Umm Lycan…there’s some misunderstanding, so I’ll set it straight, because we were both mistaken on a few points.
I forgot in part 1 (see previous posts), it can be as few as 31 matches, if the person from the winners bracket sweeps entirely in the two out of 3 match set:
15 matches Winners Bracket
14 matches Losers Bracket
2-6 matches Finals
Worse case scenario, each match in the finals takes it to the final match and the loser defeats the winner in the first 2/3 set, so the actual match range is 31-35 matches of CvS2 under Keshawn’s method.
Make everything 2 out of 3 with 1 x Elimination, and that makes a minimal of 30 matches played, if and only if everyone gets swept. I have no idea where you’re getting 32 from, which is impossible under a 16 man single elimination bracket.
If everything goes to 3 matches, then multiply total match sets by faceoff stems within the bracket:
3 x 15 = 45 <<< 30-45 matches, 2/3 Single Elimination
If the finals are under different criteria (ie. 3 out of 5), then you take the minimal standard and add the variable to total possible matches.
2 x 14 = 28
Finals: 3-5 matches
3 x 14 = 42
So the range adding a 3/5 Finals is actually 31-47. Whew…!
And between Lycan and TKK, there is some misunderstanding, as the format was different than what was originally posted for MWC initially. CvS2 rules at MWC was 2 out of 3 for qualifying rounds, but single match, double elimination re-entry this year; pretty much what Lycan said. TKK speaks of the format back in 2002, ie. the past.
