Microsoft Windows 10 thread

Been knowing about Classic shell for a while actually and used it with Windows 7. Was worried it might not be compatible with
Win10 but, it’s been great so far. XP is my all-time favorite Windows. I love the look and how things are accessed and set-up.

Besides Classic Shell running great, Win10 also has some nice features of it’s own that i feel are a step up from Win7. Things just seem to run smoother.

Yeah the idea Microsoft wanted Win 10 to be a unified multi-platform OS.
To run on traditional x86 computers as well as mobile platforms that runs on Arm processors.
To do that Microsoft reduce some of the overhead to the OS, and for the Mobile versions Rewrote code for arm processors.

I’m having an issue and was wondering if anyone knew anything about it. My laptop was running fine for the first couple days, then it updated. Now if it sits idle for a while, nothing running, it just freezes up. It doesn’t shut off or give me a BSOD it just freezes. I have to do a hard reset. It doesn’t happen all the time, it only happened twice but its strange.

Anyone know anything about such an issue or what could possibly cause it?

A BSOD should have information onscreen and probably in Event Viewer that can usually indicate what’s failing and potentially why.

There is no BSOD. Its just stuck on my desktop. Nothing responds, not the mouse, not the keyboard, nada. Only thing I can do is a hard reset.

I did a bit of looking around and found that some people have similar issues and they had to disable some auto-defrager thingy in the task scheduler. I did that. So we’ll see how it goes.

P.S. Also as I was reading I learned that when 10 updates it tends to turn things you disable back on. I just had to do an update. I’ll have to check if that shit is enabled again.

Anyone know how to turn off auto-updates on 10?

Edit - Ive only been using 10 for about 5 days or so but I’m actually liking it.

Most of the things that “turn back on” are just things that no controls were exposed for turning off, so the system wasn’t designed to keep track of state on those components. It’s the same shit (AFAIK) as Windows Media Player losing track of settings between updates: there has to be code to track that kind of thing. If there isn’t, thing simply just reset to the defaults. The Creator’s Update addresses most pain points there as far as I’m aware.

Ah. OK, that’s not a BSOD, which is a pretty specific term (consider bugcheck.w (I think that’s the name) which lists the bugcheck codes and blah blah for debugging). System freezes are different. Event Viewer maaay have data, but that’s the kind of thing I might put under a kernel debugger which doesn’t help you at all.

I have Enterprise so I have the option of doing it via group policy.

run
gpedit.msc
computer configuration
administrative templates
windows components
windows update
configure automatic updates
notify for download and install

For defrag, you may have disabled only a single task/trigger for it. Generally if you heavily use your computer it is a good idea to disable Windows maintenance altogether and when going through the standard defrag/optimize gui the option to remove the scheduled run should work.

Seeing how this is a gaming forum and most people here are familiar with recording, he can record his performance monitor and see if something is hogging resources to cause a freeze.

Hardware and drivers might want to check too.

A resource hog shouldn’t be able to lock up the system, though. Things should deteriorate before that point, visuals will stop showing up, etc. If that’s the theory, open up Task Manager, go to Details view, turn on the GDI Objects and Handles columns, and keep a loose watch on those. That’d geeeeenerally be a sign of something leaking. But leaks shouldn’t align with a freeze at all in my experience.

A found a windows.old file on my drive and tried to delete it. I couldn’t so I just downloaded Unlocker and tried to use that to delete it. It was slow so I just let it run when I went to sleep. Woke up to the frozen screen again. If this keeps happening I’m returning this mofo. I aint trying to own something brand new that keeps fuckin’ up on me almost right after getting it.

I did some more lookin’ last night and people that have similar issues say to leave a song running in media player and it wont freeze. That’s strange. Another guy with the same issue said he fixed it by removing a Steam game that was causing it to freeze like mine is. I dunno.

Deleting windows.old can be really bad due to hard links and other virtualized files. Use the Disk Cleanup wizard for that. If you tried forcing deletion, weird/bad things could happen.

Yeah, well, didn’t work anyhow since the damn thing froze. I just changed the permissions and deleted it. /shrug. Hope I didn’t fuck shit up. I’ll find out soon enough I guess.

Some of this stuff you guys say to do like “Use the Disk Cleanup Wizard” I dunno how to do. I mean, I know, just google that shit. I’m gonna run some scans/tests/whatevers and see if I can find any errors or such. I doubt I will but I’m kinda hoping I do so I may be able to fix it.

Ive read that maybe I should update my BIOS. Could that possibly be an issue? I figured since the damn thing is new that shit would be up to date, but perhaps that’s not the case. I should probably hit up the PC thread and use more google-fu.

Just type “disk cleanup” into Cortana or Start menu search and you should see it as the top option. Changing permissions to delete something is usually a horrible plan: permissions are the way they are usually for a good reason.

BIOS concerns sound reasonable: don’t know if your device has actual BIOS-related problems, but if there are updates available they’re usually for a really really good reason.

I agree with Preppy, using Changing permissions or change ownership to delete a file is the extreme way to go and often a bad idea.
I only do it when I am dead-set certain I know what I am doing. And if its a Systems file I back it up first.

Getting a new windows 10 laptop tomorrow. Gonna delete the shit out of it and install mint.

Make sure you read your warranty info
Some places consider replacing the Windows OS with Linux voiding the warranty.

Example: Most Best Buy locations will not service a Linux computer. Yeah each district could have a Linux expert, but its one guy for like 20 some stores.
The tech there rather just void your warranty or null your service agreement than to actually help you out.
I found this out from a friend who was a manager of the Geek Squad service Dept.

I wouldn’t take my computer to best buy for service regardless lol.

True, with minor exceptions they are morons. I fixed pc problems that squeak squad said was unfixable.

I service my own pcs

I wont take my PC anywhere to have it serviced. I’ll read on the internets, ask questions here and at other places and try to service/fix it myself. This doesn’t always work out. But I enjoy it and I learn stuff.

My other, new, laptop froze up twice since I last posted. I disabled other shit (yes I looked up the stuff before disabling it to make sure it was safe) and removed some stuff. I also updated my BIOS. I’ll leave it running when I go to sleep and see if its froze when I wake up.

As for the windows.old folder. Ive read that it is ok (and in a lot of cases good) to get rid of it. It carries over drivers and such that will try to install or will install that will cause conflicts with other drivers and programs installed. /shrug

The commentary from random people that you are likely to find online is often painfully misguided. For example, the comments you reference as regards windows.old are breathtakingly dumb to the point where you might never want to use that site again.
