lol @ people being mad because you can’t hit confirm like street fighter.
Taking away the left/right mixup is awesome because it forces you to learn how to open up your opponents apart from braindead cross ups. Like in MvC3 you think it is really hard to do an instant teleport behind special for cross up? No.
The block button forces people to learn constant safe pressure. With it you only take away 1 option out of the 4 (crossing up).
Hit confirms are overrated. Makes shit way too boring and predictable IMO. Everybody in every match is fishing for that one low jab or short into their big combo for damage. This game you have to rely more on your set ups and commit to something making the mind games and what not stronger. Not every game has to be jabjabjab(OH hey! I fucking landed a goddam jab!) SRK FADC Ultra.
I respect your opinion but I don’t think you did a great job on why you think this game isn’t competitive. It basically sounded like a post about things you personally didn’t like about the game like not being able to cross up and not having hit confirms.
pretty much
That sucks man. Be lucky you can play man. PSN been down for almost a week.
Been hitting training mode tho. Should be good for online play.
This game has good potential to be competitive and already is.
would it be weired to say that I don’t see mk as a agressive game? . Mk is mind game to me. Admittly one will find them self being offensive more time than defense but defense is nothing to snuff about as making a bad choice in MK will hurt. Unlike other game where you could cover your mistake, this game wont. Each side can be exploited evenly.
It’s a Capcom tradition. Look at CVS2 and 3S.
But you know there are fighting games not made by Capcom right?
Besides, while it’s one of the many flaws of SF4, it’s not that simple in MVC3 because you also need to create situations with assists, and bait pushblocks or else you won’t get anywhere.
And in all the animu fighting games you get damage prorate and hit scaling if you start from a light hit so the bigger moves give bigger rewards.(Not to mention they can out-range and out-prioritize the light moves) Also add to that the improved effects on counter hits.
So if you want to start comparing at least do it in a fair manner.
If anything, I’m afraid MK9 will get to be too much of a guessing game because some of the mixups in this game are too strong. I think some characters could make you feel like Tekken 6.0.
For example after you block a jump-in from Scorpion, he mixes between an overhead launcher (which you cannot defend by reaction) or a low->spear for 40% meterless. Either one of you is gonna lose almost half life because of a pure 2 way guessing game.
(and now with the new glitch, that mixup is totally in Scorpion’s favor!)
This is the ugly side of Tekken that can invade MK9 and could dumb down the game.
What new glitch does Scorpion have?
You can react to scorpion´s overhead, smoke´s one is the one im finding a total 50/50
Check Tom brady’s new vid.
Smoke doesn’t have a DEADLY low as far as I can tell, but he has the classic tekken safe on block mid launcher option, which is actually overhead into bomb.
Of course I know there are other games made by Capcom. I should have stated more of the mainstream game. I was more pointing out that something new like this where it is more about guessing and mind games is refreshing. I love MvC3 and I am down with SF4 as well, don’t play it competitively but I will dink around with it for sure. Maybe when AE drops I will get down since it is much more offensively based.
But as far as some of these mixups are too good a lot of games have characters that put you into 50/50 situations (or even worse) that you can’t necassarily react to defensively and have to guess pre-hand. Wesker basically does this to you non stop in MvC3 as well as Magneto and Ammy. In SF4 (Super specifically), characters like Abel and Akuma have ridiculous OS’s where you basically have to guess, and if Viper knocks you down once it is pretty hard to react to everything she can do. Adon’s jump is very ambiguous and feels like a 50/50 a lot of the time because you don’t know which side he will land on.
I’m not saying that this game will be a super competitive game but only time will tell. It is just that most of the arguments I have heard on why this game will be ass at a high level is due to it being different than a lot of what is out there right now. This game might not be the greatest competitive game, but we should give it time before deciding that, but people shouldn’t be disregarding it so quick because it is different.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but at worse, Smoke doesn’t have a scary low for mixups. Sweep is about it…
…
It’s not really “different” it’s just a mishmash of elements from other existing games.
I’d say someone who has played both Tekken and SF4 would be able to find out how to play this game and he’ll be able to “see” what’s good and what’s if he has all the raw information (frame data etc.)
