Metal Gear Rising thread. Releasing in Early 2013 for PS3 & 360

Each game of the Metal Gear series has a different set of rules and controls…

Not only this, but they have taken risk throughout the franchise, like the total removal of the main protagonist from most of the game(MGS2)… and now handing the Metal Gear Rising game to Platinum…

I never know what to expect when I first crack open a Metal Gear Solid game…

And you never fight wars with Snake, you generally prevent them, you do things from behind the scenes in general “This is a sneaking mission”… being placed in a mission during an era where there is war =/= fighting a war…

I mean seriously if “Tactical Espionage Action” means war game to you, idk what to say to you…

For the people that were seriously trying to tie this game into the series continuity, you might as well stop trying. I remember hearing Kojima say that this game takes place outside of the series continuity, so this game is basically a noncanon sequel

While I don’t want to get too off topic here, I think it’s safe to say that both JP and US/Western Developers are guilty of playing safe and recycling formulas. That doesn’t mean they fail to produce good games, however. Looking at Western games, it’s safe to say the following are usually present…

Shooters/FPS = mostly set in modern wars, main character is a big burly dude that is invincible
Action games = typically sandbox, main character is… see above
Sports games = same game, updated roster (DAT MADDEN)
RPGs = sandboxish RPG; Western RPGs have fallen prey to recycling the same formula much like JP RPGs are known for

That said, I feel that Platinum Games seems to be one of the only developers these days that are continually trying to push the envelope with their games. Playing safe doesn’t really seem to be an option for them… and I greatly commend them for that. I expect nothing but greatness from MGR.

Edit: just read that IGN article. That guy needs to get fired.

As a MGS fan I’m disappointed, the canon is goofy but I really wanted to play out Raiden’s story bridging the gap between 2 and 4. However as a fan of Bayonetta and someone willing to do awful things to humanity if it meant getting a sequel to it I couldn’t be more hyped.

Taking a long-running franchise in a completely different direction can definitely payoff (RE -> RE4), but change this drastic is always scary. Perhaps this won’t be the Metal Gear that we’re all used to, but it could be a great game nonetheless. We won’t know until we see a finished product.

Make no mistake, this WILL be a great game since it’s Platinum, it just isn’t MGS. It’s** MGR**.

They hate On MGR yet welcome NJ for the new DMC.

IGN lol

Kojima: Metal Gear Rising to be first playable at E3 2012

Kamiya isn’t director, director for this is the lead programmer for Bayo. So, Kamiya’s been working on his secret project since just before the release of Bayonetta 1.

Ya know whats funny?

When MGS2 was released, a ton of the fans were so mad that they didnt get to be Snake as the main protaganist. Then MGS4 came out and like, everyone wanted to be the bad ass new Raiden. Now a new game comes out where hes the hero and bam, MGS2 all over again.

Personally I actually prefer Raiden (the old one if I had to choose) but we all know our legendary soldier of fortune is gonna be in the game someway or another, whether it be a full on apperance by Solid or Big Boss somehow or just a small cameo or reference.

MGS4 Raiden is terrible.
MGS2 Raiden was amazing.

Someone make a flowchart

>release good game

>make sequel

>does it use the same formula? “WAAAH WAAAH PEOPLE NEVER TAKE RISKS OR TRY ANYTHING NEW!”

>Did they take a risk and try departing from the original? “WAAAH WAAH IT’S NOT LIKE THE ORIGINAL!”

Spent more time listening to Raiden’s shitty girlfriend in 2 than you did playing as Snake.

Think about that one.

I didn’t. Savings for pussies!

raiden was a great protagonist in 2. plus, watching snake beast the entire big shell on his own from afar built his mystique even further. (plus, the massive role reversal will go down as an all-time WTF moment in gaming and it was completely unspoiled iirc…how does that even happen in modern times!)

It definitely was in my case. I remember very well playing through MGS2, after maybe 30 minutes of playing as Raiden, then just started flipping through my Brady Guide or whatever it was thinking “wtf man! when do I get to use Snake again??” and my heart sank seeing more and more of Raiden as I got towards the end of the guide

All that said I loved MGS2 and Raiden, although MGS4 Raiden >>> MGS2 Raiden.

considering the gameplay was exactly the same except for the way raiden rolled, i didnt see the big deal in playing as raiden as opposed to snake. plus the original artwork for raiden is awesome

i do, alot

Someone had to say it

well it was like if the dark knight was 5 minutes of batman vs. joker, then batman gets thrown off a building, then we get the title card and suddenly the entire movie skips years ahead to Jean-Paul Valley already as azrael preparing to take down a falcone weapon ring – a bust which takes up the remainder of the film after a year plus of MASSIVE marketing hype about bale’s batman vs. heath ledger’s joker.
