MK9 | News & Discussion (Updated as news happens!)

More than likely it will be 1v1. But we can’t say 100% yet, 2v2 may be the best way you can play MK9.

@Gorehound
We’ll have to play the game first to decide. It’s not like NetherRealmStudios is gonna tell us how to run tourneys.
I’d love to see Tag Mode be the main tourney game. Seems like it’d keep things interesting for longer.

You and me both, pal. :wgrin:

Of course, on the other hand, why not run both? If MK9 measures up, there could just as well be Singles and Tag tournaments alike. Then everybody is happy.

There’s no telling what the main tourney game will be. Each one is looking pretty viable for that spot.

Lets just hope the game will be good, not fucked up or broken as shit. THEN we’ll go from there.

Bingo.

But you know what I think? When the game first comes out we should do all early tournaments as Tag Battle, just so we can find the broken shit early on.

I hope tag is the standard

four player is sounding too sweet! that shits gona be real fun.
I’m pretty sure there will be a god teir character or 2 at 1st but with DLC hopefully being utilised we will get balance updates ect

what’s the deal with blocking crossups in 2d mk games? Like to block scorpions teleport punch is it a case of timing a auto corected block or simply just hold block and you will always face the right way?

I didn’t think tag mode was actually 4 player, it’s just 2v2 characters.

And block auto corrects in MK. There is no SF style crossup. It’s more of a mind game in trying to trick your opponent into thinking you’re going to attack from a certain direction.

The SF crossups are a product of holding back to block.

I remember hearing from them that they were either thinking about 4 player or that it was actually implemented… Possibly in the last MKast? I know the topic came up recently, for sure.

I don’t know how that would work with a tag system, but who knows.

cool thanks for the info on crossups. is there usualy good options to break through an oponents defence in mortal kombat like rewarding throws,unblockable comand throws and overheads?

Regarding multiplayer I’ve read a few times that theres going to be 4 player tag mode and a 2 player co-op arcade mode.

Try checking this out. It will stand to answer a lot of your basic questions.

There are plenty of options. In MK normals do chip damage. Thats the absolute difference maker. Turtling and blocking the whole match doesn’t usually pay off against a player who has good pressure.

I don’t know enough about MKvsDC to comment on that system, but in most MK you have throws, jab pressure, specials from range, baiting, and all of the normal options you would have in fighting games.

You have to block sweeps, slides and low hits low and there are plenty of attacks that need blocked high.

The engine and mechanics of the MK series is a lot different but from a mental point of view you can bring a lot of the same principles that you already know from other games and have a good base.

There are a handful of guys that are really good in the 3D MK games that also have a background in Tekken as well.

To highlight on MKDC for Lucky, it’s the same deal, at least in the regards of chip damage. The hit levels are more 3D game-like, like Tekken or Virtua Fighter. Also, the game has a meter system that builds the most from either taking damage or having an attack blocked. Since full meter allows you to enter Rage mode (Activation is an unblockable attack that can lead to combos, and guard crush occurs after 2 blocked attacks, and damage is increased…thus allowing for scary unblockable, unbreakable combos), sitting there blocking is definitely in the favor of the aggressor.

…This is pretty off topic, but I’m extremely hype that UMK3 was added to WestCoastWarzone, but I’m TERRIFIED at the fact that MKvsDC was also added… Those 3D games leave such a bad taste in everyones mouths, I wonder if just seeing that game will make people think twice about MK9 ;_;

If NEC was any indicator, I’m not really worried at all about MKDC being played.

thanks for the info Luckyday and CyberAkuma that guide is great il deff be checking back to that for reference. im looking forward to this game more than mvc3 :smiley:

You’re welcome. And trust me, you wouldn’t be the only one, at this point. As far as “big name” titles go, MK interests me more than either of Capcom’s upcoming offerings.

Even so, there’s still a number of unknowns. I wish Boon and krew would get the bright idea from Capcom that, yes, it IS a good idea to get fan feedback from the gamer base you’re actively trying to market the game towards (especially the “finicky” sort that makes up the OG player base). If not through some trade-shows like Comiccon, then they should at least be paying attention to where the UMK3 tournament players are going to be, and “make a special trip” with a serviceable build of the game. Even though I personally don’t care about MvC3 any more, I’ve gotta hand it to Capcom for doing things like this. It’s free advertising, the actual event gets a fairly big bullet point to get more visitors to come out and play, all while the devs get free labor for beta testing, on the same coin.

So, dunno why WB and NR are content to keep us in the dark for right now. But hey, a lot can in happen in 4 months…

evil grin

Anyway, believe it or not, NR is definitely keeping tabs on the MK community. A lot of the things they addressed in the MKast episodes are pretty much things discussed around the main competitive MK forums, like the meter building rates not being 100% final and being able to cancel normals with dash and cancel dash with any option. They lurk for sure. Though it would be a very good idea to demo the game where competitive players would go. It’s worked for Capcom thus far…don’t see why it can’t work for NR.