Don’t know if anyone checked out the Alphaism podcast with Tom Brady (There is a thread in the general forums with a link). He broke down some of the MK9 characters and listed reasons why he think they are solid and what not. Anyways here is a quick brief summary of what he said (I recommend listening to it if you have some time though)
#1 in the game: Sub Zero - You have to be smart to use him to this level. Didn’t really catch why he thinks he is so good.
#2: Raiden - Super cheap. Basically a guessing game the entire time you play him. Superman is ridiculous with the armor.
#3 and #4 (interchangable he said): Nightwolf - Didn’t really list why he was so good.
Johnny Cage - Shadow Flip Kick is ridiculous. Have to have one of the fastest uppercuts or specials to punish. Offensive character he is hard to keep pressure on when knocked down due to SFK.
other “S” tier characters
Cyrax - Bomb traps. Without them he isn’t in this category. Described him as a robo-zangief. You let him in and you die. A Zangief that gets you off your spot.
Cyber Sub Zero - Says he beats Shang Tsung (pointed out how he was #1 in the guide) almost 10-0
Other random notes about some characters
Sindel: Says she is probably “A” tier
Stryker: Didn’t place Stryker anywhere but says he has a lot of zoning priority. Also his Roundhouse (st.4) is very good at keeping people out. Says his Xray isn’t that great and meter should be used for EX and breakers.
Quan Chi: His trap needs to be fixed. When they take it away though he says he might have a hard time competitively
Kitana: Very solid. Instant air fan low to the ground is great and her wake up is very good.
Kung Lao: I don’t think he ever gave him an overall grade but he made it seem like he thinks he is very good. He also thinks that people right now just don’t know how to punish him and are crying over him making him seem much better than he is. Spin on block is punished by dash up full combos by most of the cast (stated online might make Kung Lao look better than he is because spin is hard to punish online). Says he is High Risk/High Reward. Dive Kick is good but if you block it then Kung Lao takes serious damage making going for a dive kick in the corner very risky (hence the high risk high reward).
Baraka: Complete shit. Says that Baraka is really the only character in the game right now without a fighting chance.
Besides that he says he thinks the game is good.
thanks for posting all that nissan, tom brady knows a lot about the game right now, but it will be interesting to see over time how these picks end up, between the game being so new, and the stealth updates, it wouldnt take much to really shake things up in the relative power scale.
i also think that tier talk without matchup data to back it up is a bit… eh. but again, tom brady really knows his stuff so it’s still worth looking at
To expend on your post on what he said-
Subs has the best practical damage in the game. His specials are used as defensive zoning to build meter for the only Xray in the game that doesn’t scale in combos. Ice clone is amazing if you know how to avoid the penalty.
Raiden can do whatever he wants and controls the match, and can punish everything on reaction from full screen with EX superman.
Cage’s flip kick is safe and spammable vs a lot of characters, which builds meter for his XR, which makes things worse.
Cyrax is like THawk vs Balrog on ST. If he gets in the match is over. Touch of Death. The thing is that it’s not easy to keep him out so it’s THawk with projectiles and bombs and shit.
Cyber Subs- At the right range his dive kick is safe on block and EX dive has super armor and does 1/5 life. Think Rufus on steroids.
Kitana- the most annoying keepaway in the game. tiger knee fan is spammable and builds huge meter until the opponent can get close. If the opponent tries to jump above it, he risks eating a regular jumping fan into a full combo. Wakeup flaying butt move is invincible, safe, and godly. You can’t pressure her on wakeup unless you win a 50/50 gamble.
The funny thing is that SF4 is a mismash of past SF titles as well but the game is still unique enough to be considered"different"from SF2 or SF3. MK9 is the same way, sure the game does play like a 2D tekken with SF spacing but it still has more then enough unique qualities to itself to be its own game.
My biggest problem with this game is movement and how you cant seem to combo anything from a crouch move.
cant he combo like d3 into smoke bomb? dont have my game right next to me, so i can check it myself
EDIT-turns out, he can not
