Mid Screen EX Tooth into Avalanche

A couple days ago, I mentioned in the matchup thread that I was having success with a backdash after a level 2 focus to set up EX tooth into Avalanche in the corner (since the backdash puts you at a safer distance if the FA is blocked, and still gives you time to follow a crumple with EX tooth), and as far as 1/4 of the map out of the corner. I also mentioned that I had some success getting it to juggle into avalanche mid-screen by crossing up after the EX tooth connected, but inconsistent.

Inconsistent no longer (or at least, much, much more consistent than before). If you time the EX tooth just a fraction of a second late after exiting the backdash (it feels like about 3-5 frames to me, but that’s just ballparking it), it will fairly consistently cross up medium and small sized characters (including shotos), and send them flying in the direction you hit them, giving you a time buffer to land the Avalanche. Credit to Eddosan for pointing out that EX tooth crosses up after the hit more frequently with that moment waited.

So, to clarify, let’s say I’m on the left, my opponent, Ryu, is on the right, and we’re mid-screen. I charge focus to 2, release and backdash, wait a fraction of a second, then EX tooth. If I’ve done it correctly, I should land on the right side of Ryu, and he will be sent flying right so that he passes over my head. Normally, he would be flying away too quickly to juggle into the avalanche, but because he now flies over me, I’m given some time, and if I execute a Jaguar Avalanche, I will catch him as he’s passing over me. In order to do this, I typically execute the Avalanche motion backward (since I’m doing the directional inputs while he is to my left, before he passes over me). Eddosan mentioned he was doing the command with QCB, QCF KKK (or perhaps more accurately, quarter-circle left, quarter-circle right KKK, if we’re sticking with my example positioning), though personally, two QCB’s seemed to be more reliable for myself.

There is some situational weirdness with this based on screen position, but fairly uncommon. For example, I find if I’m too close to the corner, with my back facing it, I occasionally crossup too deep, and the opponent is sent flying back the direction I came from, rather than in the direction I was moving. Obviously, this makes it impossible to juggle into Ultra from that position, but hey, your opponent is flying into the corner, so I’ll call that a victory.

On larger characters, this method seems to not work, though Rinsuku has found some alternatives for Zangief and T. Hawk, which can be seen here:

EDIT: The EX Tooth does not appear to cross up after the hit if you connect the focus attack from the max range, but just slightly less than that, and it works fine.

So here’s the list of characters I was and was not able to get it working against, with some character-specific notes where necessary.

Works against:
Ryu
Ken
Honda
Ibuki*
Makoto
Dudley
Gouken
Akuma
Gen
Chun*
Cammy*
Cody*
Guile*
Blanka*
Fuerte
Vega
Fei Long
Rose (do not delay the EX tooth after the backdash)

Does Not Work:
Seth
Dan
Sakura
Juri (third hit of Ultra whiffs, no animation)
Dhalsim
Viper
Bison (third hit of Ultra whiffs, no animation)
Sagat
Dee Jay
Guy
Hakan
Zangief
Rufus
Balrog
T. Hawk
Adon

*Notes:

Ibuki, Guile and Cammy: The spacing on the FA is very strict. You really need to hit that sweet spot. For Ibuki, you want her at the range where her forward hand in neutral standing position is touching Adon’s arm. For Guile, you need to be just shy of max FA distance.

Cody and Blanka: Very strict spacing as well, however if you dash forward rather than backward, the EX tooth crosses up after hit easily.

Chun: Everything is easy, except you have to activate the Ultra extremely quick. It may be one frame. Too late and she’ll fly right past.

Interesting. will try this when I get home. I thought it only worked in the corner.

Updated first post with compatibility list.

Nice work on making the list, you actually got me playing my favorites again i almost went 2 the high tier characters and just lamed it out but you saved my adon.:china: Its not that this finding is going to be omg wtf broken it’s just i picked adon 2 try it out and i felt alot better than i did in 4 hours of playing guy and juri. Ladies and Gentleman this is how you know when a character is your main or secondary.
