TB says that it is the consumer’s fault for expecting perfect netcode, and not to blame NRS. He says that you cannot provide good netcode without removing frames from the game (which is obviously a lie). So, we can either have a game that plays differently online/offline (like MKvDC), or we can have a game that plays the same offline/online, but has laggy inputs.
This guy is an idiot. If sf4 can have playable online, there is no reason this can’t. Dude needs to get boon’s dick out of his mouth.
wow what a load of shit. i hope this TB guy is not officially affiliated with NRS or anything, because that is pathetic if that is how they are really thinking.
If i’m honest my patience wears thin with NRS. A game i can’t play, no matter how good otherwise, is a joke.
After playing some more I have actually had a few matches that were somewhat playable. The trick is finding people in smaller rooms and if possible forgoing the KOTH (though ive had luck in those occasionally too). Actually was able to pull some combos off a couple times… FINALLY. After I get a few laggy as all hell matches I tend to get angry and just quit though.
ah i’ll give it time. it hasn’t even been out a week yet. i just would like to hear something from them about it.
Netcode and fighting game is the hardest thing to code. Coding something for 2 years from the ground up and it doesn’t work like it was tested really does cause major problems for the developers. I’m not giving NRS excuses or anything but as a Computer Scientist I do understand the difficulty in creating something as robust as it is. Hopefully they can figure out a way to handle the issues.
KotH is where most of the lagginess is because of so many different connections. Oh and don’t say that just because SF did it, they can…while it’s true that both are fighting games and have online, their engines are different and their netcode (obviously) is different. I just hope they can fix it. Playing 1v1 gives me better play though.
It isn’t just the netcode. THey need to completely redesign the search/lobby strucutres. If i can’t choose who i play or how i search then working netcode won’t mean a damn. Even SSF4 won’t work if i’m matched to people from the other side of the planet.
Yes you can…I’ve played players from Japan just fine in SSFIV. As long as the connection is good enough it doesn’t matter. I would rather have the netcode in a way that no matter where the person is I won’t have to worry about lag. I think the lobby structure is fine. It’s just the lag.
Right on brother. I’m so sick of the “online is worthless, go play offline against real people” shtick. I was 10 yrs old when the first MK dropped in arcades, therefore at this point in life, I have better shit to do than try to form cyber gaming bonds just in order to enjoy some solid versus mode. I’ve been fairly lucky with the netcode thus far, and by lucky, I mean minimally frustrated. Lag hasn’t been an issue, but I’m sick of receiving, “this match has been desynchronized” every 8th matchup. It takes a good couple minutes to find one opponent, then that shit happens in the final round. Other than that, a couple other gripes, this game has been ace thus far.
This is really pitiful. According to Tom, you shouldn’t care that your dream car doesn’t work when you drive it on the highway, because all the walking you are now forced to do will give you so much exercise! I still think MK is a great game, but obviously my investment level in it is going to go way down, and I guess I’m back waiting for the AE bus to come around. It’s a shame, the game is really good.
It might be easier for you as you live in the states, i live in the UK. Anyway it doesn’t matter, because ssf lets me choose the search options that suit me and the game works just fine that way. I do not understand why NRS have overlooked this fact. Obviously i’d rather the netcode allowed me to play anyone anywhere, but that’s not going to work in even the best case scenario. Why on earth not provide custom search options - and it’s not just location, what about number of rounds, length, number of players (in lobbies) etc. You have ZERO control over anything online, it’s just a basic search - and even that doesn’t work.
Though now there’s some talk of it being related to the online pass.
i give up trying to play this game online i end up waiting 10 minutes just for the game to drop me when i finally find some one, and if i do manage to play a full game theres so much delay and stuttering i can’t really do much more than very basic PPP combos
this
Remember when everyone was praising Boon for talking all the shit he was talking?
I’d rather have a company say nothing than outright lie and look like shit afterwards.
Boon’s LUCKY that the core game seems really good because otherwise, MK would be dead from the absolutely horrid netcode, to the atrocious button mapping, and the moronic training mode…
All the features in the world don’t mean shit if you can’t even get the basics right.
hey guys, i was looking to buy this game b/c i used to play mk3 a lot but it seems like the netcode is getting a mix bag of reviews. i was reading this thread and i still get the same mixed bad impression. i don’t really care about online features, i just care about the netcode, so what is the general consensus on it and does it seem like it will get fixed in the future if it is bad?
The netcode of the game is TRASH, I’m from Spain and entered a lobby called ‘France’ and things got a little better but I could clearly feel like 2 or 3 tenths of delay on every single match I did… then go play SSF4 with french players to see if it was just my connection but nope, SSF4 was like an offline match against french people, but playing MK9 with French players is simply UNPLAYABLE.
If this continues this way, once I complete Story Mode and some more of the Tower I’ll just sell the game.
The online isn’t a mixed bag, it’s really bad, and there is no indication that a fix is coming anytime soon, other than a optimistic ‘NRS will do the right thing’ hope.
yeah, I’m about 3 seconds away from selling it or just giving it to my brother, it’s not worth the trouble.
If you listen to the Alpha-ism podcast, TB gives a better explanation about what happened with the netcode. Also, he said that NRS is looking into fixing it. That does not mean that they will be able to fix it, but they want to.
Apparently, NRS was trying to use a revised version of the older MK netcode (which worked ok), but it got bogged down by everything they added in the game. Also, the GameSpy servers are partially to blame.
Which older netcode? MK vs DC?
GameSpy servers? I thought it was P2P once you got connected to someone else?
Guess there goes a plausible answer to the question: is centralised server or P2P better?
