Mighty No. 9 - Keiji Inafune's Next Mega Man

Yea. No. The degree is 100% useless. If both have a good portfolio the winner will be on which style they prefer more not which one has a piece of paper. They care more about what you did and how well you work with a team than if you paid money for a degree that is literally useless in every way, shape, and form.

You want in the industry? Join modding communities and join teams and do mods like fucking crazy, go where the companies are, get to know people in the industry, and do some shit that’ll get you noticed by the company. The degree is just useless. Even people in the industry will tell you that shit is a huge waste of time and money.

But making a game is fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!!
Honestly, I’ve never saw the frustration. Having worked on other projects in the past, I was usually the last one to leave the office, and the one to stay. We even had days were we had to sleep in the office and I loved waking up every morning, wanting to continue the project.

I just started with Unity last week. I worked on a game last spring for school, (breakout in my own engine and it was awful). I’m having some fun, I’m just busting through the tuts on Unity’s website. Definitely just a hobby for now, after I’m more comfortable I’d like to do a game jam for shits n gigs.

Yea, it is virtually useless, but it serves a purpose. If degrees meant absolutely nothing, people wouldn’t spend time, money, and effort to get them. They’re there for show; to get an employer to inquire further and not just pass you over. They basically, when taken at face value, tell people that you know what you’re doing. They’re indicators that you went through certain trials, which is why I say the journey taken to get the degree is worth more than the degree itself. It’s just proof of that. Again, this means less in the creative field, but you’d be surprised how many employers would write you off for a lack of proper education and not even look at your résumé long enough to get to your portfolio.

You’re right about that lol. I really didn’t need the degrees I have, but I got them anyway just to say I did it. No way I’m going for an MBA, though… Not worth it unless I plan on teaching, which I don’t.

I’m a visionary when it comes to game design. I need to be the one directing everything while others take care of shit like coding and animation… I hated those parts. When those two things are out of the way, I have a lot of fun making games.

Everyone has a vision for their game. Anyone can think of an idea, and put it on paper. There’s no such thing as a bad idea. But if you can’t put your idea into action, it won’t matter. The only person who’s able to achieve that, is you yourself. What separates a good idea from a bad idea, are the people who actually put their plan into action.

Loosely related: Concepts are great and all that, but fortunately for people that don’t know what they’re doing, there are experts.

edit: Jesus I’m glad I quit my job. This brings back too many bad memories.. I feel like this is what having Dina on your team must have felt like for… well, anyone that had any idea what the fuck they’re doing on the no.9 team.
edit: I rarely post and didn’t realize that we still have bad smileys. For shame. =[ Consider my dismay to be expressed (Without the need for double-posting! Who knew it could be done?)

Aw man… that video…
On that note, as mentioned earlier on my project, I won’t be making the music. I have someone who’ll be creating the music for me. But since I’m basically lead of the project, I’m educating myself in the music field so I can understand the situation if something were to go wrong. I’ll be creating my own tracks, all the while to test myself if I’m worthy if debating knowledge.

In short, I’m not just getting my hands wet; im jumping into the pool and seeing if I can swim. That way, I can tell if someone is drowning or faking.

“I have a lot of fun making games when everyone else does all the work” lol

Unity and Unreal Engine 4 are free to download and use. Get them and publish a game. Mobile, PC, console or handheld it doesn’t matter, just get something done. Anyone can talk big about making games, or doing it better than an already existing developer but until they actually put something out they’re just spouting bullshit.

This doesn’t make any sense…if it wasn’t for you then why did you waste four years getting the degree…

That’s exactly why it wasn’t for me. I know what I want, but I lack the skills to bring it to life. Sure, I could learn, but I don’t enjoy it.

Pretty much lol. At the same time, though, I’m heavily focused on detail, so I’d want to do everything myself to ensure it comes out exactly the way I want.

I didn’t. The Game Design degree was an Associate’s, not a Bachelor’s. An AAS, to be specific. The other is a BBA with a Graphic Design(my actually career path) focus.

Ah ok. If you really wanted to make games I would’ve thought MS in compsci would’ve been the best option but I have no clue about the gaming industry and how it works though.

It’s unfortunate seeing how unreal engine 4 isn’t optimize for 2D gaming.

I don’t even think you really need a degree at all. You just need to have already made a bunch of shit if you want to get into a studio. It’s a nice field to get into in terms of that, but all the work that you would have done to get a degree is work you need to put in on your own time. There seem to be all sorts of paths you can take to get into it but I would say all of them are pretty hard haha.

@PozerWoIf have you worked with any other engines? I’ve got this list bookmarked: http://www.slant.co/topics/341/~what-are-the-best-2d-game-engines. I’m going to start looking at them after a little while, since the game I really want to make is a platformer… but, ya know, baby steps. (Plus Unity has 2D option now).

It is pretty impressive how quickly you can put something together in unity if you have an idea about what you’re doing. (Still doing tutorials, so once I start working on the simple sports game I thought of last night it may be much less simple haha. Fuckin hate having to think for myself).

If you’d like to get more down and dirty on the conversation, hit me up a PM and I’ll send you my Skype.
My coding abilities are rather weak, though, familiar with the field, I doubt I’m ready to do anything just yet. I tend to educate myself on the subject sometime later next year. As for now, I’m currently in the art field, taking up some online courses and attending offline sessions to help improve art abilities. All the while self teaching with random resources pulled from art communities who recommend to follow X path, and having my worked graded by art buddies those involved with the industry.

I expect to take these strong educational methods for both Music and Programming in the near future, but 2015 is the year of art for me.

Better that that happened 6 yrs ago and not now. Tumblr would be all over your ass on how “transphobic” you’re being.

On topic: The Dina-saur’s finally extinct? Took much longer than I thought. That Canadian dude with a $100k salary got fired in a day for yelling out “Fuck you in the pussy” just one time…

That Canadian dude is also a man who said that to a woman. 10-0 matchup right there.

This is what every single business meeting with any client is basically like. I’m so glad I don’t have to go to these types of meetings anymore. There isn’t enough money to deal with that level of bullshit. I’d rather be waterboarded than have to be in a meeting filled with MBAs/Marketers.

Naw man he’s not the one who said it someone else did. The gut who got fired silly said he thought it was funny and that is why he got fired.
