E3 2010: Mortal Kombat Creator Ed Boon Interview in High Definition ? G4tv.com

Boon speaking about the game. Nothing too new.

[spoiler= Notable Quotes (Thanks to MKOnline)]Ed Boon: “… Our goal with the fighting system was to create something that’s a deeper fighting engine. And so in doing that we really wanted to open the doors for players to create their own combos. In some of the previous games we had combos that were strung together with button sequences; they’re more pre-programmed into the game. But this one we’re really trying to - our goal is to say let’s just open a big palette and see what players paint, you know, so that in combination with our tag team, we can have characters jumping in and out of the fight, in mid combo, it creates just an unbelievable array of special moves and combos that you can string together, you know, just using your imagination. That’s actually the most exciting part about our fighting mechanic. In designing the characters we really focused in on individuality. We really wanted every character to feel completely different from any other character in the game. And so, they have their own way that they walk, they punch, nobody’s sharing animations and so when you’re playing a character, you’re learning it, you really feel connected to it…”[/details]

Notable Excerpts

[details=Spoiler] "We’re also talking about a new take on the series’ story. “Mortal Kombat has this timeline - eighteen years of making games, and we really didn’t want to just continue, like, chapter seventeen of the whole story,” says Ed Boon, the co-creator of the series. “So we’re kind of doing a Back to the Future type of thing, where Raiden is about to be killed by Shao Kahn, and just before he delivers the last blow, he sends a mental message to his earlier self, so the camera rewinds back to Mortal Kombat 1. The Raiden from back then gets a message and he doesn’t know what’s going on, but he knows something bad’s going to happen, and the game spans Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, retelling the story with an enlightened Raiden, and he’s changing the course of things, so everything you’ve seen happen before ? Liu Kang winning, the guys turning into cybernetic ninjas, are changed around, so you might see a character become cybernetic who wasn’t before, and so you see a different version [of events].”

“The fundamental fighting mechanics are based on custom combos,” says Ed Boon, the co-creator of the series. “We want to do as little of the pre-programmed combos in the game as possible, and let players take pieces A, B and C and piece them together themselves.”

“the gameplay system is a Super meter that functions much as you’d expect. It’s a three segment bar, and different moves use different numbers of segments. An enhanced special, for instance, uses a single segment. Enhancing a super basically gives it more oomph. Reptile’s slimy green projectile gets much larger, while Kung Lao’s spinning hat changes from horizontal to vertical, embedding itself in his opponent’s chest.”

"Of course, the real jewel in the crown of the Super system is that when it’s full you have the chance to do an ‘X-Ray attack’

“For instance, yes there’s lots of blood, but this blood actually has a physical presence in the world, spraying onto characters and bloodying them up. It’s a small touch, but we like. Characters also take damage, so even if you win, chances are one of your eyes will be popping out of your head or your jaw will be smashed off.”

"Ed is happy to talk about online, however. “We have very aggressive plans for online. First of all there’s the downloadable content. That’s a big part of it - we really want to continue to support the game after it comes out with new characters, new backgrounds, new fatalities.”[/details]

6/16/10- Kotaku Preview:The New Mortal Kombat Cuts Deeper Than Ever Before:
The New Mortal Kombat Cuts Deeper Than Ever Before

Notable Excerpts

[details=Spoiler]“Mortal Kombat borrows a feature from other series, like Street Fighter, adding powered-up EX-style moves with a new meter. That meter, at the bottom of the screen, fills as players brutally smack each other around. Not unlike the Pro Moves of Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, those powered up moves make attacks more deadly, harder to avoid. To pull them off, players must pull off a special move, like a fireball, plus tap the block button.
In the case of a fighter like Sub-Zero, his trademark icing of the floor extends from a small puddle to a much longer stretch, making it almost unavoidable. For someone like Reptile, his acid spit becomes more of an acid vomit.”

“Super meter moves also modify attacks in other ways. In the case of Reptile’s force ball move, not only did it make it much bigger, it popped Reptile’s opponent higher, adding more frames of attack opportunity. These moves are key to expert level combos and play.”[/details]

**6/16/10- User Sweetooth @ Kamidogu.com shared a lengthy and interesting description of his experience at the MK9 booth: Kamidogu | Forums | Mortal Kombat (2011) Hands-On At E3 2010 **

Notable Excerpts

[details=Spoiler]Perhaps the biggest improvement to the franchise is the introduction of a new three-tier Super Gauge. Though its official name was not disclosed, it fills up as your kombatant is attacked or is defending from attacks. The first level, dubbed Super Move, allows your kombatant to perform a stronger version of any of their special moves. Not only is this a way to gain the upper hand on your opponent, but you can choose when to release the attack. You are therefore able to deal a quick attack with increased damage, or charge your move longer for a deadlier attack. Should you not use your Special, your gauge will continue to fill until it reaches a lightning bolt, which is the well-known Breaker. By this stage you are able to perform a single combo breaker to save yourself from a giant string of attacks. If you are feeling brave and do not need either the Super Move or Breaker, continue to fend off attacks until the gauge is full, at which time you can unleash your X-Ray attack. With a dual button press, you can unleash a deadly attack on your opponent, dealing high damage and inflicting extreme pain as highlighted by the kombatant’s visible skeleton and muscle structures. This build had much better detail, meaning we saw muscle tissue being manipulated and bones cracking or breaking completely.

