Don’t get me wrong, the game plays very well. The roster is what I have trouble with. I feel if they put different characters from different games together, put the best foot forward. CvS2? Andy should have been in it. Robert also, since plot wise, he and Ken funded the tournament. Kick Todo out, put Kasumi in. Ralph or Clark, take your pick. Leona. Chris. Shingo. Stop putting Morrigan in everything…
Basically, these last 4-5 dream match games, I am tired of looking at the roster and thinking “eh”.

Well don’t get in a bunch, but it’s defending the game based on the tools used to create it instead of on its merit as a game and its presentation that makes you all sound that way:
To simplify, the engine is what loops and parses graphics against input. So it loads particular sprite tables+effects and adjusts the display according to what the player’s input is. If one had access to the sprite table, they could just fill it with shit stickmen and it would parse the same data out. It’s not so much the engine as the artists.
The GG engine is impressive in that it is higher resolution than what came before it (applauding when someone gets off their ass and uses a system already out-of-date, past the life of their industry is ludicrous already) and has been able to handle the higher quality art its coupled with without much of a hitch. However, just because this game uses the same hardware/software doesn’t mean it was programmed as well, or drawn to as high a quality. As for the comparisons of Guilty Gear’s animation rate to KOF and relatives’, the amount of frames can be overlooked if they are properly animated:
Example, a punch from start to connection:
0---------10---------20---------30---------40---------50
Now, with 0 being arm ready, and 50 being arm extended, if we envision a progression of animation of the arm moving from the side of the body to a fully extended position, we know that like a movie works, not every frame is necessary to be shown, so long as the broadstrokes are hit in a fairly fluid fashion.
Here is how a KOF game might do it:
0---------10------20---------------------------45------
Whereas here is how a GG game might do it:
--------------------20-------------------40---------50
We see that both end up with the same effect, however depending on the quality of the animation drawn, and the lining of collision mapped to which particular frames, we will end up with two different things. The GG example favors a swinging collision, whereas the KOF stumbles with the short detail in windup from ready to halfway, and then falters at the connecting collision.
For example, when Mortal Kombat was digitized, they filmed with flat keyframes on every frame (hard to do this nowadays with the cheap cameras used, now that digital CCDs are the dominant) and then went through and looped, cutting down to the frames necessary for the action. This is easy to do when you can dump your content in a bin and sift, but for things that need to be drawn, the quality of the animators is what will affect not only visual presentation, but the entire “feel” of the game.
So to say that the game is legitimate solely because it was made with the same tools used to make GG is just wrong; AVIDs edited a bunch of good movies, but they also were used on House of The Dead. That doesn’t mean House of The Dead was a good movie. There’s a lot of engines that are used in good games that are then licensed, or just reused on shitty games later on. Not every product is an inspired composition or anything; when you turn out a crappy warm-over every year or so without revisions to keep up with the times, you only succeed in making your products repeat as opposed to innovate. If you like the game as a game then say it, if you think its got angles that others haven’t seen then go with that, but if the plumber comes with a brand new snake, you pay him $100, and the next day your toilet backs the fuck up still, NOT A GOOD PLUMBER.
And then there’s the typical Gerald misinformation and confusion action that doesn’t help anybody.
Long story short, cheesemaster is right. Except about that “it plays ok,” because all KOF games are low-rent pieces of crap, Garou was the only non-weapon 2d game made by SNK that was worth a shit, and NGBC is a step-off from KOF and nothing like Garou. It’s too bad that the creators of garou had to kill themselves for dishonoring the gods by giving mortals a high-quality non-weapon 2d SNK fighter, or I’d hold some sort of hope that there would ever be another legitimate game from them.
I’ll take it for granted you know what your talking about…I can grasp some of it…however, its still boils down to “taste”.
Some people prefer Capcom, some SNK, some Sammy…some can stomach all. I try to have an open mind.
I don’t like SF Alpha II…but is it garbage? Hell no. I’m intelligent enough to know it is a well made fighting game…I just don’t like it.
You hate SNK games with the exception of Garou in which, by your definition makes you a “fanboy” for that particular game…you sorta rave about it…Soul Calibur as well. You will not play anything else…well maybe MK. That makes your library extremely limited, however…I don’t knock your taste, its just what you prefer. I like a little bit of everything, mostly SNK…for obvious reasons.
Take Last Blade for instance…a well made game and graphically impressive, even at todays standards. Third Strike and Guilty Gear fall into that category as well…but you don’t play em’. Why? I assume its just not your thing…but that doesn’t make the game “garbage” because it doesn’t meet your criteria for a good fighting game.
I guess my point is graphics and high rez isn’t everything…but I’m not hypocrite either. Would I like to see a high rez SNKP fighter? * Hell yes.* However, as long as SNKP, Capcom or whoever keeps putting out games with tight gameplay, I’m not gonna complain about the graphics too much, as long as they are credible. I’m not gonna dismiss a game simply because its not “2006 high rez, well drawn, bit mapped backrounds and sprites”.
Thats just ill.
I don’t know yet. My phone is currently out of order…you call my house, the phone rings on your end, but I can’t hear anything here…just dead air…SBC told me they’d fix it by Saturday.
Wow, you know, just after watching King Kong, it makes you realize even more how much Star Wars sucks and how George Lucas is a shitty story writer and can’t do “special effects” worth shit!
Obi-Wan: "Don’t do it, Anikin! I have the high ground!"
Anikin: "Uleulelelelueuleuleueleleuleluuulelelueluelueeueluelue!!"
George Lucas: “Wee-OH WEE OH WEE OH WEE OH WEE OH!”
Michael Moore: “Where’s my burrito!? Where’s my burrito!?”
I agree with the robot. Aside from the cliched morale about family sticking together, it was great. Now, if we could get something along those lines, but rated “R”, I"ll be happy.
I beat you…twice…in a row…without taging out so I didn’t get to refresh my character!:badboy:
Incredibles was a great movie. I agree I saw it at the show when it came out. Dreamworks/Pixar, which ever one made it always make good movies like Toy Story. I heard Chronicles of Narnia was good too.
Heres a cover art for my comic novel which based off of the school. If anyone interested in buying one let me know. I will be done by the end of the month i have to edit it on paint shop 9.
You can call my house, caller ID will say you called, but phone does not ring. Nor can I hear anything when I pick it up, however DSL (uses phone line) still works.
