This pretty much the setup I have been using- not sure what you mean with the “L"and"H” as in mk it is back and front for kicks and punches. I have the astro city layout and every button is with-in easy reach at any given point
L= Front, H = Back. Oldschool MK was LP/HP/LK/HK. Not rocket science, anyhow.
[1][2][blk][stance]
[3][4][tag][throw]
TK Stick
Tried it with a stick but it feels better with a PS3 pad.
Made a deal with myself that if I win a local tourney or two, I’d eventually pick up a hitbox. Especially as a raiden player, teleports and supermans would be way easier than on a pad.
Over on the J.tv streams guys are talking about MK game pads coming out. Similar to the 6 button pads released for SF4.
Anyone hear about these?
I’m playing on the PDP stick and that is without a doubt the best way to play the game. That is the button setup that this game was designed for. Not to mention that the quality of the PDP stick is amazing.
I’m using this one for my TE as well but the hand contorting for “EX” moves is just weird
Tag, LP, HP
Block, LK, HK
I mean, I got an extra stick hanging around and would be willing to get the MC MK panel, but i think I’m missing how the “ergomonic” design really helps.
Yet another recent FG where pad might very well be > stick (refers to my other secret love wwe as)
Most fighters I could use stick, but for any MK game, I always use pad.
Me too. Im an oooooold skool MK arcade player (1-3) and this just fits the old style 5 button layout and makes X-rays easy as pie. I honestly dont like how they tried to make this game feel old skoolish and went with the front/back terminology instead of the High/Low like it used to be and punches on left, kicks on right. Thank heavens for custom control options. Only thing weird about the above control scheme is like someone else mentioned here, it’s odd using the bottom punch for uppercuts but I’ll get used to it in time. Also dont like how they made some moves just make no sense at all.
I do have one question though regarding custom controller layouts… are certain moves tagged on a certain button no matter what you have it set as? Cuz with the layout mentioned above, lui kangs flying kick is done with a punch button, and subzero’s freeze ball is done with a kick. Just makes no sense if those are the actual buttons they are supposed to be.
Just nice to see others have struggled as much as I have trying to find something that works for them in this game. It was kinda driving me nutz when I first started playing.
im gonna be modding my TE JLF with a bat and either a Circle or Octogonal Gate. im wondering, which would be better for MK?
Just a heads up for those using a custom control scheme.
Tower Challenge #33 (pull my strings) did not work at all for me unless I was using the default controller setup.
Yeah, I had this problem too. My setup has the face buttons rotated 90° counter-clockwise from default (classic MK console setup), and the game wanted me to hit the buttons as if they were rotated 90° clockwise from default.
I’d prefer anything besides a stick. Preferably analog but pad is manageable.
It didn’t work for me either; I tried for about 15 minutes to guess the inputs and finally said f-it and just skipped this one
Has anyone used a PS2-360 adapter? Sounds like Skudd was waiting for one. I bought one online and am waiting for it to arrive. I’m wondering how responsive it is. I don’t like the dpad on the Xbox360 and has always loved the PS2 controller.
I’d imagine this game works really well on pad, but I’m not really one to make that distinction as I play pad on all games. I love the button layout of arcade sticks, but I just cannot use joysticks. Never been able too.
To be honest, it’s only ever seemed to be a handicap for me in SF4/SSF4.
Just set your control to default (just open the pause menu, and choose control 2 or 3 or whichever one you didnt change) then change it back next mission.
This sounds unconventional but promising. I imagine it would work out very nicely on the astro city layout, although I would have to get used to using my pinkie since normally I only use my thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers during gameplay. Also, it still leaves 6 button players kind of SOL.
So far the layout I’ve had the most success with has been this:
[FP] [TG] [BP]
[FK] [BL] [BK]
However, it’s not fool-proof, as it still gets awkward if I want to go immediately from blocking to using front punch and back punch. Someone really needs to get on Ed Boon’s ass and ask him about assigning multiple buttons to the same function, because for my MAME cabinet I always found the best MK setup to be this:
[HP] [BL] [HK]
[RN] [LP] [BL] [LK]
Of course again, if your stick can only use 6 buttons you are going to run into problems if you want to play tag mode, which is unfortunate. However, if you have a TE stick or are just playing one-on-one, it would work fine if they would just add the ability to put in two block buttons!
Holy cow. I was playing around with my junky old arcade stick that I built a few years ago, and I think I may have found a format for this game other than the traditional MKX layout that works! Basically, the first arcade stick I built was some bizzare mutation of the HRAP1 layout, however I realize now that the HRAP1 format actually works brilliantly for Mortal Kombat! My PS3 is in the repair shop so I can’t test it with MK9 right now, however I tested it with the original MK games in MAME and I quickly discovered that the game was now a breeze to play.

Here’s a picture of a Vewlix / HRAP1 hybrid layout I whipped up, so you can get an idea of where the MK buttons are:

Basically, you keep your thumb on FK and your index finger on FP (or FP and BP, if that’s how you have the buttons set up in-game), your middle finger sits over BL, and your ring finger works BP and BK. I kicked ass while I was playing the original MK games in Mame, and I did it with no clawing at all.
Of course, this doesn’t really help those of you who want to play using a Madcatz TE, however if you’ve got an HRAP1 laying around there’s hope for you!
