Talked to Dan and MikeTaz today. Couldn’t make out Mike too well because he was too sleepy ( or hungover
), but they both confirmed that Wizzards was closing down. Dan was pretty pissed about it to say the least.
The reason why there are prices on most but not all cabinets is because the owners have different accounts (theatres, etc); Wizzards being one of them. Some of the most rare, popular games are being transferred to those accounts. The less popular games, or those that the owners have duplicates of, are being sold.
Suffice it to say, lack of new material, added with severe customer downtime, console, and other factors pushed Wizzards into many weeks towards making the decision; some weeks better than others. But lately, it’s hurting to the point where expenditures aren’t meeting profit as a standard. So last week, the decision was made to close Wizzards Arcade, and the decision stays final; after 34 years of business. Arcades this day and age is more of a crutch to add on to a business rather than survive on it’s own. As Ali Vegas said and Dan confirmed, this back and forth ordeal has been going on for many months now. MikeTaz also said that there’s a 90% chance that Putt Putt Golf and Games, aka The Butterfly (14 Mile and Van Dyke) may close shop. Not just the arcade, but the WHOLE structure.
Rather than convert the building of Wizzards into another level of business, they will shut down, and sell the property. Everyone from there will pretty much go their separate ways. However…
In light of this, Dan mentioned that there will be a final Wizzards Tournament this Saturday around 5ish for the following 3 games.
Marvel v Capcom 2
Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
Capcom v SNK 2
In light of holding the largest tournament in the arcade’s 34 year history, I have been invited to help organize the SF3 and CvS2 tournaments. I accepted the task, and will be my possible 2nd from last tournament that I will sponsor for the forseeable future…especially when/if I leave town in 2005, pending.
The actual last day is in question, but the way it’s looking, I give it about 2-8 weeks. A post will be made to promote the final tournament of Wizzards Arcade tonight.
