MK9 | News & Discussion (Updated as news happens!)

this game’s high/mid/low is retarded anyway, a punch thats hitting diagonally downwards should not hit “high”, and a kick named “low kick” and has the animation of a low kick shouldnt hit “mid” (ermac’s u+4).

other than that i do agree with all your points. right now MK9 is like a dumbed down 2d Tekken…

Launchers are purely cosmetic in similarity. Combos in Tekken are based on risk vs reward with launchers generally being unsafe. The MK cast have loads of safe combo starters off of jabs just like in most 2D fighters.

Strings are pretty ubiquitous in fighting games.

Throws I’ll give you, but oki!? MK oki is really restricted. No tech traps, rising lows/mids, forward rolls, handsprings or even attacks on grounded opponents. Sure you can stay grounded before standing, but it doesn’t do the thing that achieves in Tekken (avoiding mid juggle starters). You can’t even punish them with lows for lying there. You need specific specials like ice puddle or Wolf’s lightning to catch them on the ground.

Different inputs for throw escapes and mids instead of overheads. That’s it.

This is where the simple part comes into play. The game reminds me of tekken more than any other fighter. Not saying there the exact same.

Why don’t I say it reminds me of a old mk…? Well it really doesnt

Breakering throws is nothing new in 3D MK.

pretty hilarious that all the haters don’t know shit about this game.

In terms of the mechanics. I would say it does remind me of tekken. (I play tekken hardcore) but has some influences of SF with the zoning aspects with fireballs. So Tekken players and SF players can get into this pretty quickly. I actually beginning to like this game.

Not necessarily a bad thing. Alot of people call MvC3 a dumbed down version of MvC2 with everyone being able to perform elite combos. Some even compare this to SSFIV to 3rd strike.

Regardless, of what an individuals opinion of this game is. Nothing is going to make everyone happy, if you enjoy the game, then play it. If you do not, then why waste your time? I guess not everyone is necessarily hating it, some of you are offering critical analysis of the way it actually plays, but I’m not really sure what the game is going to evolve into. Might be something, might be nothing. I’m kind of in the “it’s really fun” camp, myself.

i didnt say it is, i was just pointing out how MK9 is similar in some aspects to tekken but theyre all dumbed down (compared to tekken).
I’m really digging the game so far and wish there were locals playing it =/

The core gameplay is really damned good. It may not turn out to be the deepest or most competitive fighter out there, but as long as there’s enough skill involved so as to make tourney play interesting, I’m down. I really like MK9 so far, it’s a refreshing change of pace compared to every other fighter I’ve been playing as of late. So I’m more than willing to give it a chance.

What do you guys think needs to be changed or added to make it more “deeper” or more competitive?

I don’t understand the whole depth talk.

It should have 100 different normals and strings per character…plus parries! Also, more cancel mechanics! Maybe weapons! STANCE SWITCHES!

^Hahaha

Why do people want insanely complicated games with 500 game mechanics and 100 hit combos that have 47 one frame links in them all of a sudden?

That’s why ST is the best, simple yet still compelling :o

Complexity is overrated.

pretty much. it’s mostly the blind leading the blind over here. i go to TYM if i want to actually learn something about the game…

MK9 just may be the best playing “fun game” in fighting games.

It’s just plain entertaining, not just to watch, but to play, except it isn’t entirely shallow and has a few layers o’ that Yomi shit and the like.

It is also unique feeling because while it’s vaguely based on UMK3, in reality it’s the world’s first VF/Tekken style fighting game in the framework of a 2D fighter, with the speed of a 2D fighter, that plays really well. It’s telling that a lot of the people who I see warming up to the game are Tekken fans.

I think it adds a much needed armshot of variety to the landscape of fighting games -variety both in terms of game design, and the kind of show it brings to the community.

Wow all this because I said the game isn’t deep as other games. I guess y’all skipped over the part where I said it’s not a bad thing.

Atleast mk fans are loyal for now, mvc player are hating marvel to it’s early grave.

The funny thing about that is mk9 is “easy” (don’t bash that it’s not a bad thing) has massive 50-100% loops. High damage abc abc abc combo’s a ultra (x-ray, and yes I’m aware on how bar is built) combo breakers, (tvc!) and 50/50 grabs lol…

Again I’m not hating on mk I like the game alot and I think it’s good. Just pointing out some facts.

I Blame all those Japanese games and mvc2 plus sf4

Well we all know that it’s because simple games suck! A game can’t be simple and good at the same. No way any sort of simple 2D fighter could have a scene that lasts very long at all. Nope. Definitely not…

…Complexity can be fun, but a lot of times it’s overdone. A lot, and ends up just being frivolous.

That said, I think the tekken thing is a bit overstated. There’s a tekkenish vibe definitely, but no more than that, too many SF and MKish mechanics for it to be as simple as 2D tekken.
