objectors” who oppose the principle in general.

Didn’t see that before, but you called it.

Two words: Cheap people.

Pirates, Used game buyers, people who feel that they should own a game rather than license it, and people who outright object to any sort of expense a company imposes beyond the base cost of purchase.

Yeah, I just thought “how could you get pissed over this?” At least to that level.

People hate hidden fees period. When you break it down from a financial standpoint, it kind of makes sense they’d charge for online if you got the game in a way that doesn’t benefit them. Still, I bet most people who don’t read these news articles are going to be surprised when they get the game and this 2-day trial notification pops up.

As I see it, there are two things to take away from this online pass thing:

  1. It might foreshadow that the game’s online play is worth giving a shit about, because the publishers are willing to charge people money for it. Good thing.
  2. It might foreshadow that the game’s lasting value is incredibly low, so they charge a separate online pass to circumvent selling the game used. Bad thing.

Not really. You need a pass to play Dead Space 2 online and it’s absolute crap. The WWE games started to implant this as well and the online is just as shitty as it’s always been. Don’t believe for a second that charging a pass for online means it might be good.

I’m not effected by this at all. I own a few games that I need a pass to play and didn’t hurt me one bit. I even sold one of them to Gamestop and it didn’t seem to hurt the trade in value at all.

Though I’m trying to have hope, MK has NEVER been significantly good online either way.

I guess I should wait for first week impressions before using my code then, huh?

That’s the would be the safe way to go about it. If the game offers you a trial before needing to input the code take full advantage of it.

My main concern is if I take my game to a friend’s house for them to try, can’t any more (at least for online play) without paying extra.

^Why can’t they go to your house?

take your hard drive. problem solved. just like if there were unlockable characters and your friend didnt have them? you would take your hard drive.

people are really over thinking this shit. its really not a big deal at all.

im pissed because im cheap. but i planned on getting this on day one new anyway, so it dosent effect me in this case. i just dont like the idea of it.

i buy lots of games used for 30$ and under. not looking foward to eventually raising that budget.

yes im selective about what gets me pissed, but theres a bunch of games that i wouldnt have gotten a chance to play if not for their reduced price.

therefore, the companies that do this are going to miss out on a certain group of players. especially with all the sequels that get released. some people wont get to play those second and third games if they never play the first one due to its price.

i guess you could make the argument of just wait until it drops down in price, but games have a way of falling off my radar after being out for so long.

edit: In response to Shoryu Reppa:

True, provided you’re playing on 360 (and you and your friends have the same type of 360 model/HDD). The PS3 version MIGHT, if we’re lucky, allow you to copy your save file and bring it with you on a USB stick to unlock characters quickly, but that won’t work for DLC.
