MK9 | News & Discussion (Updated as news happens!)

On that note, if they REALLY made everything “Klassic,” you’re going to have a bunch of pallete swaps on your hands.

They’ll probably make “Klassic” for some, and “Old School” (“Klassic” look, but with different elements like MK:Shaolin Monks) for others.

That is, if they don’t decide to throw in some new ones altogether.

I’m buying all the DLC has to offer.

GO FOR BROKE BABY!!!

lol some characters like Tsung could have like 4+ costumes (long white hair/robe, hat/suspender slacks yellow & blk, ponytail blk hair/revealing pants lol, MKA costume).

COSTUME HYPE!!!

The irony is that this seems to be cool now. Even back in the day we used to rag on the game for half the cast being technicolor ninjas. Yet now it would be retro cool for all the ninjas to be palette swaps. Same with the female ninjas and cyber ninjas.

I’m convinced it’s going to happen. It’s piss easy work for huge payoff. Since there’s history behind all the possible costumes, that nostalgia factor is going to make these far more attractive to people than anything Street Fighter could pull with alts with the possible exception of Chun-Li’s Alpha leotard.

The thing I’m trying to figure out is how they’ll do the ninjas who weren’t in MK1. Because part of the charm they seem to be going for is palette swapped ninjas. But if they give those other ninjas their MKII or UMK3 costumes then they won’t be perfect palette swaps which breaks the illusion. But if they make them actual palette swaps they’d be dressing them in a costume they never wore. A bit of a dilemma.

Oh, well. I guess they have to give every ninja every costume variant! :pleased:

Meh. Don’t know. On one hand, people who appreciate the nostalgia would like a lot of the outfits to be the same. On the other, you’re basically paying more money for the same outfit in different colors. I don’t think the nostalgia factor will overrule the “lazy” factor for most fans, whether they “get” the reasoning behind the copy and paste outfit or not.

They probably won’t get away with charging a lot per costume, sure. Especially if there are so many. But if they pepper them in along with “legitimate” alts that are actually new it might work out well.

May I ask whats the situation about MK animation being considered bad? I’m honestly not seeing the stiffness.

In the 2D games because the moves were motion captured the animation was generally stiffer than the capcom games (at least after games like alpha were released).

IMO the animation that people are complaining about now is more a product of the game being a 3D rendered engine, and I don’t think it’s looking too bad.

It’s improving every time we see it.

plus its coming from a lot of SF4 fanboys, thus making their opinions shit.

I personally don’t see the “stiffness” in 2d mk games (once you get past the fact that most characters have the same normals). infact, I think it’s very fluid especially for it’s time. mk4 had horrible animation though.

then with the 3d mk games the animation got better with each new mk game released.

i mean mk isn’t gonna be a fluid as tekken, vf, or soul calibur…because of the motion capturing they use and pay tribute to the series. but it is definitely making progress.

the only people who will struggle with getting used to how mkix moves are those who never touched a 3d mk game. because to me mkix is just a MUCH better mkvdc, without step, and a lot more fluff.

They do really need to drop or really work on improve the mocap. As much as I’ve been a fan of the series and as much as I’m looking forward to 9, the animation is bad, especially things like Kitanna’s hair. It shou8ld be embarrassing to the team that the animations are so bad

That’s because there isn’t any “stiffness”. UMK3/MKT is very fluid.

The 3D MK animation is absolutely horrendous, and never really improved to be honest.

It’s so incredibly dumb how they’re making it look like a 3D game played on a 2D plane. They should just trash anything they did with the 3D games, take a look at UMK3 and then go from there. The animation in MK9 is gutter trash.

Agreed, I really can’t stand it.

Everyone should just blame Carlos Pesina for animation, the one man MoKap.

OJuggernautO: i agree. i don’t see any of the 2D MKs having bad animations, but these 3D ones look really unnatural…

Carlos is Raiden. Raiden will find you and fry your ass like a fish filet.

:coffee:

I too think the animation in the 3D MK’s is bad. MK9 looks like more the same. It’s so damn stiff. It’s like there is no transition animations barely at all.

I don’t buy the it that they are paying “homage” or keeping it “mk” with this crappy mocap and animation. Unreal engine is more than capable (I am just assuming it is using UE3). I just think they don’t have the best animators/mocap, or whatever. Maybe they should keystroke everything instead of using mocap. I mean, it could have animation as fluid as Soul calibur 4 or tekken 6, and still have over the top violence and blood.

Also, I think Kintana’s hair is just a bug, nothing to harp on.

Until they go back to digital actors, MK will never look or play the same. And thats such a shame because of how good it would look now, how easy it would be, and how CHEAP it would be to produce a MK game done like the first 3 MK’s.

well then do you guys feel the animation will ruin the game in anyway? i mean if it doesn’t interfere with the competitive side of the game than I don’t have a problem with it.

Who knows. the game does have a high chance to blow ass, simply because its a MK game.

Tim that seems a bit bias . Its not like every MK series was bad game. A fair amount was but that can be said about any game series. The MK team seem to be on the ball on trying to make this game good. Their applying new and old things to please everyone, and from what I can see its looking to be good.

I’m not sure if I’m being too lenient but i think this time around, MK9 is aiming for success. I’m confident The team realize that their last two titles wasn’t their best work.

Meh…
