How were these games so consistently good. Gameplay was hands down the best out of the three, but I definitely see what Nick was saying about it being straightforward. I don’t think it’s a lesser game for it, just different than SOL. As an environment I liked the jungle way more than backtracking 24/7 between struts on the Big Shell. Ok, obviously that’s an exaggeration…but it was a refreshing sense of pacing in comparison to the pacing that SOL had. I didn’t feel nearly as stuck or lost in this game as I did in a lot of the points within the first two games. But a lot of that also probably has to do with me being really used to the controls now at this point. I also agree with Nick that the ending was lesser in comparison to SOL, but it was still a fantastic conclusion.
Also can we talk about how CRAZY AWESOME The Sorrow’s boss fight was? Probably one of my favorite “fights” in this franchise so far. Shit was creepy as absolute hell. Everyone thinking you’ve died on the codec was an amazingly awesome touch to the encounter. And it took me so fucking long to weave through hundreds of ghosts since I apparently killed a lot during this playthrough…
These games are an adventure. I’ve fallen in love with them. And now I finally get to experience the explosive climax of the entire story.
Guns of The Patriots, bring it all together for me.
MGS4 spoilers [details=Spoiler]It doesn’t really bring anything together. It just answers a bunch of shit that never needed answers and ruined some characters.[/details]
TBH I was one of those guys who demanded closure for MGS…lol. Some of the answers we got were obviously weird and some people thought the certain characters were damaged in the process. Since the entire MG storyline has complexity, I’m sure Kojima had to pull things out of thin air. Looking back as crazy as some of the conclusions were I can accept MGS4 as the ending of the series for Solid Snake.
MGS3 was sooo good though and I feel like the pinnacle in the gameplay department. I use to hate MGS2 but its message has grown on me after watching some of those previously posted retrospectives. At least to me it wasn’t as easy to understand at first but I guess that is were its beauty lies. The only MG game I haven’t played is the arcade mgo in Japan, nes mg1/snakes revenge,mgs1 vr missions and the card game on psp. I heard the card game was actually good but I never bothered to try it.
I’ve only played 2, 3, peacewalker, MGR, and watched a playthrough of MGS. Motherfucker EVEN I KNEW who Sunny was. Play for a few hours, save, then blaze a bowl.
It’s a lot more shocking of a revelation than just thinking she’s a random child Otacon keeps on the Nomad to serve him bad eggs. Which is all I’ve thought she was since 2008, 4 having been the first MGS game I ever even touched.
