I tend to prefer 3rd person over 1st person whenever possible but this game would lose a lot of the tense feeling it has in making those death defying jumps if it moved to 3rd person.
lol. Yeah, multiplayer in ME has a lot of potential.
Another thing I think the original could have used, is a way to make maps. I mean, it was Unreal Engine (though modified I guess). Having a version of UnrealEd with which to relatively easily make user-made maps, and a way to easily manage user-made content in the game, would have prolonged the ME’s life a lot.
It’s EA so it’s going to be on the frostbite engine, not sure how gamerfriendly that is. And it’s a whole other thing to make a console friendly map editor
Instead of making a new thread, I will just use this one. Catalyst is out and so far I am enjoying it. Any early thoughts so far? Of course the story seems bad and the characters are kinda meh but what do you expect when Saarkensian was brought in for character development. Running is a blast though and most of my time is just spent traversing the rooftops.
Is it at least as good as the first one? Ive read graphics specifically textures and image quality especially on console are poor and the combat is kind of bad and apparently some people don’t like that it’s open world.
I’m super hyped to buy it on PC (ugh Origin), I thought the first one was one of the most innovative and awesome ideas for a game in forever, but the execution was just slightly flawed in the later levels. I just spent $40 on Odin Sphere and am addicted to Overwatch and to a lesser extend am still playing SF5, so I don’t know when I’ll pick it up.
Hoping it fixed the trial and error design of the first one if so it could be my GOTY.
from looking at playthroughs of Catalyst…I’m not happy.
the combat still looks like it has the same issues as the 1st game. And it seems, though I could be wrong, that you cant pick…up…any firearms???
again, I’ve only watched a little of one guy’s playthrough, but I don’t see Faith firing off any weapons.
I always thought that the best fix to Faith’s clunky combat was maybe a lock on so she doesn’t just swing and flail her punches and kicks wildly into the air, off target and whiffing bad…but whatever. the platforming & parkour stuff felt solid but what held the 1st game back for me was always the close combat being too janky or clunky. And the fact you always ran out of bullets. Even when holding machine guns which was laughably needless limits put on the player just to force you into more clunky close quarter hand to hand combat.
I don’t wanna judge the game without watching more playthroughs but right now I’m not happy with Catalyst’s combat as of now.
day 1 patch to fix various "bugs"
the npc’s look like late ps3/360 models
lip syncing doesn’t match the character voices, the npc’s don’t even move their lips when they say things
tedious and repetitive tasks
abilities from the first game being considered “upgrades” (I know its a prequel but still)
combat is bugged poor enemy ai, like they wont attack you unless you move
maybe things will pick up but right now I’m not having fun
I kind of liked grabbing pistols while running, sliding around a corner while shooting, ditch the gun, and keep running. You lost very little speed if you did stuff like jump off the wall kick or sliding nut kick. The thing is this was only cool when it was optional and you didn’t HAVE to take out EVERYONE or flat out stop running to do it. You could actually do a bunch of the running stuff, like climbing up things, while still holding the pistol.
The biggest complaint I have about ME:C, besides the AWFUL story, is locking moves behind an upgrade system. That feels wrong to me. I liked how you had everything from the get go in ME1 and it was just up to you to utilize them properly. It’s not like you had amnesia and suddenly forgot how to roll.
when I reviewed the 1st game on Steam I begged the devs to allow Faith in the sequel to carry a small handgun with a couple of reserve clips which she could holster either on her thigh or on her lower back. I know guns are heavy, like I know she can’t run or climb while holding onto an M60…but don’t bullshit us that she can’t make jumps if she sports a small bitchy handgun.
uh, as for the close quarter combat…let’s face the facts no improvements were made. its just copy & paste work from the first game. Which isn’t even any good to begin with. Now, what I think they should have done is replace the close quarter combat with the new cinematic finishers.
the cinematic finishers are quick, deadly, and cool…and if the close quarter combat was removed and replaced with the cinematic special moves in its place you would have quick and fluid action, flowing into the running parkour. But whatever. unless you can mod the game that wont ever happen.
lastly, the red trail that leads you everywhere cuz scrubs couldn’t figure out the puzzle platforming on their own and tells you where to go and kills all of the problem solving fun from the 1st game…NEEDS TO GO! Yeah I know you can turn it off, but it still shouldn’t be there. the color coding of red objects is more than enough.
Catalyst is a huge step back imo.
i’ll still get it one day, but when its dropped in price till its like $10.