Ed later moved to the two-on-two mode, which is surprisingly more enjoyable than the aforementioned (RabNote: One vs One). Working similarly to other tag team games, players select two kombatants and are able to switch between each at will. The thing that sets this apart is the option to incorporate your awaiting character in the battle at hand. You can choose to either have your reserve character pop on the screen and perform a special move before dropping out again, or you can opt to have your current character swap out while your reserve enters the ring with a special move. Choosing this route instead of the normal swap in/out will require you to use the first part of your Super gauge.[/details]

Notable Excerpts

[details=Spoiler]The main menu to the game is beautiful and fully animated, and it’s by far the best looking character select screen from any MK as well. There are 26 characters apparently, with 1 spot for DLC.The whole game, energy bars, even the words “FATALITY” and “FINISH HIM” have an elegance to them. They really overhauled everything this time.

Another really awesome thing is how fights begin and end. Each character has some pretty amazing intro and victory animations. Sub-Zero materializes from ice. Reptile drops in and turns off his cloaking. Sektor shoots flames into the air in a V formation. A flaming hole opens in the ground and Scorpion leaps out of it. When Scorpion won a fight he seriously burned a hole in the ground and dropped back in, then it cut to him landing in the Underworld and doing his victory pose with fire around him. Seriously.[/details]

**6/16/10- Wildgunmen.com “E3: First Look Mortal Kombat”: E3: First Look Mortal Kombat ? Wild Gunmen ? Calgary’s Geek Culture Magazine **

Notable Excerpts

[details=Spoiler]The new addition to the fighting game is the super meter. Similar to other fighting games with a super meter, this one has three levels.

Level one makes whatever attack you?re pulling off stronger. Fireballs become larger, and attacks like Sektor?s teleport punch add another hit to the combo.

Level two is a combo-breaker ? pretty basic, same stuff we?ve seen before.

Level three is the most exciting. Currently dubbed the x-ray attack, it?s a brutal attack that goes into an x-ray mode to show you what you?re doing. Like showing fingers penetrating the skull through the eyes, or breaking someones ribs. In Johnny Cage?s case, it?s the meat sack of the pelvis rupturing after his famous ball-buster.[/details]

Good stuff!

EVO2K11?

I will be hosting casuals/ranbats for this soon! :nunchuck:

[media=youtube]Lp5ekMlQvi4[/media]

Good shit! Let’s give this game a scene in So Cal!

Loving the thread! Keep the news coming. MK9 is looking good.

If this ends up good, I’ll get a scene going in Atlanta. I hope they try as hard as possible to individualize the characters as much as possible, no universal things like in MKvsDC.

Personally I’m LOVING the fact that the focus is on the old characters, and they’re even poking fun at the newer generation “throwaway” characters by leaving them stuck in the background in “unfavorable” situations.

Like here:

You can clearly see Kira& possibly Tanya in the background.

And in these two you can see characters who appear to be Reiko, Kenshi, Taeven & Daegon fighting on the far bridges in the background, where it used to be “Blaze” and some other dude.

I’m hoping to see some of these lame “new generation” characters mutilated in the backgrounds on some of the stages :D! I wanna see Kobra dipped into the acid pools or eaten by a tree hahaha! I always hated that guy :stuck_out_tongue:

I think its time for the trees to eat someone. No joke… lol

I agree too, I heard something may happen if you get a double flawless on the new Living Forest.

In B4 somebody makes an MK style “Skeet Fighter” flash movie and has the trees making out with eachother in the background.

Unfortunate the game is sooooo far away. Glad WB is taking this and running with it.

Actually , it’s better this way . I believe nobody really wants a ‘rushed up’ game . Let them take all the time they need and of course get ready to SPAM Ed Boon’s twitter account if he fucks up!

A better version of the above video can be seen [media=youtube]FbrhREmVJjE[/media]

As long as it’s ready in time to be practiced up and played at EVO2011 they can take as long as they want

Oh and thanks for the link. Updated.

The RUMORS!

Those trees better eat someone! lol

Agreed.

And agreed.

Gosh , t?? many updates too soon. (But I guess it beats having no updates whatsoever)

The Gamestop steam can be seen [media=youtube]P-lxLFt55yQ[/media] . Quality is meh … but at least it has sound … that’s a lil’ off synch in the first minutes , afterwards … it somehow gets fixed.
Better video quality [media=youtube]f1K0MfJcMBY[/media] but without sound (music instaid). jeez -_-
Props to subzerosmokerain and OJuggernautO who found those videos.
ninja edit Gamespot put the stream up 5 minutes ago Outcast found it.
(Damn , beaten by bonj) :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh , I forgot to post this before , props to the OP that gathered all the info in one place.

http://ll.lo.video.gamespot.com/d4/gsc/2010/06/169_day3_stagedemo_mortal_kombat_061710_2000.mp4

I seriously hope that the faraway date yields a great game. MKArmaggedon Outta Here damn near turned me off to the series permanently. This revisiting of the old lore better be fantastic (at least by MK standards).

X-Ray = Ultra

:wgrin:

“Enhanced Special Move” = EX

Fatality = Vanilla SF4 post KO hit
