After reading the good cents from the FunkDoc, Keits, and last but never least the Darkman Geese(the REAL boss that’d make Young Geese look jealous-make him dance the Soulja Boy theme and crank his ass w/ hotter Reppu Kens, sir!), here are my thoughts.
I always consider playing characters regardless of tier. Old school mentality will still be with me regardless of who says what, but in terms of having bosses used in tournies is like having noobs playing w/ ST Akuma and seeing them get wasted for cheap thrills. At least in this example, when people beat them nobody complains because obviously he/she’s a noob. Were it be middle tier characters such as Fei/Chun/Dictator/etc. and it’s a battle to the finish, then it’d be and obvious look and a more interesting outcome.
Let’s put that same comparison to none other than the SNK side and with a game I always loved to play: World Heroes Perfect. SURE, Kidd is top tier, but doesn’t me he owns up everyone for free. He may have some combos that are great, but not dominant. Damaging to the rest of the chacters? Yes. Damaging so Geese Jack can knock me down for dizzies so I can rematch him again? Why not? But, that doesn’t mean he’s the Ken of the game. Although he can still be played like a mid and challenge every other char, it’s still possible for any char to fight anyone else. Hence, the game is balanced for just about anything to say the least.
New school mentality, on most occasions, don’t see it that way. It’s always seen as
the"best-character-to-play-and-nothing-else-regardless-of-what-the-world-thinks" type of attitude which sadly doesn’t promote anything but pure fuckin BOREDOM. Chun/Yun/Ken/ matches are the worst to see in 3S since it’s nothing out of the ordinary. Not me tho since I play with Team Kobra Kai (Necro/Yang/Alex) in N.Y. But, simply put I’d rather see Mid tier battles than high/boss tier anyday of the week.
Another thing I find interesting is the popularity of the games. Sure, in NY we have stores that sell us imports, people who like them, and so forth. But, we don’t have a large SNK community- possibly at most 15-20 people who adore them. If we had more working machines and the potent to promote SNK games back and forth we’d do it. However, not many people are interested in them or don’t even know they’re in Chinatown Fair to begin with. Once they see any Capcom game they’re gonna be fighting it like Rod and Todd over Pixie Sticks on a hot scorching Summer night and have Bart as a guest referee.
It’s true. We could have games like MOTW,SamShoTenka,KOFXI,WH:P, DD,BR, etc. and do an event where we can promote them again so people can learn them as much as people want to learn nothing but Capcom games. All we need to do is to keep playing on and show whoever’s interested just exactly how good these games are- just like how we did in NEC last year in Philly.
Best time of my life: Playing DG in World Heroes Perfect for both the Semis and Loser’s Finals just to make top 3. I was even surprised of my performance since it was my second time playing that game and was interested in it like crazy. (REMATCH COMING SOON!!)
All in all, we just have to step up and make sure that we can contribute something this upcoming Spring till Evo East. If a good portion of people head to Hotlanta this March I look forward for it. If I’m not able to make it then, I can wait until Evo East to show what’s good in a couple of games.
But as agreed w/ the Funk Dr. Josh, get off the Pussy shit and do three simple things:
1- off with the nob slobbing over Japan’s elite over and over again since we can be just as good as them, if not better within time.
2- off with only Top Tier/Boss chars again and again and try someone one new. That’s how you learn any game in perspective.
3- Practice, Practice, Practice. Fundamentally speaking, perfect that part and it comes second nature to learn any game in the book.
I’m out and trying to learn adavanced combos with Erick/Kidd/Ryoko/Hogan. PM/IM , do w/e you feel to keep in contact.
And, see you all in March and MAY!
